The part that irritates me is that I'll be grinding for an outfit that can only be worn at the place of the grind. Risa is a ghost town otherwise. The only real incentive is to get in the spirit of the event by grinding for an outfit to wear while grinding for a hoverboard... which also only works on Risa, yes?

Odds are the best thing they would do about that issue is making mid seasonal limited time missions maybe like a non combat limited time que mission/possible jet pack race that uses risa in it so that they can be used outside it but still use the map in some fashion. Probally best way to implement this is some made up mission parameters under guise of a winter in the summer and summer in the winter kind of event lol.

Right now, for a VERY SMALL amount of zen, you can buy a Mirror U and TOS uniforms. You can mix and match, essentially using the sports bra and miniskirt, and there you have it...."swimwear" on the Fedside...the ability to be a skimpy woman in ESD to troll all the, abeit few, puritanical players out there.

But does EVERYBODY do it? Do MAJORITY do it? Or is it even noticable? I don't think so.

Its the same deal in KDF. Anybody can roll a skimpy Orion for free in this game. You don't need to buy anything from the C-store or win in a lock box. Just do the pre-requisite Fed mission, and then you can have all the skimpy Orions that you can create. But how come the population of the KDF isn't that big, and how come there are still players that roll traditional Klingons, Nausicaans, and so on?

At the end of the day, the restrictions for the Risa swimwear is a bad decision. It doesn't make sense in terms of business or normal MMO industry practice. And at the end of the day, the only people pushing it are the handful of puritanical players who, for whatever reason, feel that they have this right to tell players how to play the game!

I personally won't be wearing the swimwear on my Feds and Rommie 100% of the time. Just the past few days, I spend hours on the tailor adding kit parts to enhance my Federation and Romulan captains. So even I would want to wear my uniforms, but I also want, on occassion and just for fun, run STFs or Battlezones on my Risian Board Shorts with my guildies. You know...solely FOR FUN!

    What's the harm in that?
    I totally agree.

You can find/contact me in game as @PatricianVetinari. Playing STO since Feb 2010.

With regards to swimwear outside of Risa, I think what people are forgetting is this is quite possibly a restriction CBS put in to allowing swimwear into the game at all.

Granted the info is about 2 years old, but that is my understanding. CBS has said (via the Devs) that swimwear would HAVE to be restricted to Risa. So even if Cryptic wanted to have it available where ever, That is not their call to make.

That being said, the male swimwear is ugly and I probably wouldn't even wear it ON Risa, let alone anywhere else.

When TSW released the "Borat Mankini" on their cash shop, only to yank it from the game a few days later (including forcing buyers to contact customer service for refunds), it was speculated that the owners of the Borat IP threatened Funcom. While there were whiners, most sane people generally accepted that theory.

However, it was later revealed by the Creative Directoir, Joel Bylos, that the reason for the yanking is internal office politics, wherein the upper management do not want such outfit in the game. So yeah....gender bias within the powers to be played a huge role here.

I doubt CBS has anything to do with it, and given even the limited and ugliness of the male swimwear options, and the fact that ultimately, it is the ability of male characters to be skimpy outside Risa that stands to loose the most....speaks for itself.

I live in Southern California. People go to the malls here in swimwear all the time. Granted, they do usually add a t-shirt/tank top, but I've seen shorts, flip-flops, bikini tops, etc. in shops all the time, weather permitting.

    >shrug<

I do not think swimwear should always be worn on ESD or Starfleet Academy, but I don't have a problem if others do: It won't bother my sense of immersion. We've seen in canon various races that had "uniforms" (as in everyone wore the same thing) that were similar to/just as revealing as swimwear. I can easily explain away such clothing as cultural variance of visitors to the Starbase.

Or if I'm RPing a scene from Enterprise where I've just left the decon blue room, I could be wearing my trunks until I get to the tailor to grab my clothes.

Or maybe as a lark I just want to run an STF with some friends while we all wear bikinis and bunny slippers (I pray for bunny slippers - ok, just kidding about the slippers ;)).

    Meh.

That's very true , since there is ( at least a kind of ) peace now , the whole maurauding / diplomatic immunity thing is kind of pointless

The "New Accord" only goes into effect after your character gets through the Featured Mission "Surface Tension". Not everyone is at the same point in the story. Newer players will still be playing in 2409 and the old vets that have played every mission will be in 2410. This is why it's usually a bad idea to have stories and missions attached to dates in MMOs where not everyone is playing the same content at the same time.

EDIT: Also going by the stardates in our Captain's Logs it's 2414. It was synced to "2409" when the game was in alpha/beta in 2009.

I'm assuming you mean that only the FE is 2410 since characters that have finished surface tension are still killing federation ships in pi canis sorties, kahless expanse, fleet alerts, etc. As well as doff marauding so it seems like all content except the new FE occurs in 2409 :) Although yeah it should be 2414 but based on long it takes to build up content they'd never get enough done in a year to be a full game year imo.

From what the tailor on Risa currently says , the swimsuits are indeed locked to Risa , but again we'll have to wait for the Dev blog about the ship to see if you can use them there.
I know it's not to everyone's taste , but personally I like the bathing suits being only available to wear at an actual beach , adds more incentive to go to Risa in the first place.

    Now here's the question:

Is it only these brand new outfits that are locked to Risa? Or is it any outfits that were designed with last year's parts as well?

New players (characters) are introduced to the story at 2409. They don't get updated to 2410 until the latest FE. Which means all the story missions prior to that take place within a single year. It's a bit overloaded IMO. You've got:

    - Borg invasion of Vega colony
    - uncover Undine posing as Vulcan Ambassador
    - uncovering and destroying KDF/Undine listening posts in FED space
    - uncovering a plot to kidnap the Kuvagh'maghlaghlaghl
    - stopping a Devidian plot to rewrite history
    - uncovering a new KDF eugenics program
    - stopping klingons from unleashing another Doomsday Machine planet killer
    - stopping klingons from using time travel to prematurely advance their technology

    - uncovering and destroying a Tal'Shiar base on Nimbus III, and revealing the Elaachi

    - uncover Undine posing as a Starfleet Admiral
    - uncovering the truth behind the Tal'Shiar's involvement behind the destruction of Romulus.
    - liberating the Remans
    - exposing Tal'Shiar experiments with Borg tech
    - exposing Tal'Shiar use of Iconian tech.

    - getting "recruited" into Section 31
    - retaking DS9 from Undine
    - fighting off new Cardassian/True Way movement
    - recover Sacred Orb from Mirror Universe
    - stopping a rogue Founder changeling
    - defending against a delayed Dominion invasion fleet

    - join Omega Force
    - uncover Borg experiments with Undine
    - venture into fluidic space to remove Borg

    - attmept to ally with Defera
    - defend Defera against Breen
    - uncover Preserver artifacts/stasis pods in Defera space and protect them from Breen

    - discover Solanae Dyson Sphere
    - fight to keep Voth from using Omega particles
    - uncover Iconian involvement in Dyson Sphere(s)
    - fight for Jenolan Dyson Sphere

...And that's just the main story episode arcs. Doesn't include all the other things that may be happening between episodes in-gameplay or not, like regular patrols, ship refits/transfers, shore leaves, training, etc.

Ok, if you manage to lobby for a T5 NX Class with full ENT interiors including the blue decon room, you'll gain my support on this swimwear issue. :)

Not being sarcastic at all, as a big ENT fan I'd trade my stance on this for a T5 NX. :D

Looks like the dev team is making more pointless junk. I see hover surf boards and tiki bars.

I didn't realize we needed BIGGER beaches and hotels.

So when are the devs actually going to make worthwhile contributions to the game...like advancing the Iconia plot more...putting out more FEs...things like that?
