STO started in around 2009. The STO game year was 2409.
It's now 2014, and they only decide to move the year ahead by 1? Shouldn't it be 2414 at least?

The Energy Wave comes back in 2410; thus the game is not going to advance past that as it is an important canon event to eventually get an adventure into the game about.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
The game started in 2009. It is 2014. But time in the fictional world of a video game may not move in a linear sense. So no, there's no real compelling reason to make it 2414.
Actually it should probably be at least 2420. Even 25th century Starfleet cannot repair those extensive damages to ESD in less than a year. Unless Q was helping. :P
Btw the construction time of the Enterprise D and E was about 5 years.

What energy wave now...? The one that was in Generations?
There's a flaw with that logic. The attack happened IN 2410. We don't know how long it took to rebuild.
Also the Enterprise E was built late 24th century. Advances were made since then.
Think about it: Launched in 2372. 38 years from the current date of 2410.
Finally, its fiction.
Yes you're right but looking at construction times of aircraft carriers shows what I mean. In 1968 it took 7 years to build the first Nimitz class carrier and still 6 years in 2003 to build the newest one. Construction gets more and more efficient over time but with the new advances in technology construction also becomes more and more complex. At least in our time those two effects seem to cancel each other.
That being said I know it's just fiction. For all we now the destruction of ESD could have opened a rift in our space-time continuum and sucked us all into another timeline
It should be a lot later than 2414 since there is no way for it to take 1 year to 5 years to go from a Cadet to Vice Admiral.
Why not? According to J.J. Abrams you can go from being a Cadet to being a Captain (skipping multiple ranks) on a state of the art starship with a crew of hundreds in being responsible for their lives in your early 20s within about a week. Yeah, and absolutely no one would have any qualms regarding that. I don't see why going from Cadet to Captain to Vice Admiral within 5 years would be any more difficult.
Picard made Captain in less then 6 years - was stabbed in the heart after graduation in 2327 and made Captain of the Stargazer in 2333.
The Admiral Ranks are really nothing more then a gaming trope to give more player bonuses from advancement. For all intents and purposes the characters really never advance past Captain - as they do everything Captains normally do in Starfleet and nothing Admirals do.
The fact that the game only advances one year is a gaming trope as well - because it leaves space open for the Energy Ribbon/Wave to be added to the game and because the Stardate is completely irrelevant to everything you do in the game, anyway - nothing you do in the game is time dependent. You never need to be at X planet by Y time or you fail.

For the most part, the year stated in game means nothing; a player can make it any year in the 25th century he/she wants. Just like it doesn't maker that there are 100s or 1,000's of Vice Admirals running round as ship's captains. the player can RP or fictionalize their toons as they wish.

^This. it's why I only wear a commander rank on my uniform, the bare minimum for a command chair (At least if you count all of Riker's ship command turndowns xD)

I'm stuck with Commodore, the highest rank in command of a ship.
Now all I need is the option for Commadore to be a title... Cryptic!
Norway and Yeager dammit... I still want my Typhoon and Jupiter though. JJ Trek The Kelvin Timeline is just Trek and it's fully canon... get over it. But I still prefer TAR.

STO exists in a state where events unfold at a different pace than our reality.
It's a lot like the "MASH" TV show which lasted longer than the Korean War.
"Hogan's Heroes" were also imprisoned longer in a German PoW camp than any Americans ever were.;)
Naa my feds hit captain, most I'll acknowledge. For the KDF side, achievement through battle will earn you general's stars so one of my KDF officers is a general paid for with the Iron price. Though my Drow though they call him general, he's a mercenary.
Romulan side, one is Tal Shiar, other well I consider him a Commander.

Since I should be in command of the Enterprise, I'll just have to settle for Vice Admiral
Normal time does not dictate game time.

Hope Tuesday gets here before then.

Now, you'll have to excuse me, Captain. I have an appointment with eternity, and I don't want to be late.
