I'd agree that the Kelvan Empire would be a good choice. Indeed I think it would have made a better choice then the Iconians in my opinion.
Another interesting choice would be the Krenim. Remember that at the end of Year of Hell, Annorax was working on the equations for the Incursion Weapon. What if he rebuilt it? Krenim would be rather interesting to fight and if it ever got stale?
Temporal Incursion Beam fires, Causality changes, there is a new timeline and they can change things however the hell they want. It's the writer's best tool...
I think we will have lots of content before the Iconian battles. We still have vast amounts of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants we still have not seen. Let alone the Gamma and Delta quadrants to explore yet. Who knows how many races we have not scene yet.
Lets see we still have to deal with the Undine, Elachi and god knows who else before we even get to the Iconians and considering their little display on Qo'nos, we're gonna need bigger guns.
We got a lot to do first before wondering "who's next".

I'm really loving how more and more story driven this game is becoming, the last Featured Episodes was fantastic. We finally got to see an Iconians, Starfleet and the KDF finally do a cease fire, so I feel that a final epic battle against the Iconians will be coming in the next 2 or 3 seasons.
After the Iconian storyline is done and we defeat them, who becomes STO's main antagonist afterwards?
I vote Ferengi...
We still have the True Way insurgency to deal with, and of course the Borg are always a threat.
Actually... after pondering things... I think the Kelvans are an example of a race that fought the Iconians and LOST. O_O' Think about that vague threat the Iconian makes and the reason the Kelvans were exploring outside their galaxy.... I think the Iconians irradiated the Andromeda galaxy to kill the Kelvans.
I have a feeling it will drag out for a bit before we deal with them completely. We still have the other races in all Quadrants. So the sky is the limit.

He abandoned his work on the time dreadnought when he got his wife back.
Which proves that all a villain really wants is not money, power or respect. Their true objective is to get laid.
If we could figure out how Iconian sex works, we could end this war a lot sooner.

Seen is more like it. I was a bit disappointed that the Ferengi and Cardassians (both of which have governments that are friendly to the Federation) did not send ships to help defend Earth yet our "enemy" did.
The Cardassians are only allowed a small force to maintain the Cardassia system.
Part of the agreement they signed with the Federation is that the Fed will act as their shield from outside threats but they cannot amass a fleet again, so, no ships to send really.
The Ferengi, well... how many courageous battle ready Ferengi do you know?
the federation.
only thing stopping it coming apart at the seams are the external threats. so with those gone, it'l cannibalise itself.
This is extremely logical(and mirrors America's current predicament) My only question then is what happens to my Joined Trill after the Federtaion desolves? Do I get a choice, or would the Trill just up and join the Dominion? :P
I don't see why. Having an evolving universe mean it evolves. When in TNG they finished dealing with the weird parasite stuff, the show continued, and we had the Borgs. When the Khazon were dealt with in voyager, we had something else.
There is nothing evolving in having a "oh noes Iconians are behind this (insert FE plot here) !" again and again. The world around may evolve, albeit slowly, but the main plot, not at all. We are pretty much at the same place we were 4 years ago. Iconians are still the hidden threat, and the Undines are still trying to mess with us because they are just too dumb to see they are manipulated, even when they have infiltrators in our ranks clearly seeing evidence of the manipulation.
Why can't we deal with the Iconians, and have something else ?
I'm sorry, but right now, the Iconians are not even scary. And they are not really a threat, they should have attacked when we were fighting each others, unknowing of their existence.
So yeah, they are lurking in the shadows, but they don't seems to want to come.
In the end, they are more funny than anything else.
What would you think if I told you ...
the Iconians are a scapegoat?
The Iconian we saw warned us not to attract their attention again. So they haven't been paying attention to us all this while? So who was Hakeev in league with?
I want to see something done with Human Augments. And while I'm dreaming, a ground combat overhaul. If this game played like a cover shooter or borderlands they could have some more of my money... maybe all of it.
^After reading up on them, I could definitely see the Kelvans being a good species to follow the Iconian defeat. They sound just as deadly and may be smarter than the Iconians, they probably have figured out a way to get to the Milky Way faster and if so they could be a real threat.
The Iconians have probably established their base of operations in the Kelvan home galaxy (hints in SoI).

Dun dun DUN!
Well, as a servitor race, the Tal'Shiar likely have considerable leeway to do whatever suits their interests. It's possible that Hakeev executed the plan without consulting them.

Given the buildup to get to this point and the ground work laid down.
Iconians are going to be a long term threat. Lasting several more seasons at least 3 if not 4 full seasons of gameplay in combating this threat. We're not even in head on confrontations yet. Then there's the trouble of actually FINDING them.
There is no 'afterwards' for a very long time if these guys are smart.
Honestly, the Iconian War is going to last much longer. Probably another nine seasons.
But afterward? I hope we just have some nice, peaceful content. I love blowing stuff up, but it's always nice to have a breather afterward. Basically, have a post-war "state" of the game, where we deal with little problems, and explore.
And yes the Tholians should be the cavalry in this war. Basically, the structure of the war should be this:
Iconians show up and kill everyone.
The Dominion steps in, and the fight is more even.
This goes on for a while, but Team Federation is still losing.
The Tholians finally show up and start taking names, and we get a series of diplomatic STFs dealing with them, and figuring out their motives. (Everything currently pretty much points to them gathering resources to fight the Iconians.)
With the vast alliance completed, the war is pretty much on an even scale.
And then we win. Somehow.
Also, I don't think the Voth are going to be involved, long-term. They seem to have been pretty much wiped out by the Undine. Oh and I doubt the Undine are going to wind up on our side either. There's more to their motives than has been revealed, since they should currently have enough information to know that the Iconians are behind this. I feel like some of them are knowingly in league with our spriggan-y friends.
