Ok, I went to the Dyson zone for the first time in a while, and I was appalled and insulted by what I saw.
For some reason, Cryptic has replaced the little coloured bubbles foes drop on defeat with gigantic globes. What, you think we're too stupid to see the coloured bubbles?
Not bad enough you put giant icons on everything. Not bad enough everything interactable glows with an intrusive blaze. Not bad enough the Voth "space" zone is littered with huge orange boxes telling me where to fly (even though the things are ALSO on the map). Now you insult my intelligence even further by putting these giant, ugly things in the warzone?
I'm ticked off (if you couldn't tell). Do you really think we're this idiotic, that we can't see what's right flipping in front of us? I've grown tired of it. How about trying to make the setting a LITTLE immersive?
What do I mean? How about instead of giant glowing coloured balls, creatures drop things that look like equipment? You know, a backpack or contaner?
I'd even allow for them to glow like every other thing does, but ONLY if you let me turn that TRIBBLE off! I can SEE. I don't need glowing flashing things to tell me what to do, I have eyes and a brain. Don't treat me like an idiot, it makes me angry.
Just once, I'd like to come to these forums to express how Turbine has made me HAPPY. Why not start with this?
Once, I was simply called Mojo. Now, I'm forced into a new name, but don't be fooled, I'm the original STO Mojo!
This game needs detailed crafting, exploration and interaction systems.
You would be surprised to see how much hand holding some people need. In fact, a lot of people need it.
I've seen it over and over. And as a Foundry Author, I've seen some comment that made me facepalm and wonder how some people could simply stay alive all those years without any guide on how to breath and eat.
You'll get used on ignoring all these useless (for you and me, at least) handholding.
For some reason, Cryptic has replaced the little coloured bubbles foes drop on defeat with gigantic globes. What, you think we're too stupid to see the coloured bubbles?
I remember hearing about how colorblind people were having a hard time seeing the bubbles even while playing in colorblind mode. It is possible this was done mostly for their benefit.
No, I am not who you think I am. I am someone different. I am instead a banana.
This is STO, a game in which players get lost in a social zone, that's a giant circle.
hahaha, put a smile on my face reading that
And yeah I would like a lot less handholding, but I'm guessing its in the developers best interest to hand hold those players who need it, as confused newbies are probably more likely to quit the game than a veteran gamer who has invested time and money in the game
These are the Voyages on the STO forum, the final frontier. Our continuing mission: to explore Pretentious Posts, to seek out new Overreactions and Misinformation , to boldly experience Cynicism like no man has before.......
Guess I'm an idiot. I actually found the white and orange mission indicators useful. I don't know if there's an option to turn them off...
By "globes" do you mean command credits or the red/green/blue/yellow/purple buffs? Aside from command credits getting a pick-up animation I don't recall any other changes since they were first introduced.
Yes, some people need help in direction, some don't. Gotta help those that do

I suppose I shouldn't expect much from a community that kept asking where to find the Admiral's Office was when it was literally right in front of them with a giant glowing door and a big "Admiral's Office" sign over it.
That said, I'm not one of those kind of people. I'd be happy if you just let me turn that stuff off.
Yea...
There are several kinds of people in STO, but you can basically categorize it into two groups:
Those that need help, and those who don't. Cryptic has chosen the way that says "we are going to side with the one who needs help".
Not that there is nothing wrong with that, but unfortunally those of us who generally don't really need that much help are forced to live with that.
For example: As far as I can determine, the lightshow that shows when you fire abilities, is to allow the people who havn't figured out what the little icons below your targets avatar is for, or the aura around people on ground that you have selected.
So instead of creating a immerseive experience for those who just want a clear space, they've decided it's best to just force it on people, without the option to turn it off.
Personally, I have no target boxes, no shield indicators... In fact I've disabled everything not "just space" that I could.
But there is still the ability effects that pop every time a player or a NPC activates them... If I could disable those as well, I would.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
I beg to differ, I see plenty of idiots in the game.
Indeed. Try to pug something as simple as CSE with an inadequate team and the thing goes to pot. Not to mention the near endless threads of having JJ trek and T5 connies implemented, et al. But I digress.
Seriously though, if you don't need these handholding thingies, ignore them. Almost everybody ignores them.
The only thing I find to be a little insulting is the "puzzle" in A Step Between Stars. I mean c'mon, it is pick the console that has the same color as the giant color in front of you. What is next, putting cubes and spheres in their correctly shaped entry?
But for the "giant" battlezone credits, just don't look at them. Ignore them. It is not too difficult.
I suppose I shouldn't expect much from a community that kept asking where to find the Admiral's Office was when it was literally right in front of them with a giant glowing door and a big "Admiral's Office" sign over it.
I have lost count of the number of times I have been asked, in real life, where something is when the person was literally outside it, over the road from it or it was in direct eye line. Though to be fair some signs aren't that obvious, and they could be strangers to the area.
Then I can add how often when out shopping I have walked right past something I was looking for a few times and then asked for help from a shop assistant. Let's throw in how often I can't see something in the cupboard that is staring me in the face. It's how I have ended up with 10 tins of tuna, though I doubt the cats will complain, or 6 tins of beans.
I think we've all been there at some point or other.
There is a very basic problem with STO: A lot of people that "grew up" with classic space games and/or Star Trek games and are most likely Star Trek fans themselves play this game and assume it is meant to be a permanent, consistent online representation of Star Trek Bridge Commander, Starfleet Command and 25th Anniversary/A Final Unity combined. That's what many of us would like to see.
The sad truth is, Star Trek Online is nothing like that. It is pretty much the 12 GB equivalent of Angry Birds. A casual, free to play online game you can shove into your lunch break. And the playerbase of those games is the target audience for STO and I don't want to judge ayone by saying that. It's just a completely different view on playing a computer game. One group wants a immersive experience, one group wants an interactive screen saver. And STO is more akin to the latter.

T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.

Ironically, when I signed up for STO, I expected the love-child of Star Trek Bridge Commander and Star Trek Elite force 2... Two very well designed games that almost entirely balanced the graphics and gameplay.
What I did get was the TRIBBLE son of Star Trek - Legacy and The fallen... Only the fallen actually has properly scaled interiors.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
This, being the most casual of casual games, needs to accommodate everyone. Regardless of common sense, language or familiarity with Star Trek.
Honestly I'm not bothered by it. Most games these days have crazy amounts of hand holding and a few giant icons isn't making much difference on top of the big yellow arrow and objective HUD boxes we already have.
Even in the real world most drivers rely on sat nav systems to get from A to B now, why should the far future be any different?
This discussion actually made me think of the Season 5 patch.
Back then, ThomasTheCat was taked with creating a series of cartoon-icons, to dumb the "help finding my way around ESD" down.
Back then, we had really good looking signs and maps at ESD, and well looking icons. Then they decided that people were too dumb to read those signs and make the Icons (under massive protests I might add), under the argument that "it was to appeal to all audiences", and that "it would make things easier".
Again, ironically, despite all the warnings and explanations we gave them, people STILL ask the same questions.
Basically they did alot of dumb work, that was not only ugly, but did'n work anyways.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
I honestly havent a CLUE what the OP is on about. I am in the battleground right now, the battlezone command credits (for calling reinforcements) are the same small purple/pink orbs they have always been and the buffs, most notably dropped in large numbers from the supply runners, are still the same huge symbols they have always been. I see ZERO change.

He is talking about the space zones... If you take missions there (or the ones that randomly pop), they will be highlighted by very large squares.

I remember when they added those god awful signs in ESD to help the F2P'ers because they could get lost. I couldn't' believe it, what's hard about pressing M to bring up the map? Also, it's a circle! It's a sad truth that there are a great many people in this world who are beyond stupid and require a lot of hand holding and spoon feeding. In the UK the average reading age of an adult is that of an 8 year old, it's the standard we have to write our leaflets etc in the NHS so these people can understand, and even then many don't.
I can generally ignore the signs etc and the objective markers generally aren't bad however I HATE the glowing fire thing on interactable objects. It's so bright often you can't even see the object you're interacting with. The old style of it just having a slight shimmer to it worked perfectly fine, but thanks to some people who would rather ask for help than to engage their own brain cells it has to be HERE IN YOUR FACE.

This game is way too OP. Seriously. :P

It's such an under utilized tool that could be configured to how you want to use it.
Next objective? Check
Loots only? Check
Nearest enemies? Check
I say get rid of all the glowies on screen and give us some Treknology
