A little bit of news came to me in todays email.

PWI and Cryptic are porting Neverwinter to console. PS-4 and Xbox. Betcha thats where Daniel is working. This decision was announced few days a little bit back in an obscure technical corner of the net and just now wound its way to me. PWI apparently started last year with a project to port all their MMO's to consoles. Thats would technically include STO, and Champions
also. Got nothing against console players, but I have been on X-Box live and they are the most incoherent potty mouthed bunch of gamers I have ever heard.

Umm if ya'll be porting STO to PS4 and xbox...

Um pretty please... give em their own servers... Or give us places in game we can run away from them where console gamers cannot go. Preferably before launching a console version.

Since STO and CO were originally supposed to be both PC and Console I do not see it possibly happening to be all that newsworthy - especially now that the website is going more Console/Tablet friendly. :)

Edit: I should add that I do not know that the above is what Dan is doing, but it would not surprise me that PWE is doing it, even if Dan is not in charge.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

    Ahem.

This is the type of attitude that perpetuates the stereotype of angry gamers and the so-called console "war". So what if they port to consoles? That's a good thing - more people will play. And cross-console servers? That'd be expensive, but awesome.

Even though I feel that PC is better (though only because of it's versatility, which comes at a price - namely, the price of a decent PC), there's nothing wrong with consoles and console gamers, by and large, and I don't see why anyone would think otherwise, unless they were very petty about this kind of thing.

The "community" in Neverwinter is what made me stop playing. Purile, juvenile and all relentless whiners. This will only get worse with console peasants providing insight into other players' questionable maternal parentage.

The majority, no all, of the players who use PS4 is what you described ^^^^^^.

Consider a $150 Nvidia card already beats the GPU in the Xbox One and PS4, your opinion would be a highly uneducated one. Nor do you seen to have much experience with the average console gamer. If you deny that the Neverwinter player base is not already garbage then you have never, ever played it.

And that's what the ignore function is for... :p

Though there needs to be a UI redesign / rebalance, I have no clue how my Sci-royars will fly on a pure XBox controller - as it is I've overburdened my trays (13 BOff slots, 10 Captain, 3 Devices, 4 Consoles, 2 Reputation, Transformation, Fold, Slipstream, DI, Warp core Capacitor, fireworks - this is 38 slots and between "normal", Ctrl- Alt- Shift- I have 40 "hot slots"...

And this is leaving subsystem targetting & shield rebalancing on the standard UI interfaces...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

I doubt sto is going to console. BUT If it were, they would most likely follow Square's example with FFXIV (Seriously): Over there, console and pc mingle together, but consoles run their own graphical system and pc's have more options for graphics. Therefore when the PS3/4 gets older, they won't slow down pc people who can upgrade graphics cards at any time.

That right there, Cryptic, if you do intend to go the console route addtion to STO, is how you do that :)

But this "omg console omg pc" TRIBBLE needs to go away. It's nothing but an excuse to bash people. And There is enough Hatred in the world.

Maybe this should be viewed as an opportunity- set up new private servers for the hardcore RPers and Console players. (That's one set of servers, mind you- for both groups to coexist on, away from teh ebil current players trolling with their disco balls and console hatred.) :D

sweet :) I plan on building my own SteamBox this summer. It will be nice to play sto on a bigger screen. Well, that's if they port STO for consoles...otherwise the controls will be awful.

    Anyways, interesting news

You can only put a finite number of people on the ignore list before you have to start un-ignoring some of them to free up space for more ignores. :P

Nor Sony, nor Microsoft allows any form of cross-platform gameplay. So you are safe from the hordes of console gamers.

Sony does. FFXI was on the PS2 and FFXIV is out right now on PS3. They also just started the PS4 beta testing. They don't have separate servers, they all play on the same ones as the PC people do.

I don't see this as a bad thing, hear me out.

I'm not sure of how PWE system works but it might go like this:

All zen purchases go directly to PWE, doesn't matter what game it is. PWE tracks where the zen is transferred to, the games and their studio's receive funding based on how much zen is transferred to their games. So if Neverwinter and/or STO are ported to either/both PS4 or Xbox 1, Cryptic will receive more funding, giving us better games. Hate PWE all you want but they do know what they are doing.

Yep. PWE knows exactly what they're doing- thus STO porting to consoles making more money for Cryptic means more money paid to PWE's executives and investors, and Cryptic goes on their merry way with the same budget as before.

First, is there a source for this news so we can all look at it firsthand?

Second, considering the reasons why PWE would be interested in porting MMO games to console, I don't see them segregating the users unless there's a technical reason for doing so.

At that, it might make some sense on Neverwinter where there are multiple shards to choose from already.

Less so for Champions and Star Trek where we've had a single-server model from day one.

Also, the controls for both Champs and STO are really set up for keyboard/mouse users. Neverwinter was designed with a more console-like control scheme from the start.

It could happen. It's the same core engine, after all. I just don't think it's worth worrying about at this point.

Looks like it might be legit.

Hello Console reacting time is MUCH faster than PC reacting time that would be chaos in PVP ....

No, trolls will just go to the place they can get reactions out of people, They do this now even if Rper moves locations they only follow and harass again, GMs seem to not do a thing about this, and actually defend the behavior. So all in all this is probably why RP on STO is so dead and not very exciting to partake of.

That and some rpers are so jaded to this abuse and cryptic not smacking down this behavior, that trying to rp with these rpers on STO is difficult to impossible. All in all, RP on STO is dead.

How does one play NW on a PS4 controller?? Aren't there a lot of hotkeys you need to worry about?

Moreover, the amount of abilities in a game like this: STO or NW makes the game controllers kind of asinine.

This is the kind of controller a ps4 would need for an MMO:

I agree, it has to be a new MMO. I don't recall when STO console was anounced, they had to get a new project head for it.

I would think that if Dan were head of this project, and this project was announced late last year, there would be no secrecy to what Dan is doing. That leads me to believe that Dan is working on something else.
Hmmm, then how come I remember that, when the Dreamcast console shared a server with PC users on Half Life DM, PC users destroyed the console users due to....er....slow reaction time on the part of the console users?

It's not the machines, per se, its just that mouse look rules over anything a console controller can do.

The speed advantage that bribngs over-rules any small hardware advantage due to optimisation.

Additionally, if we were talking STO, then a console controller will always be slower to navigate the controls we use now.

Mouse and keyboard is way quicker than any controller so far.
