I would think that if Dan were head of this project, and this project was announced late last year, there would be no secrecy to what Dan is doing. That leads me to believe that Dan is working on something else.

Know what I'd love it to be?

    Not an MMO.

However, a single player RPG using the STO engine might be fun.

Something along the lines of the original Dragon Age perhaps?

Hmmm, then how come I remember that, when the Dreamcast console shared a server with PC users on Half Life DM, PC users destroyed the console users due to....er....slow reaction time on the part of the console users?

It's not the machines, per se, its just that mouse look rules over anything a console controller can do.

The speed advantage that bribngs over-rules any small hardware advantage due to optimisation.

Additionally, if we were talking STO, then a console controller will always be slower to navigate the controls we use now.

Mouse and keyboard is way quicker than any controller so far.
Several CO players swear by the game's native support for the XBox 360 controller. (I haven't used it myself, as it requires the purchase of another accessory to interface the controller and computer, but I've heard quite a bit about it.)

How does one play NW on a PS4 controller?? Aren't there a lot of hotkeys you need to worry about?

Moreover, the amount of abilities in a game like this: STO or NW makes the game controllers kind of asinine.

No, NW has very few abilities active at a given time. It was obviously designed with consoles in mind from the beginning.

... PWI apparently started last year with a project to port all their MMO's to consoles. Thats would technically include STO, and Champions
also. Got nothing against console players, but I have been on X-Box live and they are the most incoherent potty mouthed bunch of gamers I have ever heard.

Another poster mentioned STO was supposed to be console too from the start..that's not true. STO was purely a pc MMO and was made in the time consoles were not supporting such features (only one that did it was FFXI and that was only because Square Enix had a time-tested system that worked in Japan for years before it came to the US).

PWI making it a console? You bet. That chinese company will milk every dollar it can. Sadly, a console port also means STO will be dumbed down even further. Dumbing down games are the only way to port them o console merely because the controls are limited and the mass playerbase is not seeking a long term game but a short term pewpew.

I've played DC Universe online, which is PC/PS3/PS4, and you can have a max of 11 powers/consumables slotted at once. I think that if they tried porting STO to the PS4, you'd have to make a lot of changes to support the controller.
(And as an interesting FYI, the Playstation players make up something like 2/3 of the people who play DC.)

I suppose that may be true.

i knew a guy that played quake Wars using a CAD tablet.

I guess, to be scrupulously fair, some PC games may be perfectly playable with a console interface. At least, for some people.

I know, as a lefty, that many PC devices others swear by cramp my hands.

However, on the whole and especially with a game with as many sub menus as STO, PC controls will always have an advantage over console controls.

    Almost always....lol

    You are incorrect: http://www.videogamer.com/pc/star_trek_online/news/star_trek_online_on_console_scrapped.html

The original plan was for CO and STO to support both.
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

I don't really care where Dan is as long as he isn't here. if memory serves he is the person that wanted dinosaurs with freaking lasers on their heads. so good riddance , just hope his replacement is not so childish.

No, that was Geko who wanted the dinosaurs - not that I have any issue with it. Dinosaurs in Trek are no stranger then sentient rocks. :)

Not sure exactly what those are from, but judging by the (C) 2007 on each of them, if they are the same project he's working on, they'll probably be unrecognizable after 6-7 years of sitting on the shelf and/or development.

A little bit of news came to me in todays email.

PWI and Cryptic are porting Neverwinter to console. PS-4 and Xbox. Betcha thats where Daniel is working. This decision was announced few days a little bit back in an obscure technical corner of the net and just now wound its way to me. PWI apparently started last year with a project to port all their MMO's to consoles. Thats would technically include STO, and Champions
also. Got nothing against console players, but I have been on X-Box live and they are the most incoherent potty mouthed bunch of gamers I have ever heard.

Umm if ya'll be porting STO to PS4 and xbox...

Um pretty please... give em their own servers... Or give us places in game we can run away from them where console gamers cannot go. Preferably before launching a console version.

they'll probably have to have separate servers anyway as I doubt they can get patches past MS WHQL certification (especially with Cryptic's QA procedures); at the same rate they patch the PC client servers.

You can only put a finite number of people on the ignore list before you have to start un-ignoring some of them to free up space for more ignores. :P

I see something to monetize ! Additional Ignore slots ! :D

yes/no. There is a different way things are handled when it comes down to MMO's on consoles regarding patching so that isn't a super huge issue. As for Dan being over here that wouldn't shock me. He does have XBL experience so it'd be a smart idea to bring him into that. As for any other mmo's cryptic is making, we'll just have to wait and see :)

I would like STO to be on a console though. More avenues for players to gain access = more players! :)

Since the studio that became cryptic north worked on pirates of the burning sea I can see cryptic wanting to capitalize on that experience. My personal opinion is that Stal is working on an age of sail / pirate mmo. The ship mechanics from sto would lend itself to that genre of game and having someone well versed in that system would help speed up development.

This game would be impossible to play on a console without a MASSIVE gameplay revamp, Neverwinter works because it does not have that many skills to use and there are few enough that it would not overburden the controller. STO has WAY too many skills/abilities/etc to be able to be used on a controller in any viable way

You can only know this if you have used a PS4, and since you claim 100% of anyone who has ever used a PS4 is like that, I guess that means you must be like that too.

You know, I'd actually like that. I could have a lot of fun with an MMO with that profile, even more if Dan is working on that. :) Aaaaarghhh mateys!!! :P

BranFlakes, c'mon, spill the beans ;) - is DStahl working on a sailship/pirate MMO?

A 'complex' mmo like STO on a console. No way.

    Consoles = suck

STO on consoles = even suckier.

Idc what they do really, as long as it doesnt 'impair' STO's PC client and making it noobish, well i guess they cant force us to use Auto aim because mmo's are pretty much that lol.

Its going to be funny tho if they 'port' STO to a console, I'd assume its going to be a native client tho, and nto another rip-off like the mac version which is pretty much just half emulated with libraries (wine)

Wow. So you must think this is "your" personal game. Could you make a more entitled statement?

There is a magic thing called the IGNORE LIST.
Learn how to use it and stop calling for segregation of the player base.

What's next, anyone who doesn't conform to "your" view of the perfect mature gamer just not being given any service?
    This isn't Arizona.

Seriously, all the entitled people around here really make me wonder some days.

No, it is not. As has already been stated, and corroborated within the thread, PWE is converting NWNs to be also usable on Gaming Consoles. What might happen to STO and CO after that is yet to be seen.

Did you girlfriend dump you today? You're nastier then usual. :)

The tread was about DStahl and what he might be doing now. Since BranFlakes had no issues with posting in the thread I am uncertain why you need to take issue with it.

And there is certainly nothing wrong with people speculating as to whether or not STO might follow suit. We did the same thing when CO was announced as going FTP.
