STO Servers are in Danger

This new group of Internet jerks are DDOSing just about every game company known.

This is serious business, they managed to take down Minecraft, Steam.com and all of EA.

Be wary Cryptic, your hardware may be in danger:

DDOS happens, is annoying, stops, game moves on. Its obnoxious, but these kinda of clowns want attention, so why give it to em? I mean cripes, with the amount of attention they've received over the last few days, its just gonna encourage them to do so again.

Yea... OP, you are doing exactly what they wan't you to...

It's like the kids who go around breaking things, because they think bad attention is better than no attention.

Don't give it to them... just ignore them, and move on... I mean, it's not like the STO servers are THAT stable to begin with... This wont be no different.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

Seriously hope they bring down this POS game altogether, it's horrible. I booted up dosbox recently and played 2 real star trek games lol, A final Unity and 25th anniversary.

Hopefully they bring down STO soon lol. Be awesome if they could do it permanently.

    Anyway I'm off to work.

Well, really, it could be good for the game. I mean, someone messing with sub-par servers would actually make the company have to update, wouldn't it? I say let em have at it and watch better servers be born.

*shrugs* In other words, another day in the life of STO. There's other stuff to do anyways.

So you don't like the game, and you would be happy to see it brought down so all the people who do enjoy it cant play it any more?

    merry christmas to you too.

As much as I want to dismiss these dummies as trolls, I get nervous doing so.

I just found out that these guys TRIBBLE the FBI.

Nah. I've been here long enough, and post frequently, unlike the poster I was responding to.

Besides, hardly "pointing the finger" considering that said poster openly stated that he wants those described in the OP to suceed and thinks STO is a "POS".

    Forget it.

    Read this post:

and you'll see Nabreeki's curret modus operandi is to take everything a step too far just for lulz.

These DDos attacks always make me smile. Why? Because they are actually very easy to prevent.

Annoying as they may be though, they don't actually do any physical harm except take down servers for a while..

It's the back door Hacks to steal personal details - they're the ones that concern me as this shows a severe lack of security measures & protocols in place from the company who got TRIBBLE!!

no point worrying about what might happen. if it happens there is nothing you can do about it and if it dont then thats that. scaremongering just for the hell of it wont change how people operate.

Easy to prevent? You don't have a clue what you're talking about. Or if you do, I have a nine-figure business opportunity for you.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev

I hardly think STO would be anywhere near the top of the list for these people.... they crave attention and there are better targets out there than Cryptic.

It's no different to any other security concerns that every company work against all the time. Once they have all the measures they need to 100% counter this hacking technique script kiddies will soon find another hole in the wall to exploit.

One could argue groups like this are doing a free service. They are showing all these companies the holes in their security measures and forcing them to fill it.

Yes they are going about it in the most immature way possible. Yes it is quite illegal to do so and they deserve everything the law will throw at them. But be thankful they are just crashing servers and not stealing your bank details (as far as I can tell).

Their attacks don't last long and they don't stop us from playing games in the long run. They'll get bored and/or arrested soon enough.

    Ok... burning...

Look guys (for whoever dosen't know already): DDoS is NOT hacking... Heck, it barely qualifyes as intelligent.

DDoS, or Distributed Denial-of-Service is simply someone who was willing to pay 10$ or less for having a automated botnet (or similar), spam a given IP or IP-range...
There is no actual hacking involved... it's merely letting 100,000 cars loose on a small road at once.

Hacking and Cracking, white-hat or black-hat is a very different term, and the fact that people actually think that DDoS is Hacking is about as stupid as the people who used to call P2P downloads hacking...

When you hack, you attack actual security flaws to either help companies fix them, or to exploit them for farming data for personal or financial gain, or to sort- or long term damage whoever it is you are attacking.

A DDoS, as someone mentioned earlier, is fairly simple to get rid of, and rarely lasts more than a few hours at best.
Working on a webpage for a public installation, I've defended against my fair share of DDoS'es... It is NOT hacking...
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...

It is unlikely that STO will be a target, it is no where near high profile enough compared to Steam, Minecraft or Origin.

On the one hand you're right, on the other, Neverwinter is bright and shiny, and they could well be drawn like magpies towards it, and so STO will suffer by loose association.

This. Sadly, they rarely quit before they are caught.
They are trolls, it is neccesary to not speak of them. They grow that way.
Only thing for us to do is to ignore them, and let the developers handle it when neccesary. The reason developers and server hosters never talk about them, is because... ...the trolls grow. Instead of talking about them, they will implement [redacted] to [redacted]. This way the [redacted] trolls will be [redacted] by FBI, or the eqvivalent of that, in the countries the [redacted] trolls spawn in.

The person mentioned on the first page took down the gaming severs using a program called Low Orbit Ion Cannon. While Anonymous has used that program in past attacks, this sort of thing doesn't match their profile at all. The Low Orbit Ion Cannon program is on Source Forge, anyone can download and run the program. Which means anyone with the technical know-how just needs to download that program and they instantly have a method for knocking out any server that hasn't been configured to screen out the program's flooding.

As for the people who are doing this to games, many people want to give them a good timeout, including me, but it's better just to ignore them.
