Since you observe that the packet loss is at a Cogent Communication network node, its not a Cryptic packet loss problem, its a Cogent Communication packet loss problem, and the only thing that Cryptic can do is complain to Cogent Communications...

I really do hope there are no options available to them other than Cogent, because if the only reason we have to put up with this is because Cogent is the lowest bidder....

Yes, Cryptic needs to reach out to cogent. Last night I gave up on the game because the lag was so bad. I forgot to close my dedicated ping window which was still pinging cryptic servers and today (about 16 hours later) I scrolled up and saw that there are still intermittent packet losses. These needs to be fixed because it is making the game unplayable from my (and others') point of view.

Though do keep in mind that only a small percentage of STO users are suffering from connection problems... (As I haven't had any myself this month..)

And compared to some of the other services that Cogent Communications hosts (e.g. Netflix) PWE is small fish in a big pond. And this would apply to any other Tier 1 Backbone provider that they may host with...

This is not the first time this has happened. And it seems to happen during times of peak stress on particular networks.

It doesn't affect everyone though, hence it's not a priority.

The reality is when things cool down, everything goes back to normal.

Well, I don't understand why Cryptic seems to think that it is their users' problem. Cogent isn't my ISP, it is theirs. Just because the traceroutes seems to always include rr.com (times warner) doesn't mean it is a times warner issue either. Places like Cogent will listen to another business long before I can convince TImes Warner to help little ol' me (according to the other article where cryptic was telling it's customers to deal with it on their own) Not to mention, rr.com doesn't have any control over cogent.com's routers AND the traceroute is closer to cryptic than it is to me. Dunno why Cryptic is leaving this issue up to their users to fight over.

A small number of people experiencing? maybe.. maybe not.. maybe many simply haven't reported it on other ISPs yet

In all fairness Time Warner is a universally terrible ISP, as is Comcast. That said I have Charter, and I've been experiencing this issue. So it's more likely an issue either with Cogent, or even more likely... Cryptic/PWE isn't supplying enough servers to deal with peak load times, especially since this seems to be linked to certain events. Either way I've noticed a lot of people complaining about lag, not a few, a lot. So this really needs to be looked into. They're probably looking into it anyways and just not saying anything about it.
