When it comes to PvP, who would you consider to have the best rounded game in STO.

Not an ego stroking thread. It's an extension of a debate from another thread to see what peoples perception of great players is.

If you don't know what to aspire to to be great, how do you know your headed in the right direction? Right?

PS, also state why you think he / she is as well.

Koopa, Spacepenguin. Some very good escorts.

Koopa and Spacepenguin are up there with MT. Sadly they haven't been on in a long time.

Gotta go with MT, and Hank is a very close second. Most great PvPers have depth in one or two areas, and enough breadth to be competent in the others. These two have depth in nearly everything. They might be the best escort pilots in the game, but they can also jump into any of the various support roles and play 'em like that's the only thing they do.

Me, you can't get more rounded than a 0 :)

It is through repetition that we learn our weakness.
A master with a stone is better than a novice with a sword.

Has damage got out of control?
This is the last thing I will post.

Any player that arrives to a match with enthusiasm; that plays considerately without the need to use fad-builds or exploits.

Someone who can suffer victory or defeat with the same level of humility, and be content in his own victory.

A few come to mind. I would rather not mention them because I know I would miss a few as deserving as the rest. (I just had a Bilbo moment! Freaky)

There is no such thing, only a perceived 'great player' anecdotally .

Like awesome I saw this player do 4 million damage, he must be l33t, when actually he has no team abilities just outright FAW boat in a squishy Scimitar.

My opinion of a great player is someone who is generally helpful and gives new players a helping hand and guides them from the ground up with no condescending behaviour. The best thing is they don't proclaim to be the 'best player'.

They don't necessarily have to be high DPS/Healer players, but players who have been around and know better than to gloat and rename their ships to taunt other players/fleets or rage on zone chat/TS for example

People who think of others first and themselves last gets my vote.

I would agree with g0h4n4 people that try there best to drive the community. Folks that do that while remaining solid players in all aspects of the game are few. Naz is one of those. Always trying to foster good pvp. Helping arrange torunys and pvp matches as often as he can in places like TD. As a player I have also found him to be one of the few originators build wise. I have seen him fly many strange combos, builds that most people would crash and burn he will pull off, for no reason as to find out what works to use in his uber builds. lol

There have been a ton of great players over the 4 years though. Saddly not many of them are really playing anymore. Of course many newer players have jumped in and became very very competent players, I don't mean to sound like grandpa on the porch talking about the good old days. For new players Hank has been mentioned and I will mention CaptainFook as well. The Cap has gotten very good at almost every role by sheer hard work and analysis.

Would be great if Cryptic really did dig in an bring PvP back in STO... it would be great to see old friends like the Gripple Chew ghostwolf and ash get back and battle the range of great players that have been around over the last 4 or so years.

There are lot of awesome PVP'ers, nearly every PVP fleet has one or two good offensive and defensive players. Most of them are heavily specialized and very effective in what they do.

Hm let me see, "best rounded" in my book would include being a bad-TRIBBLE tactical, bad-TRIBBLE CC sci, and bad-TRIBBLE healer... which is if you think about it some very heavy criteria. Out of the hundreds of committed PVP'ers that I've played with and against, only 2 people come to my mind off the top of my head.

One is MT. Very analytical. Perfectionist Min-Maxer. His builds are usually more than rock-solid and most importantly, he understands the game and has the ability to pull off his builds.

The other one - and that may come a bit of a surprise for some - would be Strike from TRH. Having played alongside with him quite a lot, I can safely say he is a TOP5 escort player period. He has a diverse character collection with very strong builds, for pugging, Kerrat and for premade teamplay. No matter what ship, whether its a tac, healer, or sci, he has the means and ability to utilize them effectively. With the exception of MT, he fits your criteria the best.

There are some other players, like Naz and Yoda, who are also among the best. However, I have seen them mostly on tac or sci, and only very rarely as a full no-nonsense healer. Those guys (and some others) meet 2 out of 3 criteria... I am sure however, if they'd choose to play a full healer, they'd excel at that as well...

So far the definition has been as follows from what i gather:

    1. Original thinker
    2. Good all rounder (in any ship and role)
    3. Willing to help individuals
    4. Willing to help the community
    5. Approachable

When i personally look for good players, i look at the following including the above:

    1. Ability to influence a group positively
    2. Ability to pull a pug team together into a cohesive premade unit
    3. Not just an all rounder, but able to call whilst doing said roles
    4. A solid team player who doesn't need to be an innovator - Just "Fits right in"
    5. Knows when someone else came up with something better and adopts it instead of crying fowl
    6. Vision to see where he/she wants his/her fleet to be in a few months time and steers them to it
    7. Not scared to call out BS when "FACTUAL"
    8. Not scared to say they personally F***** up and more importantly understand how they did.
    9. Doesn't blame others for their downfall
    10. Makes the opponent think twice when faced against the said player

My personal opinion will always be biased towards teams because frankly, PvP for me is about the team and not the individual.

    Follow up question:

Based on what was summarised above, what players make you think "oh Sh**" and make you go supercharged when they enter the arena against you?

Phew, I'm glad none of those things apply to me, Naz. :P

Can't have people thinking I'm a good, useful part of the community, can we?
I remain empathetic to the concerns of my community, but do me a favor and lay off the god damn name calling and petty remarks. It will get you nowhere.
I must admit, respect points to Trendy for laying down the law like that.

    for my experiences....

    i can't name just 1 player....but...

MT has the best timing in the game.

Hank has the best situational awareness in the game...possibly far surpassing every other player in this area.

Naz is most likely the best utility player in the game, he can play any role on the battlefield, and the most engaging theory crafting discussions i've ever had have been with him.

    have fun kill bad guys

    Nobody. :P

I fly a 2-spd automatic, where the tranny's broke and never shifts to 2nd.

Though, if somebody does kill me...I have a tendency to die more, as I forget everything else to pester them for the rest of the match. :D

edit: As an aside, it is kind of funny - thinking about it, eh? The names...I almost never see most of the names mentioned outside of the forums or now and again in OPvP. Then again, I almost exclusively KvF in PUGs...so unless folks are also doing that, I'm almost never going to see them. So this thread, in a sense - could be - along the lines of folks from Burger King going to a McDonald's while sitting down with some folks from Wendy's and asking what everybody likes...going to be based on where they eat.

Damn these are a lot of attributes that someone needs to fulfill haha :)

In an nutshell, who in this community has the soft skills in addition to the "hard" skills...

That's a tough one, I don't think anyone meets these requirements to the letter.

There are a number of people in our community with great soft skills and leadership qualities, however the second requirement (making a pug work) and third requirement (target calling) narrows it down quite a bit.

The individuals that comes closest to it in my opinion would be:

    - Damian from Pandas
    - Yoda from TRH
    - Pug01 from FES

    Runner ups:

    - Thales from Critz/Pandas
    - Naz from Pandas

    Regarding Damian:

Diplomat. Always maintains a positive attitude. Good premade and pug team leader. Great guy to play with and to chat with. Awesome escort player. Everyone who plays together with him can be considered lucky. Unfortunately he is taking a break from the game.

    Regarding Yoda:

Not only a good leader and an exceptional player, but also a great guy! His kindness and overall positive attitude was inspiring and it really saddened me like nothing else when he left the game. His target calling skills are among the best in the game (I've tried to learn as much of it as I could) and he made pugs work more than once. Some of his good traits in the soft skill department I tried to adapt in running Inner Circle as a fleet leader.

    Regarding Pug01:

Exceptional fleet leader with a lot of experience and wisdom. Very decent player too! However, he play more ground than space, which really comes close to herecy :P

    Regarding Thales:

I don't know him too well but what I've been told and to a somewhat degree witnessed, he is a good player and good team leader. Overall a good package.

    Regarding Naz:

Veteran PVP'er with good team skills. Community organizer. Most of the time diplomatic, but can bite back when stung.

PS: Someone else came to my mind: Smeagol from La Familia. However he has been inactive the last couple of months.

hm, fleetwise i gotta give it to novacore's darkstar team, and to pandas and space patrol. those three groups give us the strongest fights, and normally losses for us.

Hurdles to overcome, in other words. Not saying other fleet/premades arent as good, but those are the three that stick out atm.

Individually id say Riley is one of the most dangerous out there. Perhaps Tvape as well. Decloaking alphastrikers are among the nastiest things we face as a fleet. Only some of us have learned to counter them effectively. Work in progress.

My knowledge of who is who is sadly limited to whoever queues up, but there are a lot of really skilled players in this game that deserve all of their props.

How else would you sort the wheat from the chaff so to speak?

Look what you did to Inner Circle post TRPH era. Not seen many able to do that in such a short period of time to a PVE orientated fleet.

Blackjack as much fun as I had flying with and against him never really did anything accept decloak 4xcannon builds. One of the legends no doubt... but all around player not so much.

Ayatani should have had a job as head bug hunter. Lets be honest good pilot ok player... but all his 5x1 shenanigans were fueled by more then a few grey zone mechanics... and I think he would even admit a few where pretty much flat out exploits. ;)

From the same group of players though Era was a monster healer and flew some very good offensive builds. Frankly I believe a few of the games newer players like hank are better all around... still I would slot him above Ayatani on a well rounded list.

Its to bad all of the games past heros where not playing at the same time. Seeing a GOD/Panda/InnerC/TRH/Critz/TSI/FS/Lag/NocaC/RE/SOB/Sciwiz/CTO/grethor/AI/32/7th/RZR/X (and all the awsome groups I have missed) Super smash up would be pretty awsome (not counting all the traitors that have been in more then one of the above lol). Tons of great players the last 4 years, just never more then a handful ever active at once.

Also if your going to mention the Ayatani and the Blackjack... then I guess you have to include the Keg. :) (who really is in fact super well rounded plays dmg healer and sci like a rockstar leads pugs to wins when ever he played.. and was always super chill and humble. Thinking about it he would likely be my all around pick even though he removed himself from all the fleet nonsense long ago... he'll pop back in at some point I bet)
