New in-game game: Soccer.

roxbadroxbad Member Posts: 695
A few times, when someone has littered an area with balloons and I've been waiting for something before moving on from the area, I've spent that idle time kicking the balloons around. The physics they employ is pretty impressive. At one point I made the suggestion in Fleet chat that we could use one of these balloons to stage a soccer game on our starbase as part of our Fleet Meeting activities.

Now although a rudimentary game can be played as is, a little dev work would make it better.

Maybe using the starbase holodeck. No need to change maps. Just add a couple of goals and a ball to the room. Put the goals on a timer and equip them with a number of lights that can register when a balloon/ball passes their threshold, then kick the ball back into play.

Of course a new map with all the trimmings (akin to the DS9 vs. Vulcans baseball game) would be good, too.

Have you tried playing soccer with the tribbles in your starbase (if you've unlocked it)?

While it might make sense for Starfleet officers to do this in their off time, it wouldnt make much sense for Klingon or Romulan faction players. Therefore, it is not a very good use of dev time to work on a mini-game that only makes sense for 1 faction.

now if we could shoot those balloons and pop them, it would be cool.

This. I discovered Tribble Soccer when that project just came out and Tribble Hockey when last year's winter event came out. Could have discovered it early, but the Frosted Boots had that annoying timer before then so there was no point in using them.

As long as I can shoot any ball I come across, I am all for it.
Don't look silly... Don't call it the "Z-Store/Zen Store"...
Let me put the rumors to rest: it's definitely still the C-Store (Cryptic Store) It just takes ZEN.

lol... the post above you made it viable as a Klingon game.

Then again, I don't see using a ball as being something that the Klingons absolutely would not do. I imagine there wouldn't be as many rules or penalties though. So a true Klingon version would need to engage some PvP aspects that would at least allow for some knock-back/knock-prone.

The problem is that most physics objects in this game are rendered 100% client side. (You can turn them off you see....)

This makes it so that even though two people are seeing a cup/tribble/rock in the same spot it's not the same cup/tribble/rock, so if you kick it, they could very well see it fly in two completely different directions.

    This ^^^^

Ran into the same problem when the tribbles on the starbase first came out, I tried to organize Tribble Races with prizes... only to find out that no outside observer could tell who tribble was where.

Because The Beautiful Game has no appeal to a warrior race? Is some sort of pacifistic experience with no real celebration of things a warrior would honor?

Gonna have to give you a yellow card for your post.

You can give whatever color card you want, I honestly dont care. My point is, regardless of the violence that can occur, Klingons and Romulans wearing soccer jerseys sounds like a bad joke. Unless the OP was suggesting that it made sense for Starfleet/KDF/Romulan characters to be playing a sport in their formal military uniforms.

Physics based games have been talked about before, but any objects involved would have to have their render settings changed. It could be done, but I believe it would have to require something other than a minigame to be really considered.

You should care. You could end up costing your team valuable points in the table or a real shot at a cup by racking up penalties.

You have to be joking. A sport based on military things like tactics, teamwork, and essentially steeped in nationalism, and you're bashing the idea because you don't like striped polo shirts with airline company ads and shorts?

That's got nothing to do with the sport or the suggestion. And really, you're complaining about a soccer uniform when ... THIS happened on-screen in an actual TNG episode?

And let's not forget THIS sci-fi sport.

But THIS is what you're upset about?

I think you need to study THIS GIF. For at least an hour straight. And reconsider what you've been posting.

I'm not upset about anything. In fact, judging by your repeated use of all caps words in your post, you seem to be the only person who is remotely "upset" in this thread. So, I recommend taking a break from the internet and getting some fresh air outside. Just because you disagree with someone on a video game message board is no need to get your blood pressure up.

Your judgement is impaired. I'm using all caps to add highlight. You'll note the words being used in all caps are also boldfaced, and most importantly, contain image links.

The style being employed here is to highlight the links. As the images tell a story all their own. I highly recommend you expand your horizons in terms of use of style sheets in both design and writing. Not all uses of capitalization indicate shouting.
Just because you disagree with someone on a video game message board is no need to get your blood pressure up.

But let's get back to the root of that disagreement. You're suggesting that soccer uniforms are out of place in Star Trek, when you know, I linked Worf wearing a pareses squares uniform. And I linked the old BSG pyramid sport uniforms.

Please clarify exactly how a Real Madrid kit is more ridiculous than Boomer wearing straps?

Uhm, I don't think you've been paying attention to this game's development cycle. Because this game still has bugs and issues left over from seasons 1 and 2. The development team is tasked with moving forward. Bug squashing isn't part of that and never has been. Bugs get fixed separately from "new content" being created.

Apparently yours is too, since you thought I was upset when I wasnt.
You're suggesting that soccer uniforms are out of place in Star Trek,

Nope, I never said that. I think that it makes complete sense that Starfleet officers(of all species) would play soccer in their off duty time, and wear soccer uniforms when they were playing. After all, soccer is an Earth based sport, and all Starfleet officers train at the academy on Earth, so even if they are not human they would still have been exposed to Earth sports. However, it would not make sense for Starfleet officers to be playing soccer in their military uniforms.

On the other hand, I do not think it would make sense for members of the Klingon and Romulan militaires to be playing soccer in either earth based soccer uniforms OR their respective military uniforms. Neither one of those options would make sense for those factions.

Well... the Sisko played baseball against a team of Vulcans. So.... yeah. :P

Like I said in my previous post, Starfleet is an Earth based organization, so it makes sense that Starfleet officers would play Earth based sports, regardless of their species, since they trained on Earth and were exposed to Earth culture. What I'm saying doesnt make sense is for members of the actual Klingon or Romulan Empires to be playing Earth sports and wearing Earth sports uniforms.

True. But I'm still getting warmed up. I'm hoping to get this discussion to a point where JJPrize has to consider what's more ridiculous, Worf in a throwback Arsenal kit, or Archer dressed for a tough match of Water Polo against some Xindi aquatics.

Don't know how that could have in any way been inferred from my post.

eta: Oh... wait... I did reference that DS9 episode. :o

When I said "all the trimmings" I was referring to the field, not the attire. Maybe with an NPC umpire to handle the ball.

Because Vulcans just love love love to embrace earth culture. And "The" Sisko is such a fine example of down to earth earthiness, amirite?

Also, isn't the incident in the Path to 2409 that sparks the Klingons to attack and conquer the Gorn, a baseball game?

I just searched the word "baseball" and found only 1 entry which has nothing to do with what you are talking about. Check for yourself here:
