Fatal Error On Launching Game

It was working fine for me yesterday and I've not made any software or hardware changes in the mean time. However, this afternoon, after it did the latest patch, it started refusing to let me into the game.

I gets to the 'Engage' thing fine, but I click that and it just hangs on that intiial logo screen then crashes to desktop.

A message pops up that says:
Fatal Error: Unable to initialize on-demand patching and connect to Patch Server: The connection was idle for too long

I tried Force Verify, it didn't work and resulted in the same message. It also prevented me from filing a crash report as that window, which popped up when I closed the 'fatal error' message didn't stay up long enough for me to type anything into it and said 'unknown' in the ID box.

Am currently trying with the opposite toggle on my 'on demand patching' setting (turning it on instead of off as I had it) and doing another force verify. If this doesn't work, I'll try restarting my computer.

Nope, toggling the on-demand patching didn't work. Trying a full computer restart now.

Fatal Error: Unable to initialize on-demand patching and connect to Patch Server: The connection was idle for too long .

This says your Launcher can't establish or maintain a Internet connection to the STO Servers...

What does your 'Net Test' and 'Trace Route' network diagnostics look like? Both are described in this thread... http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=225155 Edited with the correct link

... as it sounds like either you or your ISP is having connection issues with the STO servers....

The 'tracert' thing gives me all numbers below 100 (below 50 in fact, highest is a 39 ms).

As for the 'nettest', all the numbers are within the range posted in the thread.

It has also been suggested to me that my launcher files may have become corrupt. Is this possible?

After a couple restarts and one final force verify, it let me into the game.

I am having the exact same error. Everything was also just fine for me yesterday. I patched today, put in my password, clicked Engage, then got the error shortly after the Cryptic splash screen popped up.

I've tried rebooting and also have tried a force verify. I'll try another force verify to see if that helps.

I wanted to try the link mentioned in this thread to test connectivity, but the page would not open for me.

    EDIT:

After a few more force verifies, I was able to finally log in as well.

I too am getting random crashes on starting up the launcher. I figure it's due to my poor connection the STO servers.
As per the other threads, the Cogent peer service that PWE is using has become very unstable, congested and seems to experience high packet loss and high pings. I would guess that they are both related.
