Anyhow, here's the link to the ARC Q&A basically letting us know it will be mandatory in the near future, in case you didn't read the glaring post made about it in the news section.
For those who missed it on my Livestream -- Official STO Mac Beta starts on Season 8 launch day, 11/12!
Cheers,
Brandon =/\=
Great news! Now I wont have to bootcamp crappy Windows to play STO anymore. And @ravin: spoken like a Microsoft fanboy. Do you know how many people would kick their PCs out a door if more people did what Cryptic is doing? And the numbers are growing. Besides, Mac users are under served, this will add many potential customers to STO.

Sorry, Linux fanboy here, but you don't see me here crying that there's no Linux support.
Not sure what DX11 has to do with this announcement....the 12th can't come soon enough!
Actually, when I rolled back DX to 9.0c, I noticed a significant improvement in the game's overall gfx stability, not to mention the now total lack of frame rate issues I now enjoy, even in superspam PvP situations.
Oh, and great news for Mac owners !
"So my fun is wrong?"
No. Your fun makes everyone else's fun wrong by default.

I haven't cried about there not being a Mac version. I haven't seen anyone else cry about it, either. All I have seen is therealdoh123 taking the initiative to make a wrapper for it and start a forum thread. Obviously that had enough traffic to convince Cryptic to make a Mac version.
Here's a free piece of advice. Realise that there are other people in this world besides you and respect that. It will help a lot of people not feel the negative things that I'm thinking about you right now.
I wonder how well the Mac beta will perform versus Boot Camp or doh's wineskin. I'm guessing somewhere in the middle - not even the best Mac port houses like Aspyr can spin gold from Apple's drivers 100% of the time - though whatever the case I'll be glad just to have a new option for those days when I'm too lazy or hungover to reboot.
I will note however that some games like EVE run identically on OS X and Windows with the same hardware. If at all possible, do what they did.
Anyway, +1 Cryptic. I wasn't expecting this so soon.
Well Spyware does work better on Windows machines after all.
So if i ever have to reinstall STO, id better get myself a nice Mac... well played PWE, well played
The way things work, probably right after you got a Mac they'd announce Arc being ported to it.
But the critical thing for me is that the whole "you can't have your old launchers because everyone must use Arc" line turned out to be a big fat lie.
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev

took them a long time though... i started that up during beta, long before Perfect World. I'm glad they see the benefit of it now. I'd always rather have a good supported Mac version than having to roll my own.
I haven't played STO in several months now... looking forward to playing again.

They may have taken their time but at least they're now doing it.
My honest opinion? Your work HAD to be one of the things driving the port. Your forum thread showed them that there was a market out there. A market I think they realise is profitable.
I'm glad nobody asked a person as selfish as you, then.

I am entitled to express my opinions how I see fit, and I'm sure if you do some digging you'll find people crying foul because there is no Mac support.

Thank you.
Your argument is flawed...
If they think the Mac Users are a market that is profitable because they are used to spend far to much money on useless cr... oh wait! Now I get it!
Joke aside, it's still flawed or are you seriously saying the "Mac Users" are a bigger part than Klingons and/or PvP?
heh, I like how this has devolved into a flame of Mac sucks and ARC sucks. Its good to see mac support in some official aspect finally start. With some basic coding standards and guidelines with a minimal change to your QA process you can make a game and engine that works under all three OSs using translation software. The main issue is keeping your code in sync and deciding how much native code and calls to implement... and how much to leave up to translation.
The main problems with working OS X support is its always behind when it comes to OpenGL support (the most recent release supports a maximum of the 3 year old OpenGL 4.1 API for instance) and for Direct3D depends on translation software for compatibility (though the most recent OpenGL 4.4 can handle some DirectX API calls natively). The other main issue is the regular deficit in performance the drivers have for OS X when compared to Windows and Linux (5% to 25% on average). Linux has its own problems (mostly dependency and distro hell), but at least then the binary drivers tend to have about par performance and support for recent OpenGL releases.
Honestly OS X is a good platform for games, its just Apple has no interest in doing anything for the mac gaming community or even making it easy to do large re-releases between iOS and OS X to take advantage of that path using the latest technologies in a similar way Microsoft tries to make porting between 360 (and soon Xbox One) and Windows easy. I mean Mavericks doesn't even include OpenGL 4.3 support that has native compatibility for all of the calls in iOS 7's OpenGL 3.0ES. Also the less said about Game Centre the better. If there was some incentive by Apple to keep within one year of gaming API releases and incentives for tightening up the 3D drivers for the graphics cards we may see more cross platform ports across all three platforms, but the way it is now even if you adopt a cross platform engine... Linux is just to steep to justify Q&A costs let alone support costs... and OS X's drivers are just a mess. Perhaps one day we will see good games taking advantage of all the amazing multi-platform middle-ware out there today (Source, Unigen, etc) and using a combination of hybrid translation and native code to give a good experience while allowing easy portability.
As for those that think this project will take many resources away from Star Trek Online I suggest you look at the record. The OS X and Linux community (through the WINE project) have done most of the work for Cryptic. They got the translation software working, used their own time to report issues and push to get them addressed upstream, and its taken years for Cryptic to even offer a basic beta version. Until just recently all Cryptic has had to do was watch this community and wait to license the middle-ware (most like Codeweavers or Transgaming) while going through the mac users forum to go post by post to note any issues that would address their new official version. Sure for the last few months they may have had to work one or two of their staff members full time to test this in-house and communicate with their engine people and the middle-ware company to get some issues fixed but its hardly like a huge portion of the team was pulled to re-write the engine to a full OpenGL and Obj-C project... though that would have been awesome. I would be amazed if there was even a substantial amount of new native code being added to the game aside from a few minor engine tweaks to work around things like the Bajoran Caves or other areas where the engine was glitchy anyway (even on Windows).
Now here is just hoping this doesn't end up like another GuildWars 2 for mac beta. Those folks don't even bother pushing out updates for the middle-ware to fix known issues despite already paying to license it. x.x
any ideas what the minimum operating system will be? i have a 10.6.8...hopefully its high enough...
If its using the latest middle-ware it will be OS X 10.7.5 minimum. To fully support Mavericks most engines and game middle-ware have pulled OS X 10.6 and lower support, it was just getting to be to much and your stuck with OpenGL ~2.1 anyways so why even bother? Sorry, but you need to upgrade your OS (if your sticking back for driver or compatibility reasons) or your hardware is probably to obsolete to run it at full resolution at low settings.
On the plus side 10.9 is a free upgrade? I know it still has some issues it will take a few patches to work out and the graphics drivers still have the occasional issue.
i saw that, ill probably wait until the actual release though since i have no way to backup my drives...and im clueless when it comes to updating:P i really do not want to permanently mess up my comp...
Having programed for MAC for too many years, i can say... I HATE MACS!, but, it's GREAT that new players are able to play, and they are most welcome :P
I am entitled to express my opinions how I see fit, and I'm sure if you do some digging you'll find people crying foul because there is no Mac support.
All I see is your opinion showing us that you're crying, not us.

I don't think that it's a case of comparing whether Mac users are a bigger market that Klingons and/or PvP as the groups aren't mutually exclusive. I'm sure that there are many Klingon and PvP players that use Macs.
A few of my friends have refrained from playing STO as they didn't wish to make a windows partition on their Macs. Now that they're releasing the beta they'll start playing. This won't prevent them from playing Klingon or PvP, but Cryptic will have a larger market to sell to when they start.
Thats indeed some news I didn't expect to hear ... I stand down corrected. Good the Mac users get their atention.
Personally I am not a Mac user, but another Linux user, and I wonder now that a Mac version is on the way, whether there will be a cross compiled version for the major Linux Distros as well (that step shouldn't be that big then porting it to Mac)? I doubt that Cryptic will hand over the sources (and its understandable), so I have to hope for that to happen some time as well.
