STO Official Beta Mac Version! Coming 11/12/13!

I wanted to say thank, thank, THANK YOU!

This was completely unexpected and so satisfying to hear!

Now the masses of Mac users no longer need to emulate with sub-standard performance (http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=381881) or install Bootcamp/Windows for the sole purpose of running STO.

A million times thank you to PWE/Cryptic for this!

Great news for the Mac users out there!
You're right. The work here is very important.

And I *just* spent two nights ago rebuilding the wine wrapper and engine for STO to run on a new laptop.

Well, glad to see it's official.

I hope this news means that an Official Linux Client is coming as well.

Woo hoo! Awesome! Although I do appreciate the people who supported the Wine version for so long!

Does this mean Arc for Mac as well? If PC users are going to be required to use it...
"Participation in PVP-related activities is so low on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis that we could in fact just completely take it out of STO and it would not impact the overall number of people [who] log in to the game and play in any significant way." -Gozer, Cryptic PvP Dev

I keep seeing this said but it's not a requirement here or in NW. They just make it the default way of downloading a new client, which isn't the ONLY way to get a client. Just the most obvious one.

And Cryptic was doing that under Atari too, working with partner companies who bundled their software with the game client.

If you install off a disc or the right third party site, I don't think there's anything that's indicating that you'll NEED ARC.

And even then if it were required, why panic about ARC? It's a small extra bit of hard disk space. Is PWE less trustworthy than Steam? Why would you think that? If you don't trust PWE with your credit card and analytics data, I'd think you'd be best off not playing STO even without ARC.

Also... I'll give you one reason why I'd doubt they'd go ARC mandatory. They JUST worked out a deal with Steam in the last year or so and I can't see launching ARC from Steam.

I could absolutely see them requiring ARC for new installations of the game downloaded from PWE but that's not the same as it being mandatory for all users since you could always get a disc or use another frontend like Amazon or Steam.

    This is great news! :)

Will be interesting to compare performance between the Mac OS X and Windows clients on my 2009 MacBook Pro 13" (MB991*/A).

How can I collect performance benchmarks for STO and submit them to Cryptic/PWE?

This is awesome news. I hate having to boot my Mac up as a PC as it means I can't use any of my Mac programs.

Branflakes, do you know whether the game will be able to utilise the full capabilities of the higher end Macs such as the twin quad core or the twin hex core Mac Pros, of will it use a set amount, like 2 or 4?

This is awesome news since I'm a Mac user. Once its tested and stable, I will be looking forward to logging on with the Mac. No more hitting restart, then click the PC Windows option. Then wait like 5 minutes to get it on. Now I can just click and go.

This is the best news yet. Specially for use Mac users. Since there is many out there.

You haven't been paying attention. They have said that the current launchers will be phased out leaving ARC the only way to run PWE games.
If you install off a disc or the right third party site, I don't think there's anything that's indicating that you'll NEED ARC.

Not today. In the future there will be.
And even then if it were required, why panic about ARC?

    Who's panicked?
Is PWE less trustworthy than Steam?
Yes. But that's not the point. For one thing, using Arc loses functionality that we have today.
If you don't trust PWE with your credit card and analytics data, I'd think you'd be best off not playing STO even without ARC.
Perhaps we would all be better off not playing STO. Course that'll suck for people who actually want to play the game though. Also for Cryptic people who like being employed.

Not a surprise, but very disappointing. So in other words, Arc will only be mandatory for the people you feel it's worth forcing it upon.

I understand that not many people are happy about ARC, but can that be discussed on the numerous ARC threads that are already out there? I'd love to hear what others are thinking about the new Mac client.

Wooooooooo! Thanks Cryptic! I'll download the beta Mac client and give it a whirl as soon as it's released. I'm looking forward to the day when I can delete my Windows bootcamp partition.

Also, just wanted to say thanks to therealdoh123 for providing the Unofficial Mac version - wouldn't have given STO a go without it.
