I have Nine permanent Alts that I fiddle around with...
But I like making temporary ones every once in a while, just because I find the lower levels of the game to be the most fun.

Honestly, the only reason I don't have more alts (and Mules don't count) is because there aren't any new species.
I have a character for every species I like on the FED, KDF and even ROM side, plus a few canon "aliens" running around too. But you can only make so many character that are basically exactly the same. Running a Human Science officer isn't all that different from Running a human Tactical officer. But running a Trill, makes things interesting.
Add Xindi Primate, Ocampa, Hirogen, and Suliban as a playable race and I would gladly roll them.
I don't think the new rep system will feel as grindy.
Running a single daily will be enough to get the single token needed for the big chunk of XP.
And if I am in the mood I can play repeatable content to grind out smaller chunks of XP to speed thinks up, so it isn't the snorefest of pulling sliders after spending huge sums of EC.
In principle that is the better system, as long as the rep content is halfway worthwhile.
If it's a single boring mission I have to do over and over again, it will of course be less fun.
and if they adopt the same system for the older reps, I will actually continue grinding out the Rom rep at least for my Romulan and maybe even level up my Cardassian engineer in the KDF.
If I have to melee one more drone on Defera or keep one more sphere from regenerating the shield generators I'm going to go batty.
On a somewhat related side note, I came back from a couple months off and deleted all my existing toons including the main I had spent most of a year grinding on. It freshened up the game some for me. I also decided I was only playing for fun in the future. If I don't max out all of the reputations, so be it.
You also had a plan to reduce costs for starbase holdings post LOR.
How exactly did that one go again?
As I recall, the dilithium mine with its cost reductions.
Cost reductions that larger fleets can get faster, meaning small fleets get left even farther behind.
My apologies, I'm being cynical now.

My apologies, I'm being cynical now.
Cost reductions that won't be paid off until the fleet holding *after* the spire. And that's assuming a fleet went back to ground zero and did the mine first before touching the starbase or embassy, and actually get their starbase fully completed.
I have lots of alts, but only a couple are at level 50, and only one character is a fleet member and even that one is no where near maxed out on reputation.
The grind (I don't meant that derogatorily) is too time consuming to even attempt on more than one character. I love this game, but I don't have time to chase down all the avenues of progression that it offers, but I'm okay with that, because it always means that there is something I can be working toward if I so choose. But only on one character.
I've always had alt-itis bad, and STO has just enough variations to indulge it.
Rep isn't my main issue, though I will admit that I have enough trouble scraping up resources to feed my main's rep-and-fleet drain let alone my alts.
The number one thing STO could do to feed my addiction? New game mechanics such as Bridge Officer/Kit abilities. Less focus on equipment.

No point in having loads of characters when I cant use them together in any way. I have the free slots filled because otherwise I would feel like they were going to waste, and honestly playing them one at a time already takes too much time.
Cryptic gave on the lobi crystal stuff - so maybe this will be the next step.
I do feel just a tiny bit bad for Cryptic - damned if they do, damned if they don't....
We have a plan in place to address progressing through reputations with alts. We'll reveal that soon I believe.
Cheers,
Brandon =/\=
Thanks Brandon. I really hope this is a decent and viable solution. I've now completed 11 characters through all existing Reps (yes, that's 33-combined completed T5 Reps!), and I'm about half-way through on two others.
I keep dabbling in the Character Creator, considering making another Alt, but before I actually create the toon I get discouraged thinking about the forthcoming Rep systems that I'll have to grind through.
I know STO's lifeblood is ship sales (either from C-Store or Lockbox), but I haven't purchased one in a long time. I want to support the game, but all my existing toons are pretty happy with their existing ships that I've already spent money on. Give me a reason to make more characters, and I'll have reasons to spend more money.

I just don't alt* much, period. About the only games I've played multiple different characters on are TES3 and 4.
* Can I use "alt" as a verb?
"Great War! / And I cannot take more! / Great tour! / I keep on marching on / I play the great score / There will be no encore / Great War! / The War to End All Wars"

I actually LIKED making ALTs. I played with various Captain professions and ship combinations. HOWEVER I won't build new Rom Alts much as I want to until 2 things are figured out. 1) Tovan out the airlock or at worst option give me a Reman Alternative to him. 2) BOFFs for Roms are better done. More Remans and ideally better mission DOFF occurance so that it doesn't take months to get the BOFF crew that you want.
I've made a lot of ALTS and once the Dil exchange returns to normal levels I intend to get some C/Z and work on alternate ships for my crews besides the Oddy and maybe even some KDF side BUT I will not use any Z (bought or exchanged) on Romulan's until Tovan is out the Airlock without a suit and the Boff situation improves in general I've had more Naus and Gorn BOFFS on my Reman than I have Rom or Reman. Not to mention BUYING them isn't an option because you can't tell what faction they are originally. So I bought a Reman officer of the wrong faction. So no money no ALTS nothing on Roms till fixed so probably never.
Right now I'm playing with an All Andorian crew after watching all seasons of Enterprise. I even hope to get the Andorian Cruisers pack BUT have to admit with all the talk of forced BOFFs and the Rom implementation in general I'm tempted not to spend more money on this. And I've earned 100Vet the hard way AND paid for my Oddys the old fashioned way so have been willing to invest however now I just can't talk myself into it until they show some willingness to look into the factions and that doesn't mean making everyone gimped like the Roms it means making the Romulans a little more like everyone else.
What stops me at the moment is that I have no extra character slots and don't want to buy any more just yet. I do however have 16 characters at the moment with 8 at max-level, one almost there and two at mid-level with the rest at the beginning still.
***Sausages for All*** Federation - Mirel II, Tala Lyleh sh'Ezlem, Vro'kul, Jahrel, Giweatu, Jhrol th'Ezlem, Katariina Rebane, Eleftheria Palaiologou, Surel, Saimon, TheEfficientSaurian KDF -Mirel I, Anirez Norai, Talash Romulans - T'Lara, Makath 'The Needle' Ayailat, Mirel III
I'm genuinely curious what stops other people from making a new alt.
For me it is the reputation system re-grind and the prohibitive cost of skill respecs (500 zen). We know a little about the new proposed system for reputation, but I'm not sure it will go far enough to encourage me to make an alt. As for skill respecs, I think they need to radically change this to make it easier to move from one skill build to another. Either by making it cheaper, or making one activation last 1-4 weeks.
Well, I've done all the PvE on my main, so that's all kinda boring to me. I'd love to level a sci and PvP with it (my main is a tac PvPer), but it's loming 'entry wall' of grinding.

system Lord Baal is dead
The only way you could make alts worth a damn, is if the reputations were account unlocked.
Unlocking the stores and buying gear can still be char bound though, but I believe some even want this to be account unlocked also....
only the fed has max rep in every thing the rom and KDF have nothing

REPUTATION
When Romulans came out, I didn't create my Romulan Captain right away for this reason alone.
Now that I've eventually done so, I'm just getting frustrated at the grind of Reputation.
Granted, I had to take 3 weeks off (I was away from my computer), but it is still taking too long.
Just now, I'm only up to Tier 4.
And it will be another 25 days (roughly) to Tier 5.
And it doesn't end there.
I've got to keep going to get the Tier 5 items I want.
And if you factor in the Optional Objectives for all Borg STFs, that's even more work.
And each new character I create has to do all 3 Reputations to Tier 5, get all the Optionals and then get the T5 gear on top of that.
That's why I refuse to create Alts.
To give you an idea, this is what I do per day (during bonus hour):
1. Vault Ensnared (Romulan).
2. Crystalline Entity (Nukara).
3. Infected Space Elite (Omega).
I'm just growing incredibly bored doing the same 3 things day after day after day.
Bees like honey, they don't like vinegar.
Everytime someone makes a character that is an copy of an existing superhuman, Creativity is sad

-Fleet ship
-fleet gear
-reputation bonuses
-more fleet gear
-accolades (some have minor resistences)
-more fleet gear
-special traits & boffs
-MOAR fleet gear
And that's what I can think of off the top of my head.
