Avenger Class - Worth it?

Augh, this has been gnawing at me all day and I'm still on the fence about it.

Alright, so, we all know the excitement of the Avenger-class being released got to a lot of us. I actually came close to buying one, but stopped at the last moment, getting cold feet. I mean, yes, it's a brand new ship and it looks awesome, especially with its weaponry payload. BUT, I've had my eyes on a few other ships, including the Odyssey Operations (to go with my Tactical for THREE ATTACK SHIPS IN ONE), the Advanced Research Vessel Retrofit and (probably) the Dreadnought. Plus, I just started a KDF toon and I'm loving it so very much (nothing says hilarity than a Gorn so high you can't see his head in cutscenes).

So, would it be worth it to obtain one or should I save my hard-earned Zen for something else?

This is literally the cruiser Feds have wanted for a while. It's a great ship, able to run dual cannons or beams very well. Its relatively quick, isn't squishy, and has 5 fore weapons.

You said something about 3 attack ships in one with your two Oddys. You do know you can't deploy the Aquarius escort and separate at the same time right? And God knows why you would want the Dread, along with the Gal-R its the worst cruiser in the game IMO.

I would defiantly get the Avenger. It's a wonderful ship.

You can't with the Oddy? Oh, that sucks. Bah! I'll just keep my Tac one, then. And frankly, I just like the design of the Dreadnought (I used to have the toy of it when I was younger. It was so awesome)

So, Avenger is worth it, then. Alright, then...!

If you are going to get the Odyssey get all 3 and fly the Tactical one. Generally speaking Tactical Odyssey with Saucer Sep > Avenger but not Fleet Avenger.

    Especially for a Tactical Officer.

Depends on what you already have. The fleet excel and assault are very comparable for beam boats if you already have it. If not then it is as good as anything. I love teh look of it, but dislike many of the features. It is very frustrating to finally see a ship I am very excited to look at but not create a build for.

My hesitation is in how they will allocate the hull slots to battle cruisers if they ever implement that mechanic. There was chatter about it and I could see the BC not getting as much as the full cruiser, but that is pure speculation.

I am also waiting a few weeks to see if VATA or ship stats get nerfed more, and to see if the 4th cruiser command is something i would use that much.

There wasn't 1 ship i bought the first couple months it was on the market though, since there is no refund post nerf i sit on things to make sure it is what i truly want.

Yeah I am not happy with the look personally... the BOFF slots are epic along with the rest of the ship stats. The look... can't we put the Galaxy X skin on it instead?

Once a ship has been launched I don't think there has ever been a "nerf" to stats. There have been some adjustments to the mechanics of special consoles and abilities "not working as intended" but I don't think there has ever been a "nerf" to base ship stats.

In fact there have been buffs to ships - like the HEC or the new Romulan warbird - soon after they were released.

Nerfing a ship after launch would be a disaster for Cryptic - no way would they want to have that hanging over their heads.

I always appreciate it when someone flys what they want because of personal attachment or looks over raw stats :) The Gal-X is a ship I really wish would live up to its Dreadnought title.

Oh, years ago, after TNG ended but before Generations came out. It was an Enterprise that had hidden compartments that you could open up and slide out the pieces to the Galaxy-X. Third nacelle hidden in the hull and the cannons and Phaser Spinal Lance hidden in the saucer.

    This! ^^^

I saw one in Ker'rat last night. Next to my FAHCR, it seemed sort of "puny." I mean, literally "physically" smaller than my Fleet Excelsior Retrofit. And the specs - especially shield mod and hull - aren't anything impressive. I'll be looking for Avengers to hunt in the Fed-on-Fed queues just to see if any of them get the better of me. I'm guessing they won't... ;)

On topic post: I look forward to the day where I have a ship strong enough to take an Avenger in battle, but that may be years from now.

Generally in this game the last ship launched is the most powerful.

I can see valid arguments for this ship as both a Beam boat and a Cannon Cruiser. It's got one of the best BOFF layouts for Cruisers going and 5/3 doesn't matter when your broardsiding.

It really looks (I mean stats) like the Cruiser I want to run, although the Secondry Hull looks much too big.
I was once DKnight1000, apparently I had taken my own name so now I'm DKnight0001.

The Galaxy-X is not a bad ship. The fact is it takes a little more skill to fly effectively than another cruiser. Fly the ship you love first and foremost. I keep my GX loaded out, because I love it. Not because of the stats.

No it isn't worth it. it's ugly, not needed when there is a clamoring for a redo of the gal-R, and too expensive for what it does.

When in the center of a good team, it can actually be a good tool. It reminds me very much of the Stalker in Battletech. It isn't the star of the fight, but steadily advances while hammering away.

The Avenger isn't a substitute for the Explorer, just another type of ship, with its own pros and cons. Its not the "cure-all" for Fed' Cruiser players, nor should it be. The Explorer is the anvil, the Battlecruiser is the hammer.

Honestly, I do not tie the Avenger to the Exploration cruisers in regards to development, we can have both. Fixing what ails cruisers the most (examples: weak engineer boff powers, beam weapons massive drain in numbers especially with rate of fire, etc) will help the Explorer AND be more effective.

Also, using vague statements that do not qualify your points doesn't really explain your thoughts (other than you are Exploration Cruiser-centric only.)

But we have both Sovie and Excel , even queeze in Ambassador for tac orient cruiser captains. In the end this ships is not wanted. What is wanted is a better Galaxy. That has been stated on other thread. But ignored and we get this crappy looking ship that is again TOO expensive for what it does.

Judging from the amount of Avengers I saw in game last night, I would say you are very wrong in judging if people want the Avenger. In the end YOU ( and some others) don't want the Avenger, but a better Exploration Cruiser. Some of us want BOTH. The center of the universe is not the Exploration Cruiser, this isn't a Zero-sum environment, there is room for both.

Man i so agree with this. It takes a little work to make this ship great. I laugh at the post from players that don't get it or are just repeating what they hear others say and never even tried to make her work. Seeing her firing her polaron cannons with retro phasers(Blue Lasers) is beautiful to see. I own just about all the other fed ships and to me its like easy mode with them. This ship is a challenge and a fun one at that. I may not win all the pvp battles but so what. Pve is where this ship shines and its mostly what i do anyways. The new Avenger ship in Pve will be boring and put me to sleep at the keyboard. But i guess if you what easy mode go for it.

If they fixed the lance to actually hit more often, there would be a lot more people using it.

I NEVER saw a clamoring for what Avenger does. Meanwhile Galaxy is ignored. And Again Cryptic should fire their ship design team.

THAT is a matter of opinion. I don't love the design, but I don't hate it either. And it's an extremely fun ship to fly.

Eitherway, the sheer number of players currently using an Avenger class in-game is highly suggestive of a ship that has both sold well and is proving to be very popular.

I have yet to see it. also the same could have been said for Regent and i hardly see that ship anymore. face it the ship is not worth the price.

You never saw it, because you seem to be looking at things in a Zero-sum-game manner. The Avenger is parallel to a great deal of ideas out forth. The Galaxy isn't a good bed for DHC's because of its size (inertia value in this game). The higher turn rate has been asked for a while now.

Pairing the two together on a new platform made the most sense. The Assault Cruiser, Star Cruiser, Dreadnaught, and Exploration cruiser are too large for this and the Advanced Heavy cruiser is fine where its at and didn't need the change.

We can have the Avenger and fix the Exploration cruiser too, they aren't exclusive. It just takes effort by Cryptic to do the fixing that is the problem.

been doing STfs and CE event, hardly see them there. and Avenger. some people are going to be stupid and buy the ship to try it out then in about a month the ship is hardly seen, like the Regent. For both are the same. too expensive for their worth and ugly to boot.
