I don't think refitting this game to the TOS era is feasible.
Are you proposing an area where only T1 ships are allowed?
I was once DKnight1000, apparently I had taken my own name so now I'm DKnight0001. If I ask you a question it is not an insult but a genuine attempt to understand why. When I insult you I won't be discreet about it, I will be precise and to the point stupid.
And some of us are not even sure if it is still 2409. Going from Ensign to Vice Admiral in less than a year seems a tad too fast even for Kirk.
The problem is that we already know the main points of the time between TOS and TNG so adding such an area would extremely limit what Cryptic can do for that zone. Can't have any of the new races so we would be limited to Romulan, Klingon, Gorn, Orion, and a few other races as opponents. This is why STO was set 30 years after Nemesis. Enough time for things to change in the galaxy and isn't limited to what Cryptic can do for storylines. They can introduce whatever ship, technology, planet, or race they want within reason and not have people complaining about the Voth weren't around in the 23rd Century or whatever complaint players can come up with.
I too would like to "live" in the TOS era, fly the older ships... when they were top of the line.
I would pay for more TOS ships, especially if I had somewhere to fly them except for the Enemy Encounters that are -38 skill level.
If there was a zone that would admit only the lower tier ships (to avoid being a hunting ground for people in the higher tier ships) and have missions with the older enemies and challenges.
But you have to ask... how can Cryptic/PWE profit from this? It would have to be popular enough to have enough players that want to come here and want to pay for TOS era stuff. Not everyone identifies with TOS Star Trek series as "their" Star Trek as well.
The closest thing that we can get to this would be just to create Foundry episodes that are TOS-like somehow.

This isn't was STO is about, its about Nemisis +40 year time-frame. If another company wants to get permission from the IP holder to make a 23rd century MMO, that would be fine, but no need to have Cryptic create a pocket-universe to the 23rd century and limit player content.

No, we're not. Sure, cut the Gamma and Delta Quadrant races for being too far away, but there's no reason the known AQ and BQ powers can't be in the game. Kirk, and therefore TOS, mostly stuck to the Romulan and Klingon border regions AFAIK and, for example, the Cardassians are on the complete opposite side of the Federation. Just because we never saw them doesn't mean they're not there.

Even if the Federation knew about Cardassians in the 23rd Century, if no hostile relations existed between Cardassians and the Federation until the 24th Century, then Cardassians can't be considered as a potential enemy for the Federation. So such a zone would be limited to enemies that were seen in TOS and Enterprise as long as the enemy in Enterprise is not an ally in TOS. Also such a zone should be limited to races that should belong there so no Bajorans or Liberated Borg.
^Of course not Liberated Borg, and the Ferengi are out, too, since AFAIK Starfleet didn't meet them until the early- to mid-24th century. The Bajorans are possible but unlikely given that at the time of TOS they only had sublight ships.
Maybe we don't just focus on TOS but also mix in stuff from TAS?

And this is why I don't see them adding a 23rd Century zone to the game. If certain players are not allowed to play this content due to race, then it won't be added or heavily modified so that it ruins immersion. Cryptic and PWE is all about all mission content being playable by everyone and for free.

Starfleet were made aware of the ferengi in the ENT episode 'Aquisition', when a ferengi crew gassed the Enterprise crew and proceeded to rob the ship (without realising Tucker was in a decon chamber, he then - in between flirting with T'Pol - hatched a plan to get them out of it). Starfleet definately knew about them, as Phlox had done medicals on them.
On the topic directly at hand as someone whose favourite series is ENT, I would dearly love to see a game similar to STO which was based in the period between ENT and TOS, but just not this one. Two of my favourite STO 'epsiodes' have been the drozana time travelling one and the celebration mirror Universe one - if they want to do more time or dimension travelling in this sort of way, I say bring it on, but a complete zone limited to t1 ships just doesn't fit with the whole game storyline for me.

Have to agree with this. STO can introduce as many temporal and dimensional missions that they want, but every zone should be accessible by everyone no matter what race or ship they bring. As long as its not bringing a Tuffli or Miranda into a STF.

Except that even the directors had to admit that they fouled up on that just as they did with the D7/K't'inga and the Borg. The Federation didn't know about the Ferengi until the Enterprise-D made contact in the episode "The Last Outpost." Before then, there were only rumors that the Ferengi would eat their business partners.
As to the topic at hand, there is no reason why players could not create Movie era missions via the foundry. Replace all the crusier type ships with T2 Consitutions or T3 Excelsiors. Replace the Frigates with Mirandas and Oberths.
They could at some point start up a TOS/TMP Era Server.
Separate from the main one, running with the same engine, just limited to TOS/TMP era items and ships.
It probably wouldn't be a populated as the current server (though I'd guess it would be pretty close) but would still (IMO) probably be profitable for Them.
It's an idea anyway.

I find it very hard to believe that the TNG era Star Fleet/Federation, didn't have any idea that the Ferengi were out there...
It's far more likely that there had just not been any direct Official contact with them up till Picard's moment.
Seeing how the race was very RETCONNED after "The Last Outpost" episode (mostly by the DS-9 writers), puts TLO into that category of an amusing tale which needs to be taken with a very large grain of salt.
Obviously, there are a few Ferengi out there that don't live by the Rules of Acquisition..
Just like not ALL Klingons, are Warriors.

Keep it completely separate from the current server. Level cap all characters at 20 and only have TOS ships available. They could offer a few more TOS era ship and player equipment, even if it is just taking existing weapons and re-naming them. Content wise would be nowhere near as much as the main server. Perhaps a few story arcs and some STF style missions at the endgame, like a counter offensive against a Klingon fleet or something.

Well, obviously. Just like the Federation is neighbored by far more warlike polities, so is the Ferengi Alliance (the Cardies and the Breen, for starters). Just pointing out the obvious that there is a tier 5 23rd century ship: the excelsior refit. I am currently levelling a toon with this ship and theme in mind (Wrath of Khan uniforms etc), I would love to see more content for this era, but think we would have to do it via the foundry for the moment. Perhaps even founding a fleet dedicated to this style of play.
No offense to TOS fans, or fans of the 23rd Century era of Star Trek, but why would you want a game made out of that?
It seems to me that all that it has to offer is a lot of random encounters with strange people, aliens, or powerful entities who want to kill you, imprison you, use you as toys, or otherwise ruin your whole day. Also, lots of standing around the ship while engineers attempt to fix the warp core again, your medical officer tells everyone about how they're a doctor and nothing else, someone hits on some woman, usually one of the strange beings trying to kill them, and your first officer is almost impossible to work with. Do you have something against the color red? Because nearly everyone who wears it is going to end up dead or worse. But don't worry, by the end of the day, you'll be laughing at something amusing, despite your losses.
I'm just fine sticking to the era of warfare with the Klingons, a rebuilding Romulan Republic, Borg invasion, and the looming threat of the Iconians, all while commanding ships that look and perform so much better than that little Connie and its counterparts from the era. Don't get me wrong, I like the 23rd Century Star Trek, but I like the current one much more.
I don't think 23rd century would really make a good addition. There are some bits and pieces from the era that are good, and we have even now and I think that's enough, Nimbus III content is already great for that! To add to all this - not too long ago there was a vote of which series we would want in the game more, and despite anything people (including me) voted for more Voyager. Now, that is going to be nice to see! Voyager were a great series, I believe TOS was an option, and people didn't pick it, and that's understandable I think, since we are in a completely new era. I don't mind time travel at all though!
Speaking of Ferengi - I think in TNG Picard mentioned that there were rumors about the Ferengi, so the Federation did have some clues I guess. They probably just didn't make an official contact.
No offense to TOS fans, or fans of the 23rd Century era of Star Trek, but why would you want a game made out of that?

Wierd people that imprison to kill Wesley for jumping over the wrong white fence. Kazon, Talaxians, Etc. are so different than the "alien of the week" with no makeup budget. Ferengi Marauders, Jem'Hadar weapons that pop cruisers faster than anything ever shot at Kirk (until they're techobabbled into mediocraty). Q seems to fill in for the Organians / Excalibans / Trelane, Etc...
Also, lots of standing around the ship while engineers attempt to fix the warp core again, your medical officer tells everyone about how they're a doctor and nothing else, someone hits on some woman, usually one of the strange beings trying to kill them, and your first officer is almost impossible to work with.
Vs. the "mandatory" meeting in the conference room where everyone has to contribute their fail plan that gets modified into the successful plan of the week. At least these delays occur in multiple locations (sickbay, engine room, occasionally the briefing room). The weekly "hit on lady" was "pleasantly missed" in TNG, but got brought back full force with Worf - Jadzia and 7 of 9 - though it was the same woman every episode... And remember, Riker used to keep Picard banished to the bridge so he could get all the landing party glory and Chakotay was so full of "your starfleet ways don't work with my crew" for a season or two...
Do you have something against the color red? Because nearly everyone who wears it is going to end up dead or worse.
Yet Scotty, the penultimate Redshirt, survived the whole series without a single bloody nose or black eye. Redshirts + low rank = victim. Seems TNG spent so much money on makeup they couldn't afford to hire the extra to bite it every other episode... :P
I'm just fine sticking to the era of warfare with the Klingons, a rebuilding Romulan Republic, Borg invasion, and the looming threat of the Iconians,
And Kirk fought "augment" Klingons that weren't spouting "for the honor and glory of my house" at every turn, the Romulans, well, the mystery behind them gave them lots of motives, and there were Tholians, Gorn, Orion Pirates, etc. and perhaps the Kelvans from Andromeda galaxy would have been the "big threat"...
all while commanding ships that look and perform so much better than that little Connie and its counterparts from the era.
Personal matter of taste. Ever since they "squished" the saucers with the Excelsior, I've been gagging at almost every ship they've designed. There's something about the flat plane to "rising bubbles" on the Connie / Miranda has that gives them that "starship" feel, and don't get me started on the "streamline pointed arrows" of the Intrepid / Soverign / etc...
Don't get me wrong, I like the 23rd Century Star Trek, but I like the current one much more.
I will not argue this point. I appreciate a good chunk of TNG-era Trek, but have a soft spot for what I grew up on. Many others in this thread are of the same viewpoint. Many of us ask for (at least a couple) opportunities to enjoy "our" favorite Trek in STO like all you TNG-era fans can enjoy "your" Trek...
Detecting big-time "anti-old-school" bias here. NX? Lobi. TOS/TMP Connie? Super-promotion-box. (aka the two hardest ways to get ships) Excelsior & all 3 TNG "big hero" ships? C-Store. Please Equalize...

The most obvious reason that 23rd Century Starfleet knew that Ferengi exist is the Roswell episode. It is possible that not every Starfleet Captain in the 23rd Century knew about Ferengi, but the higher ups should know who their first unofficial first contacts were.

One of my favourite episodes. But look at it like this, a government 300 years ago who covered up a meeting with an Alien race and are now completely defunct in the time period pretty much means nobody even bothered to look into the reports so I doubt any Starfleet Personel of Archers time knew about the Ferengi.
By that logic, Starfleet knew Voyager was getting stuck in the Delta Quadrant on her first voyage.
It was an episode that seemed like a good idea on paper but contradicted previously recorded episodes in practice.

Perhaps even founding a fleet dedicated to this style of play.
Speaking of Ferengi - I think in TNG Picard mentioned that there were rumors about the Ferengi, so the Federation did have some clues I guess. They probably just didn't make an official contact.

Vs. the "mandatory" meeting in the conference room where everyone has to contribute their fail plan that gets modified into the successful plan of the week.
Yet Scotty, the penultimate Redshirt, survived the whole series without a single bloody nose or black eye. Redshirts + low rank = victim. Seems TNG spent so much money on makeup they couldn't afford to hire the extra to bite it every other episode... :P
No comment...
To rob a line: [quote: Mariemaia Kushrenada] Forum Posting is much like an endless waltz. The three beats of war, peace and revolution continue on forever. However, opinions will change upon the reading of my post.[/quote]
If I remember right, T'Pol spoke of them as if she was aware of the Ferengi.
And as previously mentioned even the production team admitted they ****ed up in making that episode, so ignore it. It never happened.

Okay, here's a transcript of the episode.
Try to find the word "Ferengi" only once.:)

If I ask you a question it is not an insult but a genuine attempt to understand why.
When I insult you I won't be discreet about it, I will be precise and to the point stupid.
