Hi Captains,

It is with great sadness that I let you know that one of our colleagues and friends, Mark "H20rat" Valentine, passed away this past weekend after one year of battling cancer. Mark was an incredible artist who led our video team here at PWE/ Cryptic for many years, and produced some of our most amazing videos and trailers, including the famous STO Free-to-Play Launch Trailer and dozens more. Mark was also a very dedicated member of the STO community and played daily -- he loved to run STFs and hangout with the community in-game and during podcast tapings. He also has a featured spotlight mission in-game, "The Rising Phoenix - Part One", which was put up earlier this year.

Mark will be missed, but his legacy will live on forever. We'll see you among the stars, Mark.

Rest in peace,

Brandon =/\=

Mark was probably the most upbeat, passionate, funny, and dedicated people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing, let alone working with. Cryptic will miss him dearly.

I was very sad to hear about Mark's passing. He was a talented artist, a good friend to the community and a fellow Foundry author. He'll be missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends. :(

    RIP Mr. Valentine.

The Free to Play trailer is still my inspiration when I am feeling down. In interviews and in the forums, you always presented yourself as a person I would like to have called a friend. May we met someday beyond the stars.

 I knew the name sounded familiar when Nick posted it on twitter but could not place it at the time. Sorry to hear of his passing, his humor and video craftsmanship will be missed.

He was such a great guy too! I loved his mission and was looking forward to the next part and anything else he did around Cryptic!

R.I.P. Mark, your mission will always hold a special place on our ranking list (as it will be our next review - and a tribute will be payed to him on Foundry Files as well in honour of such a guy)

I've written up a few thoughts about h20rat on podcastugc.com.

To summarize, though, this hit me like a brick. I had plans to play Torchlight 2 with him soon ... he'd bought me a copy on Steam. The fact that he is gone has me thinking about ... pretty much all the things I DIDN'T do. Didn't say. All the games we didn't play.

I'm just at a loss. I don't know what to do. This just wasn't supposed to happen and although I'm crying right now, there's a surrealness to this that I can't get past. I'm staring at his picture on Skype. His last status update is that he's away from keyboard. I am waiting for him to log in, as if this has all been a mistake of some kind. But I know it's not.

It's wrong. Everything about it is just wrong.

I don't think I ever met him, but I guess this explains why the forum feels a bit empty... He sounds like he would've been very fun to hang out with. My condolences to everyone who knew him well... :(

If I could, I'd design a starship class and name it after him.

    Nerf is OP, plz nerf
That's quite the paradox, how could you nerf nerf when the nerf is nerfed. But how would the nerf be nerfed when the nerf is nerfed? This allows the nerf not to be nerfed since the nerf is nerfed? But if the nerf isn't nerfed, it could still nerf nerfs. But as soon as the nerf is nerfed, the nerf power is lost. So paradoxally it the nerf nerf lost its nerf, while it's still nerfed, which cannot be because the nerf was unable to nerf.

I call it, the Stoutes paradox.

I recently had a family member pass on because of cancer, so I feel for you even more. It always sucks when one of our community passes on, but the work he has already put in to STO will not be forgotten.

Rest in peace. Enjoy your shore leave :)
