I've stolen some from other fiction, like the "Midian Breach" or "Sevenfold Path" from Andomeda, the "Nervous Energy" from the "Culture" novel series, and some I just made from the character idea "U.S.S. Daddy Issues" or "Angry Science," and some from other sources like the "U.S.S. Thursday's Child" (from the old children's song about days of the week - "Thursday's child has far to go...") or the Danube runabout "Small Packages."

Mind you, I'm only really posting to complain about how short the field is for ship names. Almost every idea I have for a ship name is too long, I always have to settle on my second or third choice.

I like ship names like "Don't Make Me Come Over There" and "The Continuation of Diplomacy" and "Through the Looking Glass."

I know it's not very Canon, but I don't really like short ship names much. Also the struggle for a name every time I make a new one.

Both Klingon and Fed side, my ships are named after Magic sets with the release date as the registry, i.e. USS Tempest NCC-91997 or IKS Torment.

    Al Rivera hates Klingons

    The U.S.S. Prometheus...Reporting for duty!

When I saw the movie Prometheus, I said "I have to name my starship that", and its a tittle name that just sounds right for everything.

"This is Admiral BumBleBush!..Captain of the U.S.S. Prometheus!..I order you to lower your shields and weapons or ill be forced to fire upon you!!!"

I decided fairly early on that I needed some (semi-)sensible naming schemes for my ships.

So, I hit on the idea of using the names of pieces by some of my favourite composers. My Andorian engineer has ships named after the more obscure works of Gustav Holst; for my Vulcan science officer, I moved on to Sibelius. So, should you see an Andorian in the USS King Estmere, or a Vulcan in the USS Tapiola, that might be why.

For my human/lib-borg tac officer, I'm sort of alternating between names of hunting birds and names of angelic orders. There is a reason for this, but it's far too long and silly to go into here. Right now, you are most likely to see her flying the USS Virtue.

And, for my Romulan, I went off on another tangent and started naming the ships after female characters in Robert Graves's I, Claudius. Fortunately, it's a book with a lot of memorable female characters. At the moment, my Rom is tooling around in the RRW Messalina... one of the more memorable ones, I think.

I'm reasonably happy with this system. I do wish, though, that we were allowed a few more characters for the names! It'd be nice for my Andorian to be able to fly the Wandering Scholar or the Somerset Rhapsody. Putting my Vulcan in the USS Breaking of Ice on the Oulu River, now, I admit that would be a bit much...

For my first-ever STO toon, a Federation science alien, I named my ships after counties in my state.

USS Franklin, a faked Soyuz-class ship cobbled together out of Miranda and Sha'Kir parts
USS York, a TOS Constitution-class ship
    USS Kennebec, a T2 Excalibur-class ship
    USS Knox, a T3 Akira-class
    USS Piscataquis, a T4 Intrepid-class
    USS Androscoggin, a T5 Luna-class
    USS Penobscot, a T5.5 Excelsior-class
    USS Oxford, a T5.5 Armitage-class

I broke the nomenclature when I finally won my first (and only) lock-box ship, the USS Epoch, a Wells-Class temporal science ship

After a few more alts, I grew tired of naming ships. SOP became
    USS Primus
    USS Secundus
    USS Tertius
and so on, only bothering to give real names to her ships once she started using T5s.

My shiny new Romulan is tooling around in a Daeinos Heavy Destroyer christened "Yar's Revenge."
    Don't phaze me, bro!

I decided to post for the first time in this thread because that's how much of a nerd I am.

For Vice Admiral Valin of Starfleet, Engineer:
USS Petra (Miranda-class) - after the ancient city in Jordan, because it's cool
USS Roland (Constitution-class) - after the legendary French paladin and Roland Deschain of Gilead
USS Durandal (Cheyenne-class) - after the paladin Roland's sword
USS Nagato (Galaxy-class) - after the Japanese battleship, and yes, after Yuki Nagato
USS Soyokaze (Sovereign-class) - "Gentle Breeze," after the main ship in Irresponsible Captain Tylor
USS Temeraire (Odyssey-class) - after the various ships of the French and British navies, and of course the dragon
USS Anduin (Danube-class runabout) - after the fictional Great River of Middle-earth
USS Ohio (Yellowstone-class runabout) - after the river

For Vice Admiral Nella Klow of Starfleet, Science Officer:
USS Tyson (Miranda-class) - after Neil deGrasse Tyson
USS Carl Sagan (Nova-class) - after... well, yeah
USS Ra-ghoratreii (Ambassador-class) - after the UFP president seen in STVI, named in the novelization
USS Lucretius (Intrepid-class) - After the Roman author of De rerum natura, who got more things right than you might think
USS Hyperion (Luna-class) - After Saturn's oddly-shaped moon, since it's the theme of the Luna class
USS Wolf Run (Yellowstone-class runabout) - after a creek

I can't remember all the ship names for my Nausicaan tactical officer Durin or my Romulan engineer Valeria, but their current ships are the IKS Black Ice (Breen Chel Grett cruiser) and the RRW S'task (Ha'apax warbird, after the first leader of the Romulans.) Durin's new fighter is IKS bIj ("punishment," specifically pain inflicted as a test of a warrior's mettle.)

Not the most creative guy. All my fed ships from my single fed toon since the day the game went live are called USS EXO Why? What? From the EXO squad cartoon. Also BTW my 25 BO's "Yes I have 25;)" are also named after every name that appeared on the show. Am I crazy about that show? I have not seen it in years but in HS & College I loved it. Had to go to Exo Squad wiki to get names;)

    Shuttlecraft:
Admirals Pride "Runabout also the first small craft I bought and favorite"
    Admirals Strike "Peregrine Fighter"
Admirals Night "Class F old school shuttle"
    Admirals Carriage "TNG Shuttle"
    Admirals Sight "Type 10 Shuttlecraft"
    Admirals Star "Delta Flyer"

Most of my ship names reflect my sense of humor, which is questionable. Here are few examples:

    Current Main Tac:
U.S.S. Self Destruct-C - Is there any question as to why there were 4 others?

    Engineer:
U.S.S Bigger Boat - Fits a huge Dreadnaught. "I think we need a bigger boat"

    SCI:
U.S.S Useless - Just seemed to fit.

    Romulan Tac:
    U.S.S. Space Elf - It's what she is. :)

Peaceful exploration? I have a heavily armed ship and a phaser with a kill setting, how peaceful is that?

My Tactical Caitian's ship is named U.S.S. Sheikra. Named after an African Bird that dives straight down to catch its prey at lightning speeds.

My Ferasan's ship is named the I.K.S Wakati. That's Swahili for time. Makes sense with it being a temporal ship.

And my Reman's ship is named the R.R.W Kivuli. It means shadow in Swahili. I think that matches since Remans are all about the stealth and shadow agent stuff.
