From being able to play again for 15 minutes before bed after doing said procedure about 10 hours or so ago. Now I'm unable to connect to the account server.
YAY!!! An other patch and you managed to frak up my game to the point that it refuses to launch again. Seriously. How do you manage to do this after each and every patch lately?
Do you think it is normal to have to download the game again and again after each patch you release?
I haven't had any issues with STO where I had to re-install the game ever. Do you have any potentially useful information, so maybe people could try to figure out why you need to re-install so much?
Sure. It's the same type of problem each time. The error code changes though. But the behavior is the same.
Error 36: A file was locked that could not be open for writing. Restart in 1.
Although that 1, is not 1, it is one tenth of a second so it's almost impossible to see these error codes as they flash back to Connecting ...
I didn't use to have this problem but since the first patch after Romulan content, it's been the same after each patch. And frankly I'm getting sick and tired of having to install the game after each darn patch.

I haven't that issue, however try making a second copy of your folder (after a working install) so when you need to reinstall you can try instead to copy from your second copy. It's not the solution, but I hope it help you.

Playing STO spamming FAW is like playing chess using always the computer's suggested moves

Thanks I guess that is the only quick solution.
But I'm afraid that it will not do any good.
Because the game breaks when trying to patch it.
So if I copy an old installation over the one with the problem it would want to install the patch and I would be back to square one again.
Are you installing/playing as administrator of your computer ? If you're playing without admin rights the patcher may not be able to update files. Also try renaming the entire STO folder (to lock that drivesspace from being used) and reinstall again- maybe you've got some failing sectors where the game is installing.
heh- I would disable your AV software when installing/playing as well. ONLY have it running when your surfing with your browser.
So I thought I had a solution. I deleted the game, installed it again and when it was patched and the Engage button lit up I closed the Launcher so make a copy of the game before I went in to the game and it got corrupted.
Can you guess what happened after I had made a copy of the Live folder?
Same TRIBBLE as before. Stuck on patching with Error 36. AGAIN
Without me even going in to the game this time. It clearly worked just after I installed it or the Engage button wouldn't have showed up.
Is anyone at CS or Cryptic even going to look in to this?

Yes, I'm running it as an admin. If I had a problem with failing sectors wouldn't that result in the game not being able to launch directly after a fresh install? As I imagine files don't start jumping around on the HDD while playing. Especially when I've not even started the game. Only the launcher.

Sometimes if a sector is failing it could lose data if it didn't get refreshed in a certain amount of time. I've never had the error you have but I would think a locked file error is either a corrupted TOC entry or something else that's locking it after it's created. If the patcher is unable to update it because it's locked it could be many things but a permission error or other outside program is locking it.
Do you know the name of the file ? Look at it's properties and see if it's actually locked, and who the owner is.
Error 36 does happen even to me from time to time (And a search of the forums would also show you it has occurred to others)
Two ways to clear this that I can remember off hand you can try both methods -
1) There should be a .deleteme file in your Star Trek Online folder go ahead and delete that and try again.
2) Delete GameClient.exe - at the very least you will only have to repatch that each time.
Also moving this to PC issues as it's not a gameplay bug.

I didn't know STO creates one like most other games, it WILL rebuild the file on launch.
The only way i remembered about it is i was looking in my CS folder and saw the neverwinter.exe.deleteme file and it just snapped that i used to have that problem and deleting it did help.
I think it did anyways.

Congrats cryptic for the new virus and malware that came in the launcher as i now cannot play anny steam game period as my account is corrupt and untreiveable congrats crytic n pwe
Deleting GameClient.exe doesn't solve the problem.
The error log keeps showing different files each time when I delete the one listed in the previous error log
First it complained about
d3dx11_42.dll
Then when I deleted that one it complained about this one
D3DX9_37.dll
And every time I delete that one and run the launcher it comes back.
Then the dbghelp.dll had an error so I deleted that one too.
And every time I delete that one and run the launcher it comes back as well.
Next file to end up in the error log was nvtt.dll so I deleted that one too.
And every time I delete that one and run the launcher it comes back as well.
After that I didn't get any other error logs added to the file even though the same error persisted. So I deleted all the .dll files
Somehow that did the trick. I guess I have to do trial and error by removing one file at a time until it works.
Honestly you shouldn't be deleting the directX files hehe. But hey if it worked then woo hoo!

Don't ask me how or why, but the launcher seems to be working now. Out of nowhere.
I haven't installed or deleted any programs not changed any settings in the firewall and anti-virus software. Nothing other then deleting all the .dll-files in the Live folder.
I reserve the right to come back to this topic after the next patch they upload to the game.
I risk to lose the Risian Corvette after logging in each day...
And their behaviour in regard of their customers is a shame.
They have to speak about the issue:
are you aware of it? are you working on it? are you about to solve it or you don't know where to begin?
They have to tell us about the remedy to any relevant consequence.
There IS a time-limited prize out there, one of only 2 a year.
Are you going to extend the period, the same amount of days the game is broken before complete fixing?
Or giving it for free to those who collected enough pearls minus the days when the game was broken?
.........not even a single word.
I still dream from time to time about using the Gateway to doff off-game in spare minutes as we were told

This issue in particular has been resolved by the player by doing some trial and error fixes.
If you're having the same issue you need to be more specific as no one knows what issue you're talking about. Also realize this is a PEER TO PEER support area. If you want technical support from a PWE person, you will need to visit http://techsupport.perfectworld.com

Yeah but now the launcher closes in a few seconds after the engage button is lit making me have to click it like crazy holing the click will take and it will launch the game before the launcher shuts down. And it's not becoming unresponsive. The process is terminated. This brings back not so sweet memories of closed beta.
Oh and a friend of mine have had the same problem like I've had initially reported.
So there is seriously something going on when it isn't an isolated incident.
Great work guys. Now my launcher will not start because when it tries to patch it claims a file is locked and aborts the patching of the launcher. One step forward and two steps back.

Ive seen issues with other games where the AV was the root cause of problems.
Playing STO spamming FAW is like playing chess using always the computer's suggested moves
Even though I don't like making exceptions for programs in my firewall/antivirus settings, I have done so with this game a long time ago.
Thanks I guess that is the only quick solution.

I deleted the game. Installed it. Got in and played a little. Had to go to the store so I closed the game and now the darn Error 36 is back.
I had copied everything in the STO folder to a separate HDD after I logged out but when I used those files the Error 36 still remained.
So clearly something happened to the game after I logged in and before I closed the game, or maybe when I closed it. I don't know.
What should I do. It clearly isn't my firewall/antivirus, or I wouldn't be able to play at all.
