I just yesterday learned that there was the option of accessing the ingame chat via the XMPP protocol. I subscribed as gold member and logged in my char on tribble to meet the requirements, but pidgin (my XMPP client) claims "Not Authorized" when i try to login.
Did i do something wrong there, is my username supposed to be something else? Or could it be that there's a delay before it works after subscribing as gold member?
I have to use my email-adress as username, but XMPP doesnt allow @-characters in the username part, and thu Pidgin and other standard-compliant clients complain when you try to enter a username accordingly.
I found one client on android that allows @ characters in the username, and i can login with that.
Using \40 instead of @ doesnt work either.
Well, f-ing great!
I guess theres no chance of getting an @-less usernamen??
Since May 2010,[3] the use of XMPP chat made it possible to chat to users in global channels (but not local or zone) or to send private messages to users on your friends list. This can be set up on a chat client program, such as Pidgin with the following directions taken:
Start the Pidgin client
Click on Accounts > Manage Accounts
Click the Add... button
On the Add Account dialog fill out the following:
Protocol: XMPP
Username: <Account Name> (the login name used for Holodeck/Live server)
Domain: CrypticSpace.com
Resource: <Anything> Name appearing in front of @handle, when chatting from Pidgin
Password: <Your Account Password>
Remember Password: <Check mark> (if desired)

Well, as i said, i did figure that out - i just didnt think it was the email adress at first, since that breaks XMPP compliance....
I suppose its because i registered just this year and got a PWE account, that i got the @ in my username.
Unfortunately the STO XMPP Server doesnt know how to handle the XMPP compliant escaping for special characters, (which would be the aforementioned \40 for an @ ), and thus, i cant use this service.
I have another idea - sometimes when my game DC's, instead of my saved email adress, theres a long number with a # in the "username" box ingame, and since i can use that to login to the game, it might work to use that to connect to the XMPP server.
Unfortunately i'm not getting that number after a forced disconnect.... Oh well. Maybe i'll open a support ticket.
I need help with this as well. I'm a lifetimer so I'm gold, and I've tried everything from my @handle, my email with both the @ and \40, I've got tribble access etc, but all I ever get is a "Not Authorized" message.

It's not your @handle or email address. It is your ACCOUNT name which is what you use to log in to games, the forums etc. (example - while it says askray on my post and my @handle is something else, my account name is far far different).

How would I go about setting that, because I've been logging in since PWE moved in with my email address and I'm unfamiliar with any other handle.
Is "not allowed" the same error? I have that issue on almost all channels. The common link on the ones showing it is they have a space in their name (for example: tribble testers).
Thanks for the report, entnx01. We've identified an issue where players are having trouble connecting to channels via XMPP that have a space in the name (e.g. tribble testers; Brandon is cool). The team is working on a resolution.

Yup, just logged in today and was wondering why one channel worked, and another gives an error 'Not Allowed' in Pidgin,
Thanks for looking into it I was worried the channel got abandoned!!!
didn't change anything in the client since i've set it up over a year ago
usually if a channel name had a space in it you instead typed a + and it worked

Yeah, confirmed what Brandon was saying: any channel with a space in the name (indicated by the +) can't be connected to with external XMPP clients. Just gotta wait for the fix, I guess.

I had the same problem. the \20 workaround helped. Thanks. I tried to join the channel "Brandon is cool" to test. There was no such channel. Well, there is now...

HAHA! I am so joining it when I get in-game later.

Thank you for this wonderful suggestion! I've been trying to figure out how to get access to the XMPP gateway for some time, but had the same problem you had (email address as login).
I chose "Logout" from the game menu, copied the username string from the resulting login screen into the XMPP info, and it works!

Sweet! Thanks I'll try it when I get home tonight
EDIT: The \20 I mean , not the "Brandon" channel...sorry Brandon...not enough chat windows :P lol

The username it is looking for is the username you log into STO with and not your @handle address.

i am getting this since the downtime yesterday

Replace + sign with \20
So random example channel name is Hot Dogs
Type in Hot\20Dogs
Simple as that.
