My guess on the "No swimwear" issue

tk79tk79 Member Posts: 1,020 Arc User
There are bare torso options for males and females that are human-skinned (Orions for example). Gorn also has a bare chest option.

There are no bare torsos for male pakleds, caitians, ferengi(?), saurian, tellarite, etc; basically anything non-human like. Females get it at some extent since some clothing options are sleeveless and show midriff sections making it easier to develop swimwear for them. (Or not.) The same would apply to bare legs for males (only human ones are known).

So my guess is that the devs didn't have the resources to give every race bare torsos and legs to make them swimwear-able.

This game costumes are not layered over a bare body like other modern games. When you pick between different shirts for example, the whole torso piece is replaced. There are exceptions to this but it still applies to the issues at hand.

If this is really the case, hopefully it will shed some light into the minds of people wondering why swimwear is not available.

(We're still counting on that "At this time" part though; so devs, please make it happen! eventually!)

We already have topless dudes walking around, Couldn't they just use the human torso with a different colour pallet?

Nah, if they did that people would complain that 'X Species has chest ridges' or 'Species B has this' or whatever.

I'm pretty sure a Caitian with a Human bare torso running around would disagree with you. :P

Entirely different people work on costumes than those that work upon maps.

I feel overdressed. The fact that I'm jealous of what the npcs have is not helpful.

And time to make new bikinis for the npcs.

well, all those in swimwear are humans, or aliens with a small difference, vulcans, bajorans, etc. And they've all pretty much the same body type, a lot easier to slap a bathing suit on a base body type than make it scalable, it would be a clipping nightmare unless they put a lot of time and effort into it. Which I don't think they had the time or resources to do.

You never know, they may be working on them right now for a sneaky update halfway through for the C-store or another vendor item, or we may see them next year.

The physics were already present in the engine. The jet pack flight is almost identical to jet packs in Champions Online, another Cryptic game that uses the exact same engine. Only the floater device model and jet flames (which reflect nicely over the shiny texture of the 7 of 9 costume, especially at night) are new.

I believe some of the devs are on record as saying that swimwear costumes could be considered a bridge too far in terms of immersion-breaking, and that they were reluctant to go down that road. CBS might not approve, either.
You're right. The work here is very important.

Why not restrict the outfits to certain locations? Or, maybe if someone is wearing it on ESD, then players see them in a redshirt.

Because this isn't City of Heroes where people can run around in their underwear. :D

It's a bit of a downer that there are a BUNCH of NPC's running around with bathingsuits and swim trunks.

But it can't be applied to the player models, I'm just curious as to why?

I have both mirror Ent and TOS uniforms. The option for female toons is bare midriffs and very short skirts, these are the closest summer options you can get unless you roll an Orion Slave Girl.

lol. So my Starfleet Captain can fly around in a Jem'Hadar Battleship full of Borg equipment, with Breen and Romulan Bridge officers, but a pair of swim trunks would be immersion breaking?

STO crossed that 'bridge too far' a long, long time ago.

FOrgot about the mirror uniforms for fed side.

Yeah, my Orion is in her "native" gear on a lounge chair right now.

It might have something to do either with "concerned parents" or game politics (Jack Thompson and GTA, remember?)

..or Cryptic simply doesn't want people running around in ESD/QnoS/New Romulus in swimwears

They stated a long time ago they would not release bathing suit options b/c they didn't want folks running around Sol in a Bikini. I wish they would change their minds, but they haven't so far.

I would not so much mind the lack of swimsuit, because I can understand why they made that decision.

But why enforce the 'off-duty' clothing?

http://geekparty.com/legacy-of-romulus-more-like-legacy-of-outfitus/ They don't have to. The code exists. They just won't implement it playside.
http://geekparty.com/an-open-letter-to-cryptic-studios/ My latest STO article, about the Summer Event. Where I admit that really...it's mostly about the outfits.

    Okay...

This may confound a lot of folks but why not add bare chests as a human only cosmetic option as it is for Orions? Maybe do the same for Romulans and Vulcans.

Then all factions have a species that can go shirtless. Maybe look at extending it to Klingons, Remans, and Caitians/Ferasans down the road.

Then it becomes an incentive rather than something they have to do for all aliens and species.

I agree. Still not a permanent fix, but still would have been a nicer option than none at all.

Honestly though, if they weren't going to give us swimwear, they should have waited till next year. :(

Plenty of time, Beachwear was asked for before game went to launch lol.

no reason has been given, but lots of speculation and funny comments.

This. I reached the point where I don't care anymore, for all I care they could buy the SW license from Disney and put Star Destroyers in there. STO is broken in that regard. It doesn't care. It doesn't want. It's just a mildly trek-themed "Second Live" with shooting.

A vulcan nipple cannon? Sounds... eww...

For it to be considered a "mistake", that implies the writer intended to get it correct in the first place, and, as we all well know, the vast majority just don't have enough self-pride to want to be seen as anything more than mediocre.

IIRC the first costume slot must be an actual duty uniform, so they could code into spacedocks that you can only use duty costumes, with it defaulting to the first slot if you're in something off-duty. Problem solved, everyone gets what they want.
