Launcher Crashing

redheaven83redheaven83 Member Posts: 0 Arc User
I've attempted to find out the problem to this issue, but cannot thus far.

My patcher is crashing right on startup. I click the .exe and the window opens, blank, white, and crashing immediately. I cannot even input my name or password.

These are my system specs.

    Sorry buddy.

No one in their right mind is EVER, EVER, EVER going to pick apart this total trash...

try and be more vague (what is the actual error msg)

They don't need to pick it apart. It's a dxdiag text that gives system specs.

They're commonly seen on troubleshooting forums.

Again, I don't get an error, so I'll be more specific.

I click the STO icon, running it as admin and in compatibility mode.

The launcher window pops up and immediately crashes, not even loading the text boxes, textures, or other relevant items you usually see in a launcher window.

System hangs, and hangs, and hangs, and it is listed as 'not responding'.

"Oops!" Cryptic crash report pops up. The error ID is: "Unknown"

Both 'whited out' crashed launcher window and error report systematically close.

I did look in the 'logs' file and found this:

    130528 04:44:47 1 Client[0 [NOENT]]: GSM_Quit(). Reason: emEditorMain or utilitiesLibShouldQuit()
    130528 11:51:52 1 Client[0 [NOENT]]: GSM_Quit(). Reason: emEditorMain or utilitiesLibShouldQuit()

But using it to search for a solution didn't help. I saw people claiming a third party program was causing it, but I do not have the third party program.

STO's launcher and the client itself are on the firewall exemptions. I shut down the avast shields and attempted to launch, and even created an exemption for it. Still the same crash.

Picking apart was a bad choice of words.... I am sorry for that..

However, all of your hardware and softwar3 would typically work as far as I can see..

The issue I have is a network issue, and that's most likely what you have as well. not saying your network is bad but I believe Cryptic is having a lot of issues.....

I'm not even sure it's a network issue to be entirely honest.

There is something wrong going on between Windows 7 and the STO launcher, but I can't put my finger on what it is. Most people seem to be able to get the launcher to pop up at all. Everything I've read seems to indicate people can definitely put their name and password at least.

I can't even do that. It literally crashes right when the little window's borders show up. I can see the STO Icon in the title bar, and the border, but everything else is white. The program seems to know that it has crashed, but without a crash report number I can't even begin to start trying to fix this.

I've played this game since early access and have a life-time sub, and have put in a lot of hours. This seems to compound the issue further, as it is a more recent problem. Posting on these forums usually is the last thing I do because I generally figure out how to fix the problem in the first place on my own.

After a few weeks of nothing, I'm here. I'm hoping an admin can at least take a look at this scenario and give me some input or advanced assistance. Or someone, anyone. I seem to be the only person with this issue.

Try to update (or reinstall) the microsoft internet explorer. After some win7 updates some days ago my IE was kinda busted, and the launcher of STO need a functional IE to run. Just figured that out when I was trying to play another Online Game which needed the IE for the launcher as well.

Unfortunately installing the newest Explorer did nothing, thanks for the suggestion.

I saw other complains on the Steam forum, but no solutions to be found.

Steam forums have turned up absolutely nothing. I'm not even sure this is going to bump properly.

Three months later I assume this still hasn't been resolved? I've searched the whole forum for a solution to no avail.

Sadly, with the same error, I am not using Steam. Nor do I have any software that is known to conflict with the launcher.

I've followed your instructions to the letter(I never thought about disabling all the services on startup honestly, I was just cancelling them out as I went trying to find one that conflicted) but sadly it had no effect.

I'm not sure if dumping my system specs from dxdiag would help in this case. Hmmm...I may just install it on one of the other computers I have, though the graphics will probably kill it.

    Until then, any suggestions?

Alright, it seems you're running Win7 Ultimate.

If you have installed STO with standard options, your directory must be:
    C:\Users\Public\Games\Cryptic Studios\Star Trek Online\Live\

When you're there, open "GameClient.exe". This way you'll be bypassing the launcher. Now try and open the game, it might either say that:

    1) You can't connect (bad)
    2) You must update your STO (good)

If you got 1, that means your game is unable to contact the servers due to couple blocked ports. Which ones? I don't know.

What helped for me was reverting back to IE9.

    Nerf is OP, plz nerf
That's quite the paradox, how could you nerf nerf when the nerf is nerfed. But how would the nerf be nerfed when the nerf is nerfed? This allows the nerf not to be nerfed since the nerf is nerfed? But if the nerf isn't nerfed, it could still nerf nerfs. But as soon as the nerf is nerfed, the nerf power is lost. So paradoxally it the nerf nerf lost its nerf, while it's still nerfed, which cannot be because the nerf was unable to nerf.

I call it, the Stoutes paradox.

stoutes, thanks for the advice, it works now, beautifully.

I suggest that this gets saved somewhere since I've seen people looking for a solution to this problem. IE10 has issues.

 Time to fly around in my little ship.
