I just wanted to comment that the T'Varo retrofit with a science captain is more fun than should be allowed.
I know that some (myself included) have stuck with plasma torps since launch, just for the fun factor. It was worth the wait. Fly this ship as if you're in a knife fight, stick close, weave, and let loose high yield torps at near point-blank range. The unstable plasma torp (from the console) is insane as well, and just icing on the cake.
Just be sure to have Hazard Emitters as one of your science skills, for the backblasts.
hehhe sweet....:D the thing i love about the T'varo retro is that lt comm uni slot meaning it can technically be used by any carrer
I use that one for Sci, that way you can have Polarize Hull 1 (for breaking tractors), Sci Team 1, Hazard Emitters 2, Transfer Shield Strength 2, and Photonic Officer 2 (to reset all of the above).
the ship, while having a slight tac focus with boff seating is balanced with the console with a 3/3/3...but becaues it has a Lt. Commander Universal Boff slot its viable for all 3 carrers...and its pretty good for a sci toon lol.
I'm curious why you went with a science character with that particular ship. I'm only curious, because it seems like it's ideal for a tac character.
Sensor Scan is great for point-blank, high yield, plasma torpedo hits. You can get some insane damage.
Also, Sensor Scan Subnucleonic Beam, and Photonic Fleet can all be used while cloaked in this ship, along with firing regular, high yield, and spread torpedo shots under cloak.

Yep, it's insane. Over 85% chance of it just sitting there rather than moving toward a target. Is it a torp? Is it a mine? It's insane...it doesn't know.

Maybe it's an intelligent weapon, like the one from a Voy episode. Suddenly the torp reach sentience, and start thinking. Maybe she don't want to hurt anyone anymore. Or throw her life needlessly.
It may do the same thing high yield plasmas do, if you "miss" the target, they just sort of sit there.
When was the last time you had a THY Plasma sit there though?
No doubt it's along the same lines as what happened with THY Plasma and more recently (even this was forever ago) with THY Omega...so it will likely get fixed.
Does lead to all sorts of nifty and fun ways of trying to get it there - even if it means getting the target there instead of the Mega Torp, lol.
I had some high yield plasmas just sit and crackle in space last evening. Although I believe they were tracking targets that were destroyed before the torp got to them.
Maybe that's what's happening with the giant red torp of doom, the thing does move even slower than regular high yield plasmas.
Just a thought.

Totally been getting this bug too. It's strong, but extremely unreliable on top of being slow.
I'm pretty sure it's not just a matter of it stopping to move because its target was destroyed. I tos it out at Borg cubes and suddenly it just stalls and hangs there! >_<
Also, when it does connect, it hurts when you're too close. Ow. Though I get the impression my allies (in STFs) are unaffected by that same explosion (@#$#TRIBBLE%$% double standards).

Like targetable torps (it being one), you can be caught in the splash for it. Generally it is easy to avoid that splash...can be funny when some random pet flies by and pops it right on top of you.
I've had loads of fun using my Fleet T'Varo as a torpedo bomber. Of course, the first time I fired the destabilized plasma torpedo, a crystal shard flew right there, detonating the torpedo at point blank while my shields were down...
The bug stems from hitting AP:O. I was able to reproduce it at will when when I noticed the bug. If you hit APO before firing the torp it will just sit there. I sent in a report and maybe since you all have seen it and can now reproduce it can send in some more reports to get it fixed. Other than that I love that torp, I hit a tholian tarantula in azure rescue and brought his hull down to 15% after a nice rapid fire with APB to bring his shields down, plus you get the T1 tvaro console and it brings the cd on it really well and ups its damage.. Can't wait till I can get 2 pc adapted maco to up it some more.

That might explain why I've never seen the giant red torp just sit there, I'm a Sci captain and don't use any BOFF AP's.

I've killed myself with the big red ball as many times as I've killed the target, but it is pretty fun in STFs. 1 shot, goodbye cube (if you get it thru shields.) Transformers are good targets too.

You can put the 180? quantum or torpedoes with long cd (tricobalts, breen cluster,...)... you can turn fast to shoot them when needed. You could also carry tractor or chronometric mines to hold or slow down your targets before using torpedo spread. Multiple choices when you stop and think about it. If i were to do a torpedo build, i'd put a tricobalt in the back for sure, and no energy weapons at all so i don't need any energy on weapons, the other two... i'd have to think about them yet...
I love this ship. I'm flying the fleet version with the two-piece set and all cannons and turrets... it's a mean machine gun with a 2 min cd red-OH ****-torpedo. Really nice, just a bit short hull-wise, but really fun if you like escorts and know how to fly it.
I'm using 2 Plasma Dual Cannons, a Plasma DBB, and a plasma torp up front, 3 plasma turrets in the rear.
That's the combination that's working the best for me.

I chain two APO so that explains why I see it stall out so often.
My Romulan Liberated Borg character made it to Level 30 and beat the (old) Defense of New Romulus with the skill point bug.
Out of curiosity, is it possible to drop the Wide Angle launcher into your account bank, or does the game block that? I made what feels like a mistake and took my Romulan KDF, and am trying to figure out how to kit out a T'Varo torpedo boat.
No wide angle is character bound not account bound so us romulans can't use it I believe. For kdf you can do har'peng, rapid reload tansphasic, rommy torp from rep, and a torp of your choice in front then in rear use a trico mine and bio-neural in rear and do a bombing run. My thing is we get such a good boost from decloaking why do we want to be a torp boat and stay cloaked? I do believe we don't get our dmg bonus when we fire a torp while we are cloaked or am I wrong?

ok i am using 2 Nano Disruotor Dual Heavy Cannons ... 2 Torp (not sure which right now still Testing and 3 Nano Disruptor Turrets in the rear
And that works good ... i could get some Power from Weapons and put it into the Shields ...
18 Cpt on the way to 60: 14 of them are already 50 or over 50, one is 60 and 3 almost 43

Thanks for pointing that out. Required a minor change in tactics, but it's definitely more fun playing with the Mega Torp than the Mega Mine. Hopefully it gets addressed at some point...

I've got two mine layers and one torpedo aft. I've currently got two sets, one that is purely transphasic for destroying anything that doesn't have lots of hull, and one quantum based set for things like the Borg and CE.
My attack pattern is fly in fast, at around 4km, drop gravity well 1 on a group, then fire the giant destabilized torpedo. Then once I reach 1.5 km, I drop mines with Dispersal Pattern Beta and Attack Pattern Beta, Tactical Team, and fire I high yield 3 torpedo salvo on my way threw. I'm also a science captian, so I'll use sensor scan on my way in. If I have the singularity jump available, I use that at around 0 km, otherwise I run for my life before the giant explosion. When the mines crit, I've taken down entire groups of ships in one pass with the transphasics (PvE).

have a blast in PVP and PVE, the only thing what bothers me are my own explosions

Also, since I love it so much I suspect the devs will nerf that awesome torpedo in the very near future.
Don't believe the lies in this forum. I am NOT an ARC user. I play STO on Steam or not at all.

Got a Phaser Dual Heavy Cannons Mk XII [Acc]x3 as loot from completing that mission

Oh great, a pacifist torpedo...
