Video driver crash

adamkafeiadamkafei Member Posts: 6,539 Arc User
I'm not sure why as I was playing quite happily all day until about 2 or 3 hours ago on near ultra settings but as of then I have been unable to play, sometimes I can log in but within 5 minutes my video driver crashes (sometimes resulting in a BSOD) but everything else on my computer works, both Windows 7 and Windows 8 on my laptop are suffering from this issue.

I'm using an i5 2450 (Dual core, 2.5GHz, with hyperthreading), 8GBs of system RAM and an Nvidia GeForce GT 555m with 2GB dedicated VRAM running the most up to date driver in Win 7 and the one before in Win 8 (because the latest caused me problems).

Any help would be appreciated.

Crashes within 5 minutes could mean that your graphics chip is overheating, see if you can blow out the heatsink with forced air (with the laptop off) to get rid of dust that could be clogging the fan/heatsink.

You should be able to find a widget that will track your NVIDIA card's temp to see if temp is a problem.

STO has some very weird programming that caused my old graphics card to overheat in parts of the program you wouldn't expect.

Thanks for the advice guys, i remembered that I did some Windows updates yesterday and ran a (Windows 7) system restore before trying anything else and it now works again, good as new, I shall leave win 8 as it is and run updates until it works again, then I shall update win 7 again.

Once again, thanks for the help.

    Here we go again...

Having updated live to LoR trying to play it is causing my laptop to bluescreen on the loading screen, again with the graphics driver, the strange thing is that Tribble server plays fine, I'm patching STO in Windows 8 as I type to see if I can confirm my results here in which case it is something to do with the launcher/server but in the meantime, ideas guys?

I had the same problem. I used google and found Nvidia's recommended video settings for STO. No more crashes.

    Anti-Aliasing = off
    Shadow = low
    Bloom Effects = off

I'll look into that when I can load the game, thanks.

Meanwhile... *presses "engage", looks at BSOD and sighs* :P

Speccy should tell you how hot your system is getting.

I have a hardware monitor that is way, way, way better than Speccy, until today my temps have sat at about 80 (not bad for a gaming laptop) at near ultra settings, now it won't go beyond 77 on any and bluescreens, yet everything else I can run right now is fine with it, as is STO on Tribble server so I am confuzzeled

Just real quick. Just so I get a better idea. At what point exactly do you get the crash? I.E. Once it loads, when you've been playing for like ~ 3 or 4 minutes, yadda yadda.

Windows 7 dies upon closing the launcher and Windows 8 is going now that I have started the game in the launcher's safe mode.

Windows 8 is running the same settings as 7 minus one AA step (down from 8 to 4 after stepping up one step at a time from 0) and other than the login issue everyone seems to be having, it's fine.

I'm going to try running in standard mode and then try to repeat in 7.

Well now that I have tried in 7 even safe mode for holodeck bluescreens and causes code 43 on the GPU, looks like Cyrptic killed my graphics card
