I was browsing one of the older suggestion threads thinking back on some of the early days of STO shortly after launch, and about some of the things which today are taken for granted.
Remember when there weren't Autofire in space for more than 1 front and 1 aft weapon? Remember the bug where you could click autofire really quickly/lag out and add more weapons with autofire until relogging?
Remember Powerhue console command which let you edit the colors of weapons? Rainbows for everyone!
No manual weapon holstering, no death penalty, no skill point resets, auto engaging enemy contacts in sector space...
A lot have changed over the years, but there is still significant ground (space) to cover. Ever onwards, to boldly go towards a brighter (entertaining) future.
I loved those sector space ambushes. I wish they'd come back - only instead of always just being combat they could be random mini-missions. "Captain! We've been pulled out of warp by what appears to be Abraham Lincoln sitting on a throne..."
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.
Beaming from a planet to space but without a ship. Your character would be floating there without a ship.
Critical torpedo hits from all npc's.
Fed captains waking into bars and killing everyone. Starfleet style.
In all honesty though, without any sarcasm,my absolute favorite part of the game in the first few months of release was that undine mission when you go through the entire mission arc to go over and down a small hill and see the iconian gateway. The mission was ok but when I saw that gateway I was very impressed.
lots of things from the old days i remember, doing patrols as a part of the storyline for the feds, man that got tedious very fast...
the oddangle issue with the torpedo launchers, you position your ship at such an angle you could fire a very long line of torpedoes in a row very quickly, but only the last torpedo in that line when you readjusted actually counted as damage.
the good old days where you spent hours in borg space orbiting vorn, sibiran and qs, especially qs for KA only to fail it because of a lack of DPS or missing teamwork :P
the days where there was no lobi or lockbox TRIBBLE and the best items you could get is purple mark X items.
its usually the first time something is launched is when it is at its simplest, and compare it with today, i would rather have the grinding good old days.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
Awful sector space.
no foundry.
klingons had next to nothing. not even crafting or exploration clusters.
ESD was ugly.
no accolades.
no team level scaling.
no journal.
no cut scenes and next to no VO outside the tutorial.
no tier 5 iconic ships like galaxy, defiant, or vor'cha.
crafting was a mess.
no starbases, fleets were next to useless.
no endgame.
np pve queue.
and little pvp (oh wait)
Shared cooldowns on cannon weapons
Weapons power returning gradually after a firing cycle
Hilariously inaccurate help text in loading screens... Well, I guess not everything's changed.
I remember that bizarre trainwreck that was the original crafting system, with no visible progress indicator. And the multi-path mess that followed it. Then the more concise and less moneysink version that we have now.
End of Open Beta when the Borg invaded Sector Space and ESD.
Inviting and then fighting Klingons on a Federation bridge (or vice versa) for epic ground pvp, on the spot.
STF's used to be a challenging equivalent of a raid, the days of 2+ hour Infected runs (with no neon green bridges to prevent you falling into the plasma)
The level cap being 45.
Rolling a KDF character after playing Fed character to level 6, then grinding your way to max level via PvP.
The era when there was no Tribble test server so things coming to the main server were a surprise.
Sector Space looking like a giant blue / red race track littered with stars and no other option to view it.
Spending hours in Vega Colony just mowing down Borg Drones, just for the epic fun of it.
Spending hours in Space PvP as you see who makes the first move; the Fed ball of ships huddled together for safety, or the wave of KDF ships ready to decloak at a moments notice.
The awesomeness of the DS9 Ground Fleet Event, because it took friggin forever and being able to complete it showed skill and patience.
Beating the Crystalline Entity with Ramming Speed.
Watching your ship "Warp Out" of a zone, prior to the model turning to a safe direction, and laughing as your ship just warps through planets, space stations etc with no problem
Beaming into a ground map, as your ship.
Being able to call in an infinite amount of red shirts.
Destroying the Infected Boss, with 25 red shirts and five characters.
The days before lockboxes, PWE, and the huge emphasis on the C-Store.
And probably a dozen other things I'm forgetting.

Now that would be awesome. (Of course, it's all fun and games until you encounter Nixon in space.)

This is what I miss the most. All the BIS stuff you buy for cash that gives a flat out advantage over other players is appalling. And the less said about those lock-boxes the better.

Back in those days, people complained about how terrible it was to have to pay a sub and pay for premium content.
Not sure about early STO as I only started to play in December of 2012, however I am an Old School Trekie and it always bothers me how every mission I seem to go in guns a blazing, where in all the Star Trek episodes I ever watched that was against the Prime Directive... at the very least they should allow for some dialogue to take place before we start shooting, though I guess some players would rather shoot first and not bother asking any questions at all and obviously the dev's are in that category...

I think the issue is that it's easy to make combat-related content. Making non-combat related content is very difficult, time consuming, and even when they do it a lot of people don't like it.
Just look at new romulus, they make you scan water samples and take radiation samples, tag wildlife etc. People hated it and asked why an Admiral was doing all this useless work they should make an ensign do?
Exploration content is extraordinarily difficult to make, and even harder to make it have replay value. That's just how gaming is, ESPECIALLY in an MMO.
Remember when lockboxes were not being pushed in your face all the time?
Remember when C-store items were just cosmetic items?
Remember when the F2P riff-raff were kept out?

Remember when STO was dying and F2P saved it? yep, almost forgot that part.
I remember leveling my first Klingon character entirely in exploration missions, without a working tri-corder. Didn't touch a single PvP queue with her.

Content was king ...
Devs that still cared ...
No Carriers , cool PVP ...
Because getting a free expansion is dev's not "caring".

Sometimes, I look at my early screenshots, and I just wonder what the hell we were all thinking playing something that looked like that.

Going into those exploration clusters and beaming down to find that my away team and all the enemy NPCs have fallen through the floor and died.
Going off to scan for plants on exploration missions only to find that the "plants" are actually pieces of walls and columns.
...What? What do you mean those last two still happen today?

Have you actually heard the voice overs in this game that aren't Nimoy or Crosby? This sounds like a serious upgrade.

I also still have a couple of forcefield keys from the DS9 Cardassian Fleet Action that used to exist.
I would gladly accept that instead of some terrible PUG I can't avoid.
