IGN KILLED it in their review. Cant say I didnt see it coming. The recent trailers confirmed I was 99% sure I wasnt going to buy the game. This review closes up that last 1%. I had heard there would be stuff in the game that related to the movie and playing the game would give you more insight into the movie's story, but that wasnt mentioned in the review, so I guess its really a stand alone P.O.S. game.
While having some control learning curve issues easily conquered by the reconfigurable buttons, It is a glorious romp through the new Enterprise!
I walked around the bridge and checked out all the consoles and goodies that were missed in the quick scenes in the movies. I got to look out the Bridge window.
As Kirk an Orion girl gave me a little wave on my way to the bridge. (Nice Touch)
I got to go to the shuttle bay and check all that out.
Voice talent is crisp and concise, all the movie actors are onboard.
Playing this game is like being in the movie and the different Gorn subspecies are neat.
You can even use their Plasma Rifles!
Reviews are probably done by JJ haters.
Better pray Paramount/ CBS doesn't make an MMO out of it (CBS comes up in the credits)
I went in with low expectations, but I have been pleasantly surprise with how much I've enjoyed my time in the game so far. I'm around half way through the story, and plan on wrapping it up this weekend.
I wouldn't call it a great game, but I wouldn't say it's bad either. It could have used some more time in the oven, for sure, but there is a fun third person shooter with an entertaining plot in the JJ Trek universe here. Bugs, yes. Co-op broken at launch, sure. These issues seem to be the norm with 99% of new game releases these days.
If I had to rate it on a scale of 1 - 10, I'd give it a 6.5 at this point. It's no GOTY contender, but its not bad either. Just downloaded a 2.5 gb patch, and about to see what that's all about...
The game is mediocre, not absolutely terrible like most reviewers are saying (I bet they are doing this for page views). There ARE worse Star Trek games out there.
I have a bigger problem with the Gorn being a ruthless aggressor species trying to overrun the Federation rather than just being fiercely territorial as they've always been depicted.
I'll rent it through gamefly because a) it is Trek, and b) Play As KIRK, but my expectations are fairly low. (They were extremely low before I saw this thread, but thlay and rayus have boosted them.)
...Oh, baby, you know, I've really got to leave you / Oh, I can hear it callin 'me / I said don't you hear it callin' me the way it used to do?...

Oh my word I'm so glad I watched this video and prevented my wallet from saying Captain she cannae handle it through to the eventual destruction of ?40 from same wallet.
But there is a question that needs answered - why, oh why, oh why, oh why, does almost every Star Trek related computer game need a major overhaul or is just generally TRIBBLE on release? Why spend money developing a game which is just so bad and then release it when its like still in omega mode and like twenty-three letters away from alpha never mind beta.
Why not instead invest it in Star Trek Online and save introducing such a bad Star Trek game. I've been a critic of Star Trek Online in the past since I bought it three years ago and have watched huge ongoing improvements. It is my belief that Atari were behind much of the trouble and the fact they went into administration cements that view. You would honestly think that game companies would learn from history - but I'm sorry to say that once again this is NOT THE CASE.
Oh and the video made me laugh as the gameplay is just so dire. They actually want ?40 for this right now - not in six months when its finished - NOW!
He's just another JJ hater which is sad because I usually like his reviews. You can hear it from the start he has already judged the game and is just bashing it out of spite. Oh well, his loss.
If there is a demo out there, that will sell you.
It is a beautiful gamescape and even he had to admit the music rocks.
If you hate JJ and hate the new movies you will loath this game.
If you liked the movie you will at least like it.
Oh, and you have to play beyond the first cutscenes to where you are on the Bridge 6 hours earlier before you get to the good stuff.
that vid makes the game look buggier than ... well than i experienced it...
my guess is, because he told Kirk where to stand that one time, Kirk kept running to that spot (even after loading the next 2 maps, lol), i never did that and did not have any pathing or A.I. problems...
i did not use it because i noticed instantly that there is no button to recall your AI partner once you placed him somewhere (how st00pid is that? once you set a rally point you need to set more just to keep him moving?!).
Mass Effect really did the AI companion thing a lot better, did not need to pull out a friggen tricorder to tell Tali where to stand either...
i liked it so far, but i really didn't expect much of it to begin with and thx to STO i'm used to all kinds of horrible Bugs, so i can work around those without going completely nuts over the few i encounter.
although i would totally suggest to wait until it is 5 bucks on Steam if you can wait. (even with the retail box you are forced to use it through Steam, so you may just as well wait for a steam sale and skip the retail box for the shelf...)
oh and i got 2 kino tickets from Amazon for Into Darkness... because i bought it through them... that's about half the cost of the game already and of course i'm gonna watch that one.
I enjoyed it. I found the game to be quite good at delivering what I'm generally looking for in a Star Trek game: a story. In this case, a 15-hours long interactive story where you get to participate during the action sequences.
Although the game is a linear storytelling romp, foregoing free-roaming in favor of tugging you along where the story needs you to be, it does reward you for being observant and looking beyond the beaten path. The game is not an RPG, but rather a cover-shooter that doesn't have quite the polish Mass Effect 2 had (I did enjoy it a lot more than I did Mass Effect 1). While I was struck a bit with the impression that it was 'slightly behind times', it didn't make it a bad game. After all, I enjoyed Elite Force, and Mass Effect - this game had a lot in common that I could appreciate.
So, if what you're looking for is THE BEST GAMEPLAY EVER... you probably won't find it in it. However, it has a lot to please a Star Trek fan tolerant with the JJ reboot; and there's a fair share of homages for the original series as well. The game practically oozes with the feel that those whom made it were Star Trek fans that were trying hard to pay attention and deliver, regardless of how the result might cut short from excellence.
I hope this game succeeds marketing wise. I enjoyed it, I think it deserves it, and I'd like for Digital Extremes to see this lucrative enough to work on another Star Trek-themed game in the future - say one set between the second and third reboot movies. Just like Bioware learned from Mass Effect 1 and submitted the quite-enjoyable Mass Effect 2... I bet Digital Extremes could likely learn from how this game is received and manage to make any follow up even more polished and successful.
To be honest, direct movie tie ins tend to be pretty bad. IP games that are developed independently tend to be better. There are a few exceptions both ways here and there.

Yeah, this is what I clicked into the thread to say. So you beat me to it. I guess I'll just expand that by thinking of how many bad Batman games and Superman games I've played over the decades. These days they finally made a really good Batman series. But it wasn't tied to any of the films.
I checked the game out but just couldn't get past their interpretation of the Gorn.
It's just to far off from what we've seen in the past. (JJ-Trek not withstanding)
I guess I've got to much Classic Trek in me.
Tails... really??
Don't get me wrong, I love Trek-2009 and all the Jurassic Park movies...
I just don't think the two belong in the same game.

Ya know what. It's good to try something out first before you judge it, that being said
People have the right to disagree. if someone doesn't like it, that doesn't mean their "j.j. haters" a term his wife most likely came up with for anyone who disagrees with her hubby.
on the other hand if some people decide they like it fine by me.
that being said the gorn do look like Jurassic park critters

abamscrapverse is just that and no amount of crud he has throws out for computer games and such will change that, infact i have not even once looked into that new star trek game because i saw absolutely no interest in trying and still find no interest in trying, the same with the new film coming out. so if the game is dead on arrival, i frankly couldnt care less.
T6 Miranda Hero Ship FTW. Been around since Dec 2010 on STO and bought LTS in Apr 2013 for STO.
I walked around the bridge and checked out all the consoles and goodies that were missed in the quick scenes in the movies. I got to look out the Bridge window.
Are you sure you didn't wander into an Apple Store by mistake?
Imho the review is pretty much spot on and is consistent with the reviews of pretty much every other review out there as well as my own experience.
Mediocre textures, sometimes awkward animations, horrible AI, rather bad UI and sometimes frustrating and gamebreaking bugs (dying by falling through the floor after not having been able to save for 20 minutes for example). Space-combat is just like something from Rebel Assault or SWTOR. The story left much to be desired, too.
I did like the JJ relaunch, the movie was really entertaining, the game on the other hand is not. It just feels like something that might have been quite good in 2005, but not today, not if you compare it against other 3rd person titles that are currently on the market.
The game is pretty much like most other ST pc/video game title out there. It's rushed out, technology-wise a few years behind the competition, lacks story, yet very nice soundtrack & voice-overs. It's not really worth more than a "D+".
Considering all the marketing & adds it would have been healthier for that game if half that marketing money spend would have been spend on the game development instead.

No, according to one of the developers they were based on the Velociraptors from Jurassic Park.
As for the reviews, should be no surprise. The best game to come out of the people involved was still mediocre and derivative bargain bin junk.

so if something is bad you have to like it or else you are a JJ hater?
No, but if something is awesome and reported as bad then yes.

no sir, that will never be tolerated in a Star Trek title!
