Okay so I tried logging in and I get the following Program Error message:

Couldn't create D3D device.

and

Fatal error: Unable to create render device.

Everything was working fine yesterday and for the two weeks prior to that. Any explanations.

Dell Computer
Windows XP SP3
Pentium E5300 @ 2.6 GHz
4 GB Ram

That error is caused by 2 things. An incorrect Directx install(redownload it and reinstall it), and out of date or incorrectly installed graphics drivers.

What card are you using atm? Because if youre using a pentium E5300, im guessing its probably a low spec one.

It is not necessarily an out of date driver issue. While trying to access the main holodeck server today, I get the same message unable to create D3D device. When I access the Tribble Test Server, I do not get that message and the game runs fine.

There could be some sort of file corruption in the "Live" section of the game install, force verifying the files might correct a similar problem.

You could try deleting the various D3D .dll files in the live install, then get the client to mirror them and create new .dll files.

I had the same problem some time ago. What I did was uninstall the drivers and did a fresh install of the same version. I haven't had a driver problem for a couple of weeks now.

It can hardly be a driver issue or a DirectX issue since I have done absolutly no changes to tmy system and have this problem. The only thing that has happened since last time i have played and attempting this time is ANOTHER PATCH

Update your drivers, it'll fix it. That's what's happened to me before and updating my drivers worked like a charm.

It doesn't have to be a change - some file has just got itself corrupted. Reinstalling should replace all driver-related files with good versions, which will fix it if it's one of those.

The other file which can get corrupted is the game's config file, which stores very little besides video card settings. Select "safe mode" in the options menu in the launcher, that should unstick it if that's the problem.

Get off the driver issue....I have absolutely the most up to date drivers on a new card completely compatible. DxDiag and Direct test all show everything is fine. This is some other issue and trying to get support to respond for a week...real slow and I am about to say nuts to this dog and pony show before ever getting it going. This all started with the last patch...the nimrods missed something and now I am seeing the days tic by on my monthly membership

I had an issue where I was unable to play CoH for a few days (due to a technical error), and they went ahead and refunded my days.

But just give the drivers a shot. No harm done if that's not the issue.

Hello, I just installed the game and tried to launch and I just got this error message:

fatal error, couldn't create d3d device

My computer is a pentium 4 3,2 ghhz

    ram 2,8 gb

    video card ati hd 3800

    I actually use direct x 9.0c vers. 4.09.0000.0904

my ati drivers are the only one who works so don't tell me to update them, I tried in the past and I just messed up the computer in a crazy way and I had to reinstall them from my windows cd and almost had to reinstall windows itself.

I hope somebody can help me to find a solution for my problem, maybe you can tell me where can I find a more recent version of DX 9.0c if there's one hoping that could fix the problem, thanks.

I get this error on my Nvidia gpu system where I open up multiple instances of the game. Seems that issue is related to video memory or something, but it does have outdated drivers as well.

You sure nothing else is taking up your VRAM for some awd reason? :)

First of all, I'd like to say that it makes no sense to me that people ask for help and then get confrontational when somebody offers advice. When receiving free advice that you asked for, take it or leave it, but don't get all grouchy with someone who is trying to help you for free.

That being said, I am encountering the same issue and would love some of that free advice.

    My specs are:
    AMD Athlon XP+ 5000 (2.2 GHz)
    2 GB RAM
    nVidia Geforce 8400 GT
    750 GB SATA RAID (stripe)

After seeing the advice given previously, I have updated my video drivers from nVidia's site, updated my DirectX installation and removed all of the D3D .dll files in the Live folder. I was certain my video drivers were up to date but I took these steps anyway because that rules them out completely as the cause of the problem.

Having taken these steps, is there anything anyone can think of for me to try prior to contacting support?

Thanks in advance for any help offered.

    EDIT -

OK, I got it on my own and here's how:

This is on my son's computer which I need to be able to administrate. As such, I want to be able to log in remotely. I installed a 3rd-party remote access solution and then turned off the Windows remote connection ability. To do this, log in as administrator, right-click on My Computer, go to Properties, click the Remote tab, and uncheck the boxes for Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop.

    updated my DirectX installation

I;ve suggested this a few times previous as it;s an issue with other softwares but v9.0c needs to be installed on top of what you have. For whatever reason it never comes down when people upgrade. Not sure why.

    Please give this a looksee:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

Down towards the bottom is a mention that you can install it on top of v11 so you;re safe with it. It just updates files related to v9 which still exist on your drive.

Please give that a try, reboot and see if that helps.

I guess I could have clarified that I had DirectX 9.0c, but thanks for trying to help anyway. As I posted a little bit ago, I got the issue resolved.

This is what steered me toward the solution. :)
