I plan on using my FTER until something better comes along (I paid $20 for it, after all); I understand I'll probably never get a bug, and unless I can get it on a handful of keys I'll never get any other lock box ship, so I'll probably be waiting until they move onto the next tier of z-store ships (which I can only assume would offer superior boff ranks...well, probably just one slot increased by one rank).
That said, I've got an idea for turning the Gal-X or Gal-R into a console cruiser on a science captain. I already have some of the needed consoles from the console packs, but the remainder (and whichever Gal version I pick) cost something like $100+ worth of zen points; suffice it to say, I'd be far more enthused to give Cryptic my damn money if I wasn't faced with having to re-grind all that Omega/Romulan rep. I guess I'll just keep hoping they make the rep grinds account wide (seems like a great innovation for the genre), so that I can realize my dream of a (useless) console cruiser.
"Tolerance and apathy are the last virtues of a dying society." - Aristotle
I use a ship until something more effective comes along. I've used a Galor, D'kora, Fleet Excelsior, and now am very happy with the Jem-Hadar Dreadnought. I never considered using the Breen cruiser because I hate ugly asymmetrical ships no matter how overpowered they are. I considered switching to the Fleet Ambassador but could see nothing about it that makes it a step up from the Dread.
i'Ve bought a few ships (actually a little bit more than a few), but the ONLY ship i am using for active playing which is not a lockbox ship is my B'Rel.
my second favourite being the fleet somraw, and the wells for my fed main.
i really wanted to try some fed sci ships, so i do have a few models there, but i rarely used them longer than a day.
I have all of the T5 Fed C-Store Escorts (Defiant-R, MVAE, Armitage, Steamrunner), Fleet Defiant and Chimera. For cruisers I have the Oddy 3-pack, Galaxy-X Dreadnought, Ambassador, Regent and Excelsior Retrofit. Only Cruiser I don't have is the Galaxy-R. Also have the Chel Grett and Mirror Patrol Escort.
The Oddy was mostly bought mostly for my Engineer who I've sadly allowed to languish mostly unplayed. The Galaxy-X was a vanity purchase. I have the Venture skin from when I was leveling the Engineer, and so I could get the Antimatter console. The Venture-X looks awesome, but unfortunately I never found a build with that thing I was happy with, so It's mostly collected dust.
My main Tac will only jump into the Regent or Excelsior for cruisers, and then only if I've gotten sick of flying escorts. He mostly hops from Escort to Escort. The Fleet Defiant is the permanent STF ship, where all my best consoles and Mk. XII set gear end up. The rest I swap weapon and gear sets around, and hop ship to ship as I please. Most recently he's ended up in the Mirror Patrol Escort running a full set of Rommy rep weapons with the Singularity Harness set and my XI MACO set. Was fun to dust off the old MVAM console, hadn't used it in quite some time. The ones that get the most use lately are the Steamrunner and Armitage though.
My KDF has been running his Pegh'qu ever since he hit 50, and I haven't seen much to coax him out of it yet. He got the Kamarag, and I did one Tau Dewa patrol in it and decided it wasn't worth it. His disruptor/APB build in the Pegh'qu just works too well for PvE.
Really, it depends on the character and how satisfied I am with what I have for them.
With my Tac Fed, I really don't see using anything other than the Chel Grett because it just makes such an awesome torpedo/mine boat. Only thing I might do is refit their Vesta as a plasma-torp boat with the borg/romulan sets(Regen shields really compliment a torpedo-based/minimal weapons power science ship).
My Sci Fed still seems to be bouncing between their Advanced Escort and Vesta, depending on my mood. Can't tell you how long I've been waiting for a science ship as aggressive as the Vesta for this character, but there are still times I'm not quite satisfied with it. There are a lot of nice tactical skills that compliment science ships, but they just can't slot them well(Kinetic weapon abilities, Attack Pattern: Beta/Delta, etc.)
My Eng Fed.. is still looking for a nice, well rounded(4 tac, 3 sci boff slots) cruiser that can mount cannons.. I've probably gone through more ships with this character than any other trying to find something that I like.
My Eng KDF seems to have finally settled nicely into the Kamarag after transitioning about from the Negh'var and Mirrior Qin. The ship has impressed me more than I expected it to with how flexible, yet deadily it can be. Not as crazy as the Chel Grett, but it can handle a pair of cubes without much trouble.
My Sci KDF.. is pretty much stuck in their Corsair for thematic reasons. Don't really see putting them into a different ship unless they actually release an Orion ship with an even more support-centric theme.
The LT Comm and Comm fedscorts - use them with almost all my characters when they rank up. Very happy with both.
Koro't'inga - use with 99% of all new KDF I roll. Very happy with this ship.
In contrast...
Oberth and NX - got them when KDF were still LT level. Since they got booted out of the lower levels, I haven't used them since. Both were a waste of my store points since I got them for Lt level PvP, which is usually completely dead now. And even in that regard, I find my CE Connie is much better.
for me and my 10 Characters it really depends on 2 factors:
- am i happy with the ship how it is now = keep it forever!!!! ...until i find some major annoying pet peeve with it or i just can't stand it anymore.
(ship errors and OCD can be a GOOD reason to swap out of something, sometimes you notice an ship error after months and suddenly you hate the ship... i hate it when that happens)
- if i want a new ship, is there an alternative that would make more sense.
my captain has to fit the ship and the ship has to fit the captain... otherwise it would be chaos!
before the Reputation System i started a new Character when i wanted a new Ship -> that meant i REALLY had to WANT that ship.
But after the Reputation System, it is just too much work to pull up another character to Endgame AND keep the other 10 Chars rolling.
In fact i deleted my 11th lvl 50 Character because of the Rep System, the only one i could let go without feeling the loss. SCI Caitian in Atrox... just was not for me, and using a SCI captain in yet another Escort... nah i already have a SCI in an MVAM... that is just the same. But with the REP System the GRIND just became too much.
The other 10 all had a reason to stay, not this one.
But i sure as hell will not make another char again, ok ONE Romulan MAYBE... if the Warbirds get a real visual revamp and look damn AWESOME... and not as cheap as the NPC Ships do now.
The Vesta is my most used ship throughout all my fed toons. It is so versatile that it fits any roll. Sure, a tactical officer dish out more dps with weapons in a escort, and an engineer in a cruiser may live longer, but the whole package of the Vesta class, the layout of the boffs offers such variaty, maneuverability & size, the ship specific consoles, the looks,... Its my "almost" perfect ship. I dont see any decline in use for me with this ship anytime soon.
The andorian escorts will hog some time, but i dont see those as replacements.
Fun at the side, at most.
Second one must be the Excelsior refit. Smaller cruiser, which means it actually can turn,
beautifull looks, especially with the borg set, plus, that lt commander tac boff unlocks some powerful attacks.
Worst buy? The Atrox... Is that its name? The giant blue brick... Oboy, i did go wrong with that one.
Hmmm I did get the Wells recently too. Not very fond of that one either. I thought i could like it, but after testruns here and there, i figured it out it was not for me.
Want 2 sell: Wells class. Slightly used. 30 mill. Ooh pardon. Its bound...Shame really. Someone else could've had alot more fun in that one, than me.
I have a bunch of other cstore ships laying around that i use from time to time for variaty when im bored of the current ship im using.
I only bought the TOS ship for my first adventures in the game. Loved every minute of it. Then I got the low level Excelsior. Also loved that one for what I had time with. I plan on getting one of the refits soon.
So far I'm getting the good out of the Ambassador.
USS Casinghead NCC 92047 launched 2350
Fleet Admiral Stowe - Dominion War Vet.
As I'm usually creating a new character for each new ship I buy, I'm still playing with every RA/VA ship I bought regularly.
Only a few mid- and lowlevel ships as well as shuttles don't get much playtime. For example: after I bought a Peregrine, I never touched the Stalker again.
I make a character for every ship I want (up to 24 now). My goal is to have each character have a different endgame ship so I will be using all the endgame ships I buy for as long as I play STO, be it fleet, cstore or lockbox. For non endgame ships, I find subspace jump, aceton assimilator, plasmodic leech, isometric charge and graviton pulse all to be useful.
I never understood why some people have a whole bunch of lockbox ships on just 1 character, its such a waste ..., ships that wont be used ever (except if theres a console/pet bonus from having both)
My pattern is this: I buy a ship . . . if it performs well I fly her until the next ship comes out. I buy all of the ships from the store. Star Trek nostalgia. I am a collector. Actively in battle I take in whatever I play best with at the time, but I absolutely love keeping the newer toys out while they are new and fresh.
I keep going back to my fleet patrol escort. I try getting a decent build out of all of them but after a few hours playing with each, the Fleet patrol escort is always top dog. Looking forward to trying out the fleet defiant but that will be a few more weeks.
When i buy a ship from the c-store, i usually only use it for like 2 weeks then switch back to other ships i have. Then maybe a month or 2 later i use that ship again just to look cooler and check out the new console or so again. Then the cycle repeats its self with a new ship or one I already own. I just get bored with new ships fast.
Just wondering how long you guys use your new ships before switching back to another ship.
Note: I am NOT saying that the c-store ships are bad ships.
It depends on my mission, if I am helping someone grind then I use the in-game ships. If I am doing Borg missions I use the Dreadnought for elite and the Chimera for Regular. I use my Odyssey for mirror and any fleet or Federation PvE missions. I also have shuttles and the NX class I mess around with.
Wanting to keep a ship for a while is one of the reasons I don't usually buy low tier ships. Why bothing paying money for something if I am only going to use it for a week then trash the thing.
Honestly, I try to diversify what ships I use with what characters. So I tend to have one canon ship (yeah, I like to use ships from the movies/tv series) per character. Though I usually try to match up a ship for the character I am creating rather then create a character for a ship.
As a f2p person, I only bought one C-store ship that I had the patience to grind out the zen for, and that is the Armitage. I use that as my main ship for my Tactical and alien Engineer. My science officer is a bit low leveled for it.
I'm tempted to maybe get the vesta for my science character, but I think I'll wait for that for a bit.

It really depends on my builds, and what's available to try.
My first c-store purchase was the Odyssey 3-pack. For the most part is sat unused for over a year until only recently. My engineering toon now runs a Plasma Tank, and I'm loving it.
I've bought the multi-vector assault ship. Was fun for a while, but it sits unused. Likely less than two weeks used.
My Klingon uses the Garumba Siege destroyer exclusively, and I still believe it's among the best non-klingon ships in the game. But it's just for farming dilithium.
My scitoon has a vanity issue, and we've burned through every sci ship available included the Atrox. I then acquired the wells temporal and the destroyer for my sci toon. Was fun for a bit, but soon lost interest when the Vesta became available. Maybe used the wells for 2 months? The Vesta has become my sci toons favourite.
Too be honest, if I was so enamoured with my engineer's plasma tank, I'd be using the engineering Vesta - a resilient little ship.
The ship I have the most fun with is the Breen Chel Grett destroyer. For a free ship, it is amazingly well balanced design. The key factor for me is it's Lt. Comm science slot, adding a gravity well for mob control. I use both an all-energy (canon) and torp mix.
on my Engineer I've been in my Tac Oddy since it came out. On my Tac Officer he was in the Retrofit Defiant until the Fleet version came out and then he jumped over to the Fleet version.
I use my defiant and MV, both upgraded to Fleet variants on my Fed Tact. My fed Sci flies her Nebula (now a fleet version) and a HEC (will be upgraded to fleet)
KDF side, my Sci has all three time ships, my KDF Tact flies a fleet Kamarang, while my KDF Eng has her Fleet Vor'cha, and Kamarang Retrofit.
I am not currently using my Vestas (bought the 3 pack) or the steamrunner (I do use the console). The Vesta I have two differen ones built are 3rd and 4th place for my Fed Sci toon.
No sure what to do about the steam runner... Would love to get a tier 5 Ambasador going on a toon, and have no interest in the andorian ships.
Might pick up the b'rel doing the nex ship sale.
I did see someone post about the New Orleans class being in the works, if it is some kind of cruiser/escort hybrid I would be interested in that.
frankly I would love to see some Missions Pod options for the Nebula, even if they were z-store purchases. It is supossed be a modularity designed ship.
I have purchsed all the fed escorts save for the Andorrans ones and the gladius, I use their consoles.
But yes, right now the Vesta 3 pack is the z-store ship I am not using, but tha may change, who is to say. I have one running phaser cannons and 1 with tetryons at the moment, collecting dust.
Thanks for the Advanced Light Cruiser, Allied Escort Bundles, Jem-Hadar Light Battlecruiser, and Mek'leth
