So I've had this issue for a long time. Specifically, I've had it over two separate computers. The only commonalities are 1) an nvidia graphics card, and 2) Windows 8. It'd be really great if this didn't devolve into Windows 8 bashing; that's not why I'm here. Moving on.
STO is crashing all the damn time. Generally, it'll crash as soon as the character selection is about to come up. Sometimes I'll get to actually see the character select before it dies. If I start in safe mode, it seems to work - then I can bump up the settings, and an indeterminate amount of time later, it will crash. We're talking straight CTDs, "gameclient.exe has stopped responding" here - no CrypticError or anything. Well, I did see CrypticError once, but I think that was a fluke.
So this is where it gets a bit weird. I had this issue on my old computer after I updated the nvidia drivers for it, and it'd work if I reinstalled the old ones - but after that, it'd start crashing again every time I restarted, until I did an upgrade and a rollback of said drivers. Weird, but workable. Lived with that for a while, until I built my latest rig. It worked fine after the initial setup, but then, again, I made the mistake of updating my drivers. Now it's crashing again, and I can't for the life of me find a driver that will make it work - and I'm a bit reluctant to go back to the 180.xx series, as I think those were made before my GPU actually came out.
Things I know will be the first suggestions: No, I won't go back to Windows 7. That's a silly suggestion. Yes, I've done completely clean driver installs, both via nvidia's clean install utility thing, and manually. No, my computer is not overheating. No, I'm not having this issue with any games. The only thing I have yet to check is if it occurs with other Cryptic games, but I don't have space on my SSD for Champs right now.
Specs:
i5-3570K, Currently not overclocked.
MSI Z77 MPOWER.
Gigabyte GTX 670.
2x 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3.
Samsung 840 Pro 128GB SSD.
Corsair TX650 PSU.
I can have a dxdiag if necessary. Any thoughts/suggestions/things I've overlooked?
Don't know if it would help at all, but you could try and set your DEP to overlook STO. Might be the issue, but it's more of a long shot.
Edit:
I'm downloading the game on my W8 machine now. Let's see if I can trigger some of the same issues as you. Will be back later on the matter as it will take some time and I'll get some sleep while it runs.
But from my understanding alot of people have had some issues with GTX 6xx Cards. Maybe some idea in those areas that can help you in the mean time?!? Can't hurt to take a look...
It's already set to only run for essentially Windows processes. Damn, got my hopes up and everything.
EDIT: The odd thing to note regarding the potential issues with 6xx cards, is that the card I was having trouble with previously was a 560 Ti. I wouldn't think I'd find that issue across generations like that.
I tried every possible solution to how I could frack up the game the worst possible way. However it didn't create a single crash for me. I got a GTX650 in this machine (picked the closest to yours I had) but everything ran smoothly and without any trouble even at ultimate settings.
I wouldn't think the issue should go across generations of cards unless somewhere in the mingle of everything theres an tiny file messing everything up. Had loads of issues with my old card after upgrading. Took almost a complete system wide file-by-file search to find one anoing file that was corrupt.
But I'm getting lost in what it might could be. Will try and see if I can get a hold of my friend and see if he has any suggestions, if nothing pops up here in the mean time.
Just to make sure it isn't my build (I've been known to make stupid mistakes) I just tested my heavily modded Skyrim for a couple hours, and it's been rock solid. From memory, I don't think I'm using DX11, as the ship model errors kind of get to me - but I don't have an easy way to check, given that it doesn't tell you which you're actually using. I'll have to play around with that, see if it helps. It's worth noting that when it does work, I can switch between DX9 and DX11 with no issues, and no crashing.
I very much appreciate the help, by the way. This is kind of aggravating - my fleets are missing me. Well, probably not, but I can delude myself.
Wellp, looks like I fixed it. Somehow, my motherboard's OC Genie got turned on - though I have no idea how. Apparently it's not very good at voltages, so turning it off and restarting seems to have fixed the issue. Go me.
Good to hear Lucien, and don't worry your not deluding yourself, we do miss you...and the ships you give away ...maybe not in that order *whistle *whistle.

Good luck
Me and some of my friends crash quite frequently;
GTX 670
i3770k
Everything rockstable, latest driver.
I'm running DX11 though.
