What is the Arc Client?
Install Arc

Compression Error

shalktonshalkton Member Posts: 12 Arc User
Running WIndows 8 I downloaded the client from the torrent link and installed it. When I first ran I get the long patch I did interrupt this patching once but resumed it later. Now when I load into the game at the character selection screen I get the error pictured here (Dropbox Link)

After getting this error I have to restart my machine to get the patch to even work again.

I do not believe windows 8 is supported atm since its not techincally due for sales release till october. Will need to install windows 7 and dual boot into that for gaming till 8 is supported, hopefully we can get a dev to post.

Also this might be a good question to ask for the upcoming ask cryptic ;)

I hadn't tried running it in WIndows 7 compatibility mode yet. I'm installing the steam client version, I run some other MMOs on the same machine with no major issues so i'm not sure if the windows 8 issue is really the problem or a red herring.

Will know better once i get the new version installed.

Sounds like a corrupted data file. You will have to uninstall and reinstall the game in the hopes that the file downloads properly. Unfortunately the game uses compressed data files that decompresses on the fly and the 3 texture files are 1GB each.

And since you can't look into the .pigg files to see which one you will probably have to reinstall and update the entire thing.

Yes uninstalling and reinstalling did indeed work, i installed the steam version of the game doubt that it made any difference which version i installed but I wasn't taking any chances.

Issue resolved and Looks like I'm getting better performance than I was previously so YAY!

See this LONG thread and various troubleshooting steps. The basic issue is a corrupted HOGG file. Replacing them may solve the issue (either TEMPORARILY or PERMANENTLY). If not it's a more complicated fix, most likely. We've been fighting a similar problem for MONTHS.

Try going into your STO install into the LIVE directory and into the PIGGS folder. Delete all 3 Texture HOGG files there. Open the launcher. Go to Options and tell it to verify all files. Then patch. It'll be like a 3-6GB patch or so to download all the HOGG files. That MAY fix it if it was a 1-time error.

If not, you may need to check your memory modules to see if they're defective. That was the only solution that fixed it on my friend's computer. I just updated that thread with our solution. So far the only PERMANENT solution I've seen (no dev input, really, sadly, after like 6-8 mos of forum hell)...

    Best,
