:mad:Right; If it isn't the constant connection issues it's some other god damn problem.
OK, so after two or more months of frustrating server issues, I now load up my game launcher and bang. CRASH!! WTF! is going on at the office? To busy building new ships to flog, rather than fix these WIDESPREAD issues regarding the ability of many players, to actually play the game. No play, No money!! Saves?
OK Rant over. What the h$ll is this new issue I'm having? I re-installed the game and it worked for a whole 12 hours after i de-selected fast launch: Now today I load this new patch and get hit with this garbage ERROR 36!?
I'd love some help here before I eat my dogs in a blind rage... I aint no IT expert, so do me and many others a favour and at the very least respond to the problems on this forum, and also quit the blaming of the players for the problems.
So tell me ==== ERRROR 36: A file was was locked that could not be open? wtf does that mean to normal people without a degree in computer science? I really would like to play this game withought having to re-install it every half a day.

It means that some other program (such as a Anti-Virus utility) is using the file, and won't let anyone else use it until it finishes...
At the very serious risk of sounding like a chimp with a keyboard - How in the name of begeebers do I resolve this?
The obvious thing to try is to look at your Anti-Virus configuration, and see if you can 'exclude' the directory where STO is installed from the Anti-Virus Scans...
Another possible source of the problem is the Windows File Index Scan, (used to make faster file lookup possible) which can also be disabled...
The game was working fine this morning befor the 2 hr shard work. What can be done, short of deleting and downloading the game again, to get access again? I log in as the administrator.

Hello Mate,
Same storry for me once again. Last time i ran as admin for a while then went back to run as normal, and it worked fine. As for the real issue, I've no idea (chimp with keyboard)
Anyone out there with a bit more knowledge for us dunces?
Hi gggooly
There is a download you can get ( http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/sh...d.php?t=270847) download it to downloads. Its a .rar so you'll need a program to open it (I recomend Winzip which you can get an 'evaluation version' for.) In your downloads make a new folder called star trek online and extract the .rar to there. Open the folder inside is another 2 folders 1 called localdata and another called Star Trek Online and then a .dll called dbghelp.dll. Theres a text file called pcl (DO NOT EDIT or the game won't work). IGNORE ALL OF THESE. The other 2 is 2 application 1 is called cryptic error and then the other is called star trek online, double click this and the launcher updater should appear and then the launcher will open. It should then take 3-5 hours to launch and then your playing the game (at last).
And just to say after I had loaded the game once the launcher was appearing on the task bar but the window wouldn't open, if you have the same problem go ctrl-alt-del and start the task manager, in the applications section right click on the launcher and press maximise and it should appear <><:-)><>
I have a similar problem. When I tried starting the game when i came back from work I got the Error 36 a file is locked that can't be open. Both AC and Firewall are exactly as they were. Nothing changed. I deactivated them and it still wouldn't work. I then tried starting it as an Admin. but all it did was to start a full download of the game. After an hour of frustration I decided to let it do the full download. It took 6 hours... just to get back to the same bloody error message. And on top of that the bloody PSW suppot site never works. Every time I try the Contact us button I get a message telling me the website does not exist...
Finally managed to get the game to work. It is bit sad that I had to download it twice however. Never installed it as an administrator before and never had to start it as an administrator either...
Monday it finally worked after deleting all star trek files in my computer and downloading agian. so i got to play 3 days, and it's not working again on shard Thrusday. Now it's unable to authenticate... the same authentication i used to post this.

Good man/woman,

I'll start by pressing some off buttons!
Now the launcher is crashing....
This is a *four letter word*

GGG
Lets see if it lasts....

Hope this is helpful its what I did
What does that mean?
Anyway this still happens with me, but i then reload the launcher by run as administrator. I get on game that way.
The next time i open the launcher the usual way and it then runs fine. Not ideal but it works for me.
