Don't you think that guns on our backs is against startrek spirit?

dapperdrakedapperdrake Member Posts: 254 Arc User
Gun in back went with season 6. What this such fashion style? Are we in those stupid heroic fantasy game made by this such pwe company?
Did you see some people with gun in Deep space nine TV drama? Did you see Kirk or spock with gun in back in Starbase in StarTrek TOS TV Drama? Did you see Picard moves with his gun in back on the bridge in the enterprise? the gun or the rifle in back is so ridiculous.
I really would like to know why PWE disrespects startrek spirit like this? They can make money without to be so much disrespectful...
Sure we can hide the gun in back. Especially if you're a kling. But when you change gun. The new one appears until you hide.
I'm reall angry against pwe because of this.

Because some people asked for it.
Some people seem to like it, and
Because for your own character and Boffs you have the option of turning the visual off.

Sorry it makes you so mad to see it, but for as i just said ... you can turn it off on your character,
quite easily, and it's not just turning it off till you switch guns, it is very possible to just turn the visuals off.

if you go to the paper doll on your character status screen there is a check box next to the weapon. if you untick it then it should remain hidden all of the time, even if you switch weapons.

as for disrespecting the star trek spirit? no. of course its not. its a holstered weapon. nothing more.

Think back to the numerous times that the characters have put their phasers away on their hip in the series. A rifle would be no different. I remember Janeway holding a rifle by a shoulder strap once, but that's not really all that different.

Because The people that help Support the Game you Play REQUESTED such a feature ADDED. Do not blame PWE For this feature, Blame your fellow players. The Masses Requested it and Cryptic Answered The Masses request. Like a Good company should. Because that's the easiest way to carry a rifle or other large weapon when you're not firing it. I can't say for sure that the show ever portrayed anyone slinging their rifle, but it does make sense. If you have it in your hands, you can't do anything that requires using your hands.

I personally hide the visuals because the styling of the weapons make it look awkward, but I like the idea of slinging your weapon so you can use your hands to do something.

Characters in the show rarely used Rifles. But yeah I think they did sling them across the back.

BTW if you want..... you do have the option of using a pistol instead of a rifle..... Pistols reside in a hip mounted holster. (or two in the case of dual pistols)

They rarely used rifles, though, because hand phasers had disintegration settings. They were usually fired well below their maximum settings. Rifles were massive overkill, at least until the Borg showed up and they needed heavier weapons.

It had nothing to do with any concept of non-violence. They were just showing how much tech had advanced (and smaller props are easier to work with, plus hand guns work better for space cowboys :D )

You are also apparently quite clueless.

They seldom used rifles of any sort in any of the ST shows, and on the rare cases they did, I can't think of a single case in which they weren't either holding them or had them sit down somewhere.

However IRL the most common and in fact about the only way to carry a rifle when you want your hands free, is slung across your back. If anyone in a ST show were to ever sling a rifle they'd do it the same way it's done in the game.

PWE has done nothing that is out side of the "spirit of Star Trek", they simply put the mostly logical way of caring a rifle other then in your hands, into the game.

I don't like to carry rifles on my either.
But I can't think of an other way to carry rifles.
That's why I have a normal phaser in my other weapons slot.
I don't use it very often in battle, but it is great as ''decoration'' :P
And you can always turn off the visuals.

    Translated from the original Klingon:
I love to go a wandering,
    Enemy troops I track,
And as I go, I love to sing,
    My Bat'leth on my back.

    Chorus:
    Val-deri,Val-dera,
    Val-deri,
    Val-dera-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha
    Val-deri,Val-dera.
    My bat'leth on my back.

I track some Feds down to a stream,
    And swiftly draw my gun
I feed them my disruptor's beams
    Come join it's happy song!

    <chorus>

    I salute all I meet,
    And they shout back "Qapla!"
I offer them some Gagh to eat
And share some heart of targ.

    <chorus>

    In battle my bat'leth burns
And I let out a fearsome roar
In this way I hope to earn
    A place in Sto'vo'Kor

    <chorus>

    Oh, may I go a-wandering
    Until the day I die!
And may my battles always bring,
    Fear to my enemies' eyes!

By the way, what is a 'bath'leth?' Is that your emergency bath time defense weapon? :)

I used to like the old Elite Force explanation of the mini transporters.

I like the holstered pistols but not so keen on the rifles and the swords look a little out of place to me. But each to their own. :)

Dig a little deeper into the game, my friend. You're gonna find a whole lotta stuff that's "against Star Trek spirit" as you say. The publishers are pretty much on a crusade to drum every last bit of Trek out of the game, in favor of an Asian, P2P, lottery model, wrapped in a superficial, Star Trek, wrapper.

Carrying phasers slung or in holsters is canon.

Phaser rifles have slings for carrying them:

    ROFL.

Because capitalism is a concept associated with Asia, and not with North America at all. Good one :).

Oh and because there is some sort of deliberate 'anti Trek' sentiment driving this.....' Riiiight...

Funny, but didn't F2P happen more or less in conjunction with PWE's purchase of Cryptic? Originally, this was a sub game, which meant.... oh yeah, P2P.....

    Funny that....

I agree its against trek feel but I don't mind that much.

I would be happy though if they fixed the size of the weapons though.

Hand phasers (post-original series) are so big they look like oversized TRIBBLE...and when holstered they are placed like a regular gun (trigger and handle pointing backwards).

In TNG+ the phaser was always holstered with trigger towards the hip, the handle forward and was unholstered with the opposite hand in a diagonal fashion.

Rifles and blades look gigantic. My federation science captain with the jemhadar rifle has the rifle covering the entire back and protruding above the head and below the butt.

When the character unholsters the rifle it is so darn big the hands of the toon cant grip the weapon nor hold the barrel portion correctly since the hands are not that long.

Weapons need to be able to re-size based on the owner's size. MMO's have been doing this since late 1990's there is NO excuse other than lazyness to have these graphical obscenities in a 2012 game.

    Allow me to clarify:

When beaming down into an unknown, or potentially, hostile situation, an away team would be issued phaser (pistols) from the lockers in the transporter room.

When an away team expected serious, trouble, or during prolonged, boarding actions, the crew would bust out the rifles.

When walking through a Star Base, or anywhere civilians might be present, the general rule is to go unarmed, or armed with hand phasers only, so as to appear unarmed, and not alarm the general populace, much like the 21st century armed forces do.

STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

That depended a LOT on plot. When in a war zone or other known hostile situation, they would be a lot better armed.

In STO they are not doing the first contact missions that were the majority of TOS, there are multiple wars on and most missions are war related in some form. While the mere existance of war could in and of itself be considered anti-trek, consider that the Feds and Klingons only avoided war by essentially divine intervention. The Organians threatened to wipe out all ships (including non-warships) on both sides unilaterally unless they came to peace terms.

Later on, there would be the Cardassian War and Dominion War.

War is something to work to avoid, but all the wishful thinking in the world and even the best diplomacy in the world cannot guarantee zero risk.

I don't think the issue is so much visibility, as it is, the notion of Starfleet officers carrying assault weaponry around, while off duty, or just hanging out on their bridge. But turning the visibility on and off, can be also be seen as disarming your character. I always turn mine off while on stations, etc. Just like I turn on my armor visuals during particular missions. Just a little bit of personal immersion for me.

But this game requires a healthy dose of belief suspension, and (arguably) liberties taken.

The bigger issue is the sheer amount of phaser shootouts and space battles. Hell, even the last Undine episode which was a diplomatic mission, just ended up another "shoot these ships until their mysteriously tiny defense force disappears, then beam down and shoot them in the face".

The mission's reliance on combat damages the spirit of Star Trek more than visible guns.

But these are things that need to be adjusted if you want an mmorpg to be successful, so I deal with it.

Honestly, I don't care what other players look like.

Look closely the the picture. The 16s aren't charged. (no magazines). Also there is no combat armor evident. Which leads me to believe these women are probably recruits or trainees on a post, somewhere.

More to the point, Israel is basically a nation under seige, and therefore a combat zone. Any full time soldiery on duty there, probably would be fully loaded out for combat. It's a different story in most other metropolitan areas. Your local armed forces recruiter for example, is, in most cases, unarmed. Your local constabulary probably keeps the peace, with holstered pistols, as opposed to assault rifles slung across their backs.

In my opinion the rifles on the back look silly. But it's just my opinion. So I turned it off.

I like the hip-holstered phasers because they look "Trek". For RP- or Foundry-RP missions I will make 4 other BOs who also wear Phasers-Pistols so it will bring me the "Trek" feeling.

If I play STFs or any other mission where I need Guns I think I am going to choose my non-RP BOFFs.

Luckily we can buy extra BOFF slots so every player can play STO as he/she wants to...

During the push to take over the Enterprise E by the Borg in First Contact you see some of the Starfleet Officers with rifles slinged over their shoulders. One reports to Worf and you clearly see it.
