there is one horribly large problem with this idea of a paid expansion.

STO is now Free to play to make people pay for an expansion would defeat the whole point of F2P.

it may have worked if they did it during S2P (subscribe to play) but its not S2P anymore so.

The bigger problem would be: why finish an entire race for 40$ per player, while you could sell <insert fancy FED ship bundle here> or sell <insert fancy new item here> per character for 100 times less effort.

I guess you've never heard of a little game called Lord of the Rings Online, which is the progenitor of the Hybrid FTP model, and also has Paid Expansion Packs? :)
STO is about my Liberated Borg Federation Captain with his Breen 1st Officer, Jem'Hadar Tactical Officer, Liberated Borg Engineering Officer, Android Ops Officer, Photonic Science Officer, Gorn Science Officer, and Reman Medical Officer jumping into their Jem'Hadar Carrier and flying off to do missions for the new Romulan Empire. But for some players allowing a T5 Connie to be used breaks the canon in the game.

So does DDO, so did Guild Wars, and so will TOR.

Yes. I have no problem buying Expansions for LotRO, WoW, etc. I'd have no problem doing so for STO.

    Yes. Double Yes for Romulans!

Subscription and game/expansion purchase are not synonymous as much as you wish otherwise to further your point. Free to play does not necessarily mean free digital download.

    Al Rivera hates Klingons
Star Trek Online: Agents of Jack Emmert
    All cloaks should be canon.

I don't think Cryptic could deliver an expansion with industry-comparable mission content for that price. So I would not buy it.

If it was a truly MMO style expansion, ROK comes to mind for EQ or say BC from WOW that added in this case a full fledged player faction (Klingons, Orions etc) and updated/gave everyone some other content (a new neutral sector with general missions for everyone) then yes I would purchase an expansion. These people who want everything for free just annoy me. Ever heard the phrase you get what you pay for?

WRONG, MANY if not ALL F2P games make you pay for things. Weather shiny things or expansions. *** made you pay for the expansion. EQ and WOW were always paid expansions. LOTR is paid for expansion. This I want it all and I want it free will eventually bite you. It's like wanting what you can get out of something short term but not caring about the long term effects. Kind of what happens with companies in general. Make a million dollars and move on to the next and leave the company in a wasteland. There's a Reason that EQ1 will hit the 20 year mark while many have come and gone since then. I even wonder if even WOW will hit that mark. Bigger isn't always better and you definitely get what you pay for.

Course it would have to be good enough to warrant the extra money. This is just speculation anyway. ;)

EDIT: Let's change the topic up a bit. What would make a pain KDF expansion worthwhile?

    1-50 content for Klingon.

    No Fed char requirement

More fleshed out mission arc the way the Fed currently is. Was disappointed there wasn't a BORG arc like the Fed's for example. Could even use the same arc since it's D'Vak that gives the missions.

More 'standard ship' options. AKA A true SCI vessel that comes with leveling ALA Fed Sci options

Add more 'patrol' style missions for Klingons the way the Fed's have it but maybe more combat oriented

Would need 2-4 NEW sector blocks with the accompanying planets.

1 sector block would have to be 'open' space that would be accessible to all chars.

Customizable UI for all (let Klingon's get rid of the nasty Red and Fed get rid of the blue if they want)

To add to it a VA (50) level free ship for both sides to prevent whining that there's nothing for X class/player There'll be some that whine but expansions work IF there's content for 90% or more people or if it adds to or adds a full faction.

Consider that this expansion is supposed to bring the KDF faction in line with the Federation faction. This is basic, core game stuff that should have existed when the game launched. Why should KDF players pay to have their faction be where it should have been since Day 1 of the game going live?

Saw this and thought I'd make a point. MANY games have used expansions to add to or introduce existing factions. The only problem is that STO originally said it would be with release. That said if all it takes is a full expansion to flesh out KDF and eventually RSE so be it. Put up or shut up with the money. MOST people know that PWE/Cryptic is a business and they have to make money in order to keep the servers online. That said they need to make it WORTH while but yes an expansion would be very doable and encouraged honestly.

Concerning the interface, Assuming its the same assets tinted to be either red or blue, I don't see why they don't just give us a set of RGB sliders in the options menu for interface colors. Then people can set whatever color they want.
A half faction is no faction at all.
