Err ... the system is not a advancement of race but rather a complete change of race.
I used Trill because it was the easiest example, its a good race but its C-Shop and people that rolled a Betazoid Science officer might start thinking they would been better with a Joined Trill.
This system is now relative common on MMO that offer similar services because there is a significant time investment on a character levels, I know in STO you can do it in a week or two so its a question of slots.
I'm all for it but make players keep the default traits of the race they originally chose. So if you have Bolian traits, then even as a Borg you have the default Bolian traits. The re-trait should only affect the traits you can actually change when you create a character.
The system now, denies this: Defaults;
Lib borg Human, Borg nanites & Efficient Captain
Human, Teamwork & Leadership
Lib Borg Klingon, Borg nanites & Efficient Captain
Klingon, Honorable & Warrior
So any species change is going to have to include a Retrain as well because different species have deffirent numbers of Racial traits.
But some people are wanting to go Bolian -> Liberated Borg Human.
Well, my attitude is that as soon as they introduced per character unlocks, both from the Winter Event and the C-Store, this kind of thing is necessary... and was probably a natural step in developing the tech needed for BO -> Captain conversion anyway.
Let's look at this.
We have Cardassian ships. People have claimed them on custom aliens that look Cardassian. These people spent big money on those ships.
If they add playable Cardassians, the folks who claimed those ships wouldn't be able to upgrade appropriately.
People are now in a position where they can't make an informed decision about species when they roll a character.
I think allowing re-species is natural.
I'll also add, PWE isn't crazy about the sale of species unlocks to begin with as they feel people should be focused on a main. This is why most C-Store species were made free. The game itself has a design philosophy of products and services on existing characters going forward, on a per character basis.
So I can also see where, in the future, instead of selling species unlocks, there may be new species only available via re-species. It fits the model better.
Any chance of more borg species? Seems kind of silly to only be fixed to a human or klingon liberated borg....
I think it probably makes more sense, as people have suggested since beta, to add unlockable Borg traits and costume parts on all species.
I've tested this internally. The only one that looks weird is Ferengi, because of the brow, and Gorn doesn't work at all. But those two already look weird with the eyepatch costume part from the KDF Academy uniform.
If they add playable Cardassians, the folks who claimed those ships wouldn't be able to upgrade appropriately.
This would be the only reason I'd be interested. I have a Denobulan captain, but if they added them as an official species and included an 'Intimidation' ability where they puff up their faces, I'd have to change him over.
Species, trait, and gender change already exist, and it's free!! RE-ROLL!!!!!!! Leveling in this game is ridiculously easy. I honestly hope that this is an empty promise, and Cryptic doesn't waste any time on this pointless feature. I'll say it here like I say it in all the forums for MMO's I belong to, you made the choice either deal with it or RE-ROLL!!!!!!!!!

That's really not viable when it comes to character bound items, some of which would cost hundreds of dollars reacquire.
As many have pointed out there's been discussion of this feature since beta. Initially cryptic were opposed to it, suggesting people make alts.
Since the PWE acquisition and recent game changes (more grinding) it appears Cryptic is is incentivising people to focus their time on fewer characters, so this 'retcon' option will probably gain more demand from the playerbase, and climb the priority ladder.
When I see it, I will believe it. I'm not holding my breath for any retrait, regender, or respecies option. Still, I would definitely like to see it put into the game.
It should be a free change once every thirty days.
Why? This scenario: (which is happening often lately)
Character A buys a Ferengi Lockbox, gets enough Lobi Crystals to purchase something off of the Lobi Store, say a Ferengi Whip or a Ferengi shuttle. However Character A is, insert race here, but not Ferengi.
However this player has Character B as an alt, whom is a Ferengi. So naturally Character B would be a great fit for a Ferengi Shuttle, or the Ferengi whip, but both of those items are bind on pickup the minute you purchase them from the Lobi store. You now have two items, you will never be able to transfer to your Character B which is the Ferengi.
if they charge you for a Species change, not only are you forking out the money / boat loads of dilithium to get the Lobi crystals in the first place but now you're also forking out money / dilithilum / saved-up-stipend to change to the Ferengi species..
Rinse and repeat for all types of species and species specific items in the future and you can see how it's very exploitative of the lockbox lobi items being BoP and how a free species change every thirty days would be a decent compromise.
i dont rly mind if its 400-800 C-store points. for once i would gladly give that to be able to retrait my fed toon. I hope the price for it will be reasonable.
Probably 280CP same as a name change.
Frankly the option should be included in either the respec, or the name change token.
That's really not viable when it comes to character bound items, some of which would cost hundreds of dollars reacquire.
which is why, they would more than likely NOT do it, They will talk about it for a while I'm sure, but look at the money they would be losing if they did. Of course, it could very well be offset by the sales themselves, but we won't know, unless they put it out. me I have no interest in it, don't need it.
I would absolutely love to be able to chance my Race so long as that means Im able to re-trait my Captain as well. Ive been around since BETA Testing. That means, a few of my Characters are in serious need of a re-trait!

exactly, say you're lucky enough to nab a Dkora and you want to run full Ferengi maybe even change gender. What are the odds of a re-roll being able to grab another dkora? It's the only ship with 24/7 access to the exchange and bank in sector space or wherever you're at. It really is the only option for someone who wants to play ferengi as ferengi rather than just a fed toon reskin (sure roll play but its is an mmorpg after all).
Add career and faction changes, and we're good to go!
Agreed. Both of which are even canon to Star Trek. Worf went from Command (Red) to Operations/Security (Gold) and back to Command (Red) when he became Strategic Operations Officer. Using Worf as example, he left Starfleet on atleast one occasion to assist the KDF in their civil war.

Don't worry about the purists. Even THEY can't aruge with the fact that Star Trek comes with a built-in 'blame it on Q' feature.

Shhhh.....lowball it first

Exactly, or just allow LTS members to use the Borg traits and look on alien characters which could work out better than coding for all species....

...and some you can't get anymore. Free Ody, Anniversary stuff.
Not to mention I don't want to redo all DoFF chains again, again. Unless it's another faction.
Probably 280CP same as a name change.

Then my first option remains viable, you made the choices, deal with it.
Another one of those "It's coming, but not on any short list" type of things. In other words, you're in for a wait.
time to once again highlight this to the dev's
every few months the wheel squeeks again until it gets some grease
BUMP! - Sqeek Sqeek..
