Free Refit Token vs 500 Emblems vs 1200 points?

Ok I wanted to try the refit escort. I've been playing on my refit cruiser but looking for something a little more fast & funner. Now before the flamming starts, I do understand that we get 1 free token for the refits & thats it. I also understand that we can get 500 emblems to try another one or buy it from the c-store. My problem is that it's geared towards me having to spend my money on points to play something in-game that I should be able to get using in-game currency. 500 emblems isn't a realistic amount for anyone to get. It would take about a month or more (roughly) of playing the dailies everyday in order to get that amount of emblems & not useing them to buy stuff for your current ship. Most people don't play enough in one day to complete all the dailies, or at least I don't. So that means if I wanted to play a new refit other than my current one, I'm going to have to fork out at least $18.75 for 15k points, assuming you don't have the 12k already that is. How is that fair? I mean, I pay my monthly sub & that should be enough.

So once the token is gone I'm screwed into trying to enjoy the game I'm paying for more buy having to dish out more money for it? Why? I know yall are in it to make money but come on! 500 emblems?? That's stupid. It's almost like you did it intentionly because you know most people are not willing to grid for a month or more to get 500 emblems so they fork our the money to get it now. That to me, seems wrong. All you devs need to take a look at games that have been around awhile such as City of Heroes. They don't make you pay for everything. They have had I think 2 exspansions that I can think of off the top of my head, that you paid for to get. One of them you didn't even have to buy if you was already a member. They have done some packs to offer in-game items for those wanting to buy them, & thats fine because even if you didn't want them, the game was still enjoyable. CO has already gone F2P & if you are not careful, STO will be going that way to. Rethink the 500 emblems. I think changing it to 100 or even 150 for a refit would be better.

Ok, let the flamming begin :)

I agree that 500 emblems is quite a lot to grind for, but at least we get one token when we hit level cap. If you want to fly more than one ship, you have to make a choice to do the grind or pony up the money. At least you can earn these ships in-game. There's already too much on the C-Store that can only be gotten through spending real world money.

To add, I fail to see the point where you NEED to have more than one ship.

Your right but the point I was trying to make is that the 500 emblems is that high because they want us to pay money instead of grinding to get 500. To me, that just seem wrong. It looks like it was designed that way. And as for the need to have more than one ship, I just wanted to try another one. I like my refit cruiser, but it gets boring sometimes. I've had a few friends tell me the refit escort was fun to play so I thought I'd give it a try. I try the different ship types throughout the lvling up process. That way I get a better feel for which one I like on the different types of officers & which works best for each. I've never had a escort at a VA rank & I figure, might as well go for the best & get a refit.

or you could spend some EC and get a non refit to see if you like it.

Oh look another 'Give to us for less instead of us having to work for it thread' Cryptic actually gives the players something to work towards instead of burning their cash and people complain...

Seriously though, there are two types of players when it comes to the retrofits: ones who want it 'now now now' and stamp their foot / hold their breath until their face turns blue, and ones who realize 'no need to get it all at once' and take their time to enjoy the game and realize if they are smart with their emblems, they'll get the retrofits, or who knows, something even better down the road.

I don't mind working for it. I just think the 500 emblems to get a different one is that high because they know most people who have a life & don't have the time to do all the dailies everyday will fork out the money if they want it bad enough. If it was 100 or even 150 emblems, I wouldn't be complaining right now. It is geared towards you spending more money to enjoy the game more. I give STO another year of this type of stuff, & it will go F2P like CO has.

Agreed. If you really want to try out an escort, purchase one of the other ships for EC. I have a Star Cruiser, and once I hit VA I'll be keeping it and using it. I don't want to fly a Galaxy refit and I'm waiting for the Excelsior to get put up for in-game means (which means I'm saving my token just in case). The refit ships are not the uber-powerful designs that people seem to think they are. They're just different.

Now, if they lower the price to around 200 badges (which I believe the Nebula is), there would be a lot less complaining...and people begging to be practically handed their shinies rather than paying or working for it might finally shut up about it. If I want to get two ships at max level, I'll be more than willing to do the grind for 100, 200, or even 500 badges if it means having something to do in the game.

If only there were ways to get the other stuff unlockable through in-game means. :(

I find 500 Emblems high. But it seems that was the value that convinced the paper(money)-pushers at Cryptic to consider equivalent. To get 500 Emblems, a player needs a certain amount of time in the game, which means a certain amount of time he needs to be subscribed.

It can be said though that, as we are getting more and more ways to earn Emblems in this game, 500 Emblems might start feeling "cheaper".

You get 3 via PvP, 3 via the Deferi Patrol, 1 eachfor the 3 new Eta Eridani Patrols, 3 for B'Tran exploration Daily and 3 forthe Fleet Action. That's 15 Emblems per day. (You can get a little more if you do the B'Tran thingy multiple times a day, and there are also STFs for which I don't know how much you get). If there are new Patrols added to Pi Canis with Season 3, it will get more. There might be an UGC Daily, too (e.g. do n amount of UGC missions or spend n amount of time in UGC missions, the specifics are not clear currently.)

I would say the price for the Nebula Retrofit sounds more realistic (200 Marks of Exploration, IIRC).

I love the fact that the Ships are available in game for a token or Emblems/Badges.

But I agree that 500 Emblems is too high.

Sure, there are more opportunities to acquire Emblems now, and that's great. But while you can get it "sooner" in overall weeks, you're still spending more time in game per day to farm them. That's time some people don't have.

Also, looking at comp prices... The Retrofits each cost 1200CP, but 500E in game. The Nebula is 1200CP too, but only 200 Badges. It seems incongruant/unfair.

I'm willing to bet noone will spend 500 emblems on a ship, ever. That's easily 50 days of effort.

the choice is, 500 emblems which requires patience or pay real money if you are impatient

you also have the choice of using a non retro fit escort if you are so eager to fly a escort, its not like it is that different to the retro really

imo, to have a big pick and choice of ships should require time investment

I'd probably do it if I wanted to fly more than one refit ship...but, I only plan on flying one per character. That's what alts are for. Still, 500 is way too high and should be closer to the 200 that the Nebula costs.

I like that it costs a great deal of time to achieve getting an iconic ship to the franchise (beyond your free one.)

This game needs achievement loot and ships are the BEST achievement loot to create. You can get 500 emblems, which does take a good amount of time....or you can buy it with RL money. The choice is yours really.

I still have not used my free refit token personally, but I like the idea you get ONE for free, and the others take a great deal of time.

There are still other T5 ships you can get for next to nothing with EC. Refits are 1st rate ships and I like that a person can't simply get all of them in a month....it leaves something to achieve in the game.

    Slightly tangential topic...

Why can't we get the Excelsior Refit for in-game currency? I see the Nebula is available for Emblems (and tokens?) but the Excelsior Refit is C-store only. That seems unfair.

    Thanks,
    Duncan

Still? They really need to fix that.
