So at any given hour of the day, there's somewhere between 1-8 klingons, and 4-25 feds available for PvP. Across a 24 hour span that averages out to something like 150 people total. There's usually a dozen instances open for the PvE maps so that's probably another daily average of a little under ten thousand. Most people don't play every single day admittedly, but the daily low is what you want to base quotas on to stay on the safe side, because that's what people are going to perceive. These numbers aren't official, I know, but it's what's observable. While it used to be true that there were huindreds of people doing PvP all at the same time back in the heyday, the argument against rennovating the PvP system was "PvE has more customers, and is where the game's future will be made."
This didn't take into account the fact that a strong large fleet takes about 15 PvE types to support one PvP team member infrastructurally. It also doesn't take into account that a fleet which is going to be gearing and practicing a team of five needs a backup team and possibly a third string for replacements, meaning at least fifteen PvPers, and therefore 225 PvE types, all of these people active daily, to maintain one strong fleet with a cohesive community and enough redundancy and overlap to stay together.
STO itself has another problem on top of all this, retention for this game is amongst the worst in the industry. One in three people sticks around longer than a month. One in five of those longer than three months. So for every 15 recruits, you get one that sticks around. That means you need to recruit around 2,500 people to your fleet in a three month period in order to sustain community development towards a sustainable PvP team.
What's happened instead is that there are a handfull of PvP-only fleets that have all traded the same fity people around and around and around in order to make it look like there's more of an active community than really exists. It's functional to the extent that there is still PvP happening during most hours of the day, but do understand that it's the same fifty people all the time, and they have become so insanely good at it that there's not a snowball's chance on the solar surface of a new player even pretending to put up a fight against them for their first twenty or thirty matches.
STO is poorly socially engineered. It's set up like a Corporate Office, and I think Cryptic would do well to hire a sociologist before releasing future products. Their marketting team clearly hasn't got the right ideas.
Atari, if you're listening, consider the potential here. Eve has aged to the point of silliness, and there's no other space-PvP games worth twenty bucks on the market right now. You could inject a lot of life into STO by remarketting the PvP structure. You'll just have to give it one first, because the 2-map-queue while they are amazing maps and I have had weeks upon weeks upon weeks of active playtime fun in them... are not enough to draw a PvP crowd.
I have it on good authority that political landscapes such as are available in the defunct PvP game "Shadowbane" suck people in so much they're still handling their in-game politics two and a half years after the game shuts down, in communities numbering around ten thousand people. Something similar is true of the SWG(pre-CU) millions, who will all happily describe a rich political landscape game that was ripped apart in front of their eyes and they still despise Sony for it half a decade later.
so....I find this thread, I join the channel. I ask does anyone have any constructive advice and I get a smart reply. Real friendly and helpful....so I want to say THANK YOU......You would think that being in an organized pvp channel that you could ask a question like that but.....I guess that's not the case wow....what a great reception. So I guess that new people aren't really welcome here. That's good to know, also it's good to know that asking questions about advice won't be answered or taken seriously. So since that's the case and my dollar is just as good as the next person's......Cryptic you need to put out MORE information about what it takes to succeed in PVP please.

The channel has lots of people in it... some times of day you may run into some that are not so helpful. Create a new thread in the PvP section... ask your questions in it. Most likely you will get some good feedback. This way people from any time of day will see your request for info.
I hope some of the non constructive responses where at least witty and funny. lol

There are a few ****s, but you will find most ppl are ok....
It takes a bit of patience to succeed in PvP too. Sometimes people aren't all that great but most times they are. Don't give up. Don't be rude back (since that only begs for more of the same in return). It never hurts to ask but it doesn't always help instantly either.

I don't know if it was you, but I replied to someone asking for general pvp advice to "be humble"
No it's not a put-down. You do know that most pilots in opvp are... well... pvp'ing in matches and can't really type if they're busy fighting
In PvE:
If you afk and autofire you will beat most NPCs in this game, ground or space
You're the center of attention
Everyone will praise you and compliment on what a great service you've done for the federation
In PvP:
You're NOT the center of attention
You WILL blow up a lot, because there's a very steep gap in terms of being effective in PvE and PvP
It's the only form of gameplay in STO that involves teams
"Be humble" means you swallow your pride if you get blown up, and think about how the guy killed you. What buffs did you see when you were targeting him? How did you setup your officers?
There are no tooltips or tutorials cryptic can put out regarding PvP, because they themselves don't pvp to any sense of respectability. Just look at PvE. That is how they view their customers. Not capable of being challenged more than autofire/afk.

The OrganizedPvP channel is becoming the whinning channel. OMG, while reading the text for nearly an hour I kept expecting Oprah Whinfrey to show up and give you all a big hug. I know you have complaints and some valid, but get with it. Make your point and go do something else. Either that or at least start the OrganizedPvPWhinersClub channel/
I understand you are trying to be productive, but if you look at this from an outsiders point of view, the new players would be thinking my god this game is about to implode, creating a singularity at the center of the earth, destroying all life on our planet and then slowly consuming the solar system. If I was a new player interested in pvp, I would think there is no point in ever playing STO. May as well just leave now. If you want to see changes, you have to build the community for PvP. And that will never happen if they read these forums and read the content of the OPvP channel and think they may as well go back to ... (insert game).
I am not saying to not voice your complaints. But the constant whining for over an hour?!?!?!?! This is a game! I know you want it better, you know you want it better. You may not believe the devs want it better, but if you tell them you don't care, they will have no incentive to help the community and they will give up. There is probably a dev who is thinking, wow... I put in all this hard work, trying to make a change for these guys, and those guys really don't believe anything I am doing is valuable. So why should he bother.
Try constructive criticism and a bit less sarcasm.
Where people exchange helpful information to improve their playing experience , including advice on builds , play styles, arranging private games, ways to improve the game and of course importantly bugs which affect play style.
This is generally acknowledged as one of the most helpful and productive chat channels on any MMO people have played.
Feel free to ask if you don't actually understand what's going on
We discuss a great many things, some at times in more detail than others. Many of us are quite familiar with the game and one another so we do tend to use short hand or sarcasm. If there is ever a point of serious confusion we will be more than happy to clarify.
Don't get me wrong, most of us aren't perfect. As with any public chat there are things and people beyond our control. The whining (is this the new word for constructive criticism that you disagree with?) is just a side effect of so much frustration at numerous long term broken mechanics. Try to keep a thicker skin and things will mostly be quite alright.
In fact, differing view points often help to create a better experience so please do contribute. I don't think the channel as a whole will spout off in a wall of text and then profess that it doesn't care what you think. I even suspect that the channel won't hide behind alleged military service as a shield just because there might be differing opinions.
By the way, thank you for all that you might have done for whatever country you may represent. I don't think that makes your opinion any more important than anyone else in this case but thank you all the same:).

It doesn't sound like you're the level headed guy, you are whinning yourself. Welcome to Earth. If you don't like to hear complaints than don't open a forum or just play another game. There are always going to be people out there with ideas and you have some people that have complaints. If the complaints outnumber the ideas, then you probably need to make some changes in their favor, or you risk lossing players, period.

I found the channel's general atmosphere to be juvenile and tiresome, talking about mechanics being 'TRIBBLE' and the usual chest-beating machismo from various self-appointed nutjobs.
