Sound Loop Crashing in Deferi

STO was playing well until I visited the Deferi Sector. It seems like only in that area STO causes my system to lock up completely - screen will go solid grey or black - the game's sound will repeat in a loop. I have to do a forced shutdown and cold boot at that point.

What are the common causes of this type of crash?
