On the Excelsior and the C-Store

Having been reading about the addition of the Excelsior and Nebula to the game via the C-Store, I feel compelled to add my thoughts.

I have not yet purchased Star Trek Online. I am on the fence about it. I have played the demo, which I think is great and I think the game shows a lot of potential, but I am also cognizant of the fact that the game has gotten a lot, and I do mean a lot, of bad press.

Part of my hesitation, also, is that I am not a fan of the ship designs from The Next Generation era shows, except for the Romulan Warbird. I have been hesitant to lay down the money for this game without playable Romulans. It seems like a lot of people aren't certain the game will even survive that long. (As an aside, if the Romulans do make it to playable status, please give them at least the option of using the TOS era, Roman inspired uniforms and make-up, and not the absolutely awful TNG costumes/make-up.)

Now, here is my point. The Excelsior could sell me on this game. The Enterprise-B is my favorite Federation ship out of all Star Trek (don't ask me why, I don't know). But I am not okay with spending real money on a virtual item that, once the game is done (whether sooner or later), is gone forever. I might, repeat might, spend a few dollars for the ship, but no more. I'm certainly not spending $25 on it.

I know I'm not the only one on the fence about this game. Adding new ships into the game as free content could do a lot to generate some much needed positive publicity which, if it could be capitalized on, would be worth far more in the long run than whatever sales could be made to the current, from all reports depleted, subscription base.

That's just my two cents. It will probably go unheeded, but I would like to see this game succeed.

Well as it is right now they are looking in to ways to earn it in the game. ( it is a game of cat and mouse between the devs, and the accountants. ) Granted it will be hard to earn, but at least it would be semi free.
( you have to pay a sub )

as for the game dieing. STO has a lot of good things going for it. the single server, the fact that we don't need that big of a population to survive compared to other MMOs, and the fact that we have a really dedicated dev team. The people saying it is going to die is normal for an MMO. the first year is shaky no matter what MMO it is. there are those who fear the end is near, and then there are some who just want the game to fail. ( I really don't know why. ) I really don't see this game failing even with some of the other games coming out. granted the population might get low, but one thing that need to be reminded is the fact that EVE online ( the other single server space game ) survived for two and a half years with only 30k worth of subscribers. that game turned out great. I feel safe to say that this game will survive.

as for being on the fence. Atari marketing just dropped the price to sale more boxes. it is now 19 bucks. ( keep an eye out on steam becasue they have sales on it's games all the time, and it might drop lower ) but this is a better time then ever to try it out. ( 19 bucks is not that much )
