(I consider this to be more of a "Klingon Gameplay" post than a "PvP" post.)
I was getting seriously bored of ground PvP just because we ALWAYS, ALWAYS massacred the Feds. It was a very rare Fed team that would get more than 10 kills. 40-3 was not uncommon. There are numerous reasons for this but that's another story.
Today we decided to get together a team and just go all batl'leth. We also carried stun pistols to help with runners but rarely needed it.
We still won every match by a landslide but it was a whole lot more fun and interesting.
My advice:
- Bat'leth
- Stun pistol
- That shield that procs an AE knockback when you get hit
- Regular energy dampening armor
The shield proc helps keep your target down while you beat on him. There is a +melee strength armor but it sucks -- you get a minuscule boost to damage for a high cost in resists. You could use the melee resist armor (PolyAlloy Weave or whatever it's called) but the Feds will be shooting you still so best just keep the Energy Dampening armor.
If you're tactical, I suggest using the Squad Leader kit for this, since it has no abilities that require a gun and if someone drops a big engineering parade inside a dome shield, you can throw a smoke grenade in there and laugh at them.
Incidentally, when facing dome shields, I advise running into it and doing the bat'leth middle attack. It'll knock anyone inside the shield to the edge, where you can beat on them.
Also, read this guide:
http://forums.startrekonline.com/showthread.php?t=97085
Print it out and use the bat'leth combos.
We got accused to exploiting an "overpowered" game element, but I assure that you my team would use guns to totally decimate any bat'leth team. Bat'leths are actually quite underpowered. But they're more fun and Feds are so bad at ground combat that you can beat them anyway. If they keep losing we're going to have to switch to hand-to-hand.

Also funny was tanking 5 feds when i was the only one in the game at the time for about 4 minutes with my medic heals as none of them seems to have a clue how to expose.
stop the spread of AIDS among the english language
It's actually far less effective than our normal game, which is nothing but split beam rifles and expose attacks (including science AE holds).
Now at least the melee fights takes a while to resolve because we're mostly hitting people for like 20-40 damage. Even a melee exploit attack typically only hits for 300 or so. The hard part is sticking to a target until they die. If they're squirrelly, backpedal a lot, use their own roots, snares and holds and apply doses of rifle melee to keep us off, it can be really hard to kill them with bat'leths.
Luckily nobody ever does that. Feds are pure "derp" in ground PvP.
I'm sure it can be; if the hold ever breaks. Quite often it doesn't.
Still, I can't argue with the fact that most Feds don't seem to know what they are doing in ground PvP. I mean, I'm not the best player you'll ever see; but I know to regroup if I get cut off from the others by respawns. Half the Feds I find myself playing with don't even appear to know to stick together.
Hey, speaking of holds, maybe you and your team of sword masters could challenge the Devs to a friendly little match? Might do the game a world of good lol
In fact, we might need them to join the test server or there won't be anyone to test the PvP stuff against. :-p
(After we completely crush them we would be happy to tell them how it happened, and put them under heat lamps and ask them pointed questions about whose idea it was to put a 6 second stun built into the Expose mechanic.)
This...........
The sad thing is, Feds could do well at ground PvP if they built for it. We get so many Skill Points slapping a few in a ground skill wouldn't hurt. Everyone builds for space combat though..not ground.
I read through your guide..switched to a split beam rifles and a Bat'leh and haven't looked back. (on both my Klingon and my Fed). I wish more players Federation side would read your guide...it's pretty much a blueprint on how to do well in Ground PvP.
I'd love to have a team of Bat'leh wielding Science Officers take on a band of Klingons....that might be challenging..
You really should call this the "Swordsman Build" it's the player version of the NPC Klingon Swordsmen....
I use it usualy when a fed takes one out then I have no problem taking out mine. However on the average match because it like never lets go.. I tend to avoid it.
I have also used it when the sides were very lopsided to like glue the other 5 man team in place while our two man team tries to win but these are the only times I use it otherwise I stick to a gun.
I think the moves are kinda cool though and if I am in the middle of 5 people and get that thing swinging its like a giant roto rooter.
Hehe I have they disable your weapons as well but if you bounce around a lot they cant hold you :P
(pretty sure I saw one pull out a gun on me... to get it over with.. )
ground pvp is why I still play this game to be honest
You dont know what entertaining pvp is until you start wailing on a guy, hit him up with some bleeds and slows, only to have him stun and make a break for it. Unfortunately for him he's fully exposed thanks to the weapon and i on occasion switch to the sniper rifle, drop to my knees and fire one off only to have him disintegrate.
Glorious.
I have on occasion put victims out of their suffering with a quick blast from my rifle. From time to time we indulge opponents with swift painless deaths if they kneel before the Warriors of Kahless and beg for mercy.
Oh, and go into close range if they pull a gun on you, and hit 'em wit ha rifle butt. Or stun them is you have another person with you. It take about aa second to switch weapons, which is more than enough time to jump out of the way.
I've complained in the past that melee in this game is pretty useless because it's so easy to counter:
* Shield knockback proc
* Rifle melee / palm strike
* Roots / snares / holds
* Running around like a loon
Snare mines are the worst but a Tactical shooting a split beam with Suppression Fire III to snare everyone is a pain too, and of course Gravimetric Shift goes without saying. Even deployables can be a pain if they're fully skilled up -- you can't ignore a fully trained up Phaser Turret III for very long.
Melee is the easiest attack to counter.
It has certainly made the game more fun and interesting for us. And we still always win.
Disclaimer:
In the event we run into a team that's actually starting to beat us, we reserve the right to switch back to rifles. (And sometimes Snowreap gets annoyed and shoots people who put holds on him too many times.)
ordinarily, I don't use anything except the bat'leth and my heals. and I won't typically bother with Gravimetric Shift (or a stun pistol) unless the plan is to shoot people. I don't mind runners -- if they want to drag things out by running away that's fine with me. chasing them down is half the fun, like fox hunting.

Im sorry spec for ground pvp as a sci is just a waste when some the feds don't know how to kill the person exposed...I could do it but not for 6 sec after we use the expose. Ya I run 2 expose weapons and switch when the other is down.
You KIinks made my brother log after a 45 min match .. where his feds team were actually killing and they refused to respawn.
So it works both ways.
when that happens, it will frequently be the case that we'll run into some lone fed player (who also recently died) while we're trying to get back to the group. sometimes they'll run away, but even if they do you can usually catch them and show them some 1v1 love. sometimes I can kill them before they reach their friends (or before more of their recently-respawning friends can reach them). sometimes it becomes a 1v2 fight, then a 1v3 fight. these fights are harder to win, and depending the opponents sometimes I won't even try, opting instead to break off and return to my group (assuming I don't die first, of course).
but I don't see how killing feds 1v1 helps them understand that Klingons aren't overpowered in ground combat. if anything, I'd think that it would make them more likely to think so.

Every TRUE warrior understands that strength comes from three things: yourself, the warrior on your left and the warrior on your right.
If the Federation cannot learn this simple lesson then they will never be true warriors.
Thats actually a pretty sweet idea.....expose is a weird mechanic. But I guess thats whats part of not making it overpowered. We all do have to keep in mind the game is pretty young still...and ground PvP is still an unexplored area for many players. I actually got my tukus handed to me last night by a bunch of new fed players. I've been playing Lieutenant Commander level..and I see some pretty good Fed players coming up the ranks. I've also been playing both sides recently..as I enjoy gameplay on both sides of the fence.
Even if you never PvP, expose + exploit is a fundamental part of ground PvE. How can anyone make it to admiral without realizing what it means or how to do it?
This is true in group versus group, but against that solo fed player, it's a greater testimate to your skill if you dual them and have you klingon buddies deal with reinforcements. Try being a lone fed against a group of 5 klingons, no matter how good you are, unless you get a lucky expose/exploit, you'll never take down even 1 of them. Trust me, its not fun to be the 1 against 5 without a chance. Thats why quitting mid-match is such a viable option when teams become so imbalanced, it's a retaliation for farming human players without taking their gaming experience into account along with your own.
Many feds level up on PVE content only with the logic being at the end they will PVP as that is the end game. I have seen this conversation a lot on message boards and had a very hard time finding a guild on the fed side (in fact I never found one) that was interested in PVP'ing from level 6+. If I wanted to PVP at all levels I had to make a klingon.
I dont agree with it seeing as the pvp is probably the most fun and the pve kinda bores me, but that is simply the way it is. I tell people who are not killing those who are exposed how to find them. Some listen and some do not.
There are some decent pvp'er on the fed side , but the numbers of players on the fed side is very large. LIkewise there are some crappy pvp'ers on the klink side and they have been there since launch however its all in the eye of the beholder.
Is either side much different? No not really. PVE'ers migrate to the fed side obviously because of the content. However there are those that never made a klingon character that have tried to pvp their way up. I give them props for that as I abandoned my fed character in the first week of launch I think.
the reality is though that because matches are much harder to get many feds leave the pvp till "endgame" and right now many are starting due to the purple gear. Some are just doing it for the purple gear and dont really care about the pvp. Others actualy decide they like pvp and learn the ropes, but yeah many are starting at the top levels if not at admiral just before that.
I do see a lot up and coming people though, but the reality is for many feds PVP doesn't start till end game. (admiral level)

never had to expose exploit in pve just shoot it dead with npcs if they expose exploit okie dokie with me.. i just stand there and watch the show..
Sometimes I feel like a Hirogen when I am doing PvP, so adapting my playstyle to my prey is fun every now and again
I would love to end up in a match with you one day, Slamz. I am curious to see you or your team in action.
