it seems i cant play this game untill i buy and install a new video card and i've researched the two that you recommend in the book that comes with the game and the nvidia geforce 8800 i heard has overheating issues. so i was wondering if there are any other video cards that would be just as good that i could get
There's a whole range of cards that are "just as good". You need to tell us your motherboard make and model, your power supply wattage and most importantly your budget.

Post your dxdiag logs so we know what spec your comp is. Theres no point getting a high end card if the rest of your system is goign to bottleneck it. And for most mid-high end cards, like 8800GT upwards, you might need to buy a new PSU too.
It also tells us that you need a better CPU and more RAM, so the best bet is to buy a new PC (upgrading would be throwing good money away).
I'm not sure which motherboard the HP Pavillions use - I can tell you that if you did try and put a decent graphics card in it, you'll end up replacing the PSU and space will be an issue.
Edit: I just found a site that sold your PC in October 2005 and only charged $449 then, so it's old and cheap. Never going to play ST:O on that no matter how much you upgrade it. I actually think my Ipod touch is more powerful.
yup. You need to build yourself a new computer. Dont worry though as you can recycle some of your old parts, and build a good mid range system for around 300£$.

I don't actually think he can recycle any parts - everything in it is at least 3 generations old.
