NGE = New Gaming Experience. The worst half brained idea SWG ever came up with that lead to the not too soon demise of it.

If SOE made this game, we'd be in FAR worse shape, and people would be FAR more ****ed off.

In Nov 2005 SOE revamped Star Wars Galaxies and called it the New Game Experience (NGE). This move resulted a large scale game cancellations and is considered by most players and industry people to be the single largest bumble of a Major IP MMO to date. No other company has repeated this mistake.

It was such a horrible mistake the the President of SOE went out publically both in the SWG forums and on various internet MMO sites and made a public apoligy and stated that it was a hgh mistake. Over the years, SOE has had to close servers because populations had gotten so low that there was no point in continuing to have them.

Rumor mill is that when SWtOR releases, Lucas plans to pull the plug on SWG....SOE claims this is not the case. Guess we'll see sometime next year if it happens.

The great catastrophe unleashed by SOE upon Star Wars Galaxies players. Fortunately, I was gone after the first revamp, hilariously termed as the "combat upgrade" or colloquially known as the "CU."

Just for kicks, I checked out the so called "new game enchancements," and, for the first time, I actually thought that SWG in its post-CU iteration may not have been as atrocious as it initially seemed.

In short, only play SOE games if you're willing to tolerate numerous overhauls of the entire game engine which always seem to be exponentially worse than the original product.

I disagree...SOE generally releases great games...the first year is nice, then from that point on some brain dead executive figures he can improve something and ends up ruining the game. Or worse...the get a game and ruin it....MxO is a perfect example of that.

Everyone in STO will be admirals, everyone in STO will startoff with an OP Galaxy Class starship, and everyone in STO will have lightsabers...

MxO was flopping long before SoE bought it. If it wasn't for SoE, MxO would've closed long before it did, they kept it running for years.

The Cryptic CEO is from SOE. So in fact STO was made exactly how SOE would have made it. That is why Atari/Infogrames installed him when they purchased Cryptic.

SOE also has one of the largest MMO bases and probably the longest running profitable MMO. They can't be doing everything wrong.

Disclosure: Yes, I'm biased. I'm posting this on a break during an Everquest raid.

If SOE had made the game, very very few people would have been able to log in for a week after release and there would be no grace period. All you'd have is the ground part of the game, and most of the story quests would be broken, the very few functional ones giving you very modest rewards. Many of the professions (for example, Pikeman, a profession inspired by Star Trek TOS episode "Amok Time") would be broken as well.

With no real content, the SOE devs would tell everyone that if they commit certain acts in game, they could unlock their Liberated Borg Character Slot (LBCS). Nobody would figure it out how to unlock their LBCS even after hundreds of hours spent doing broken quests. Thus, the devs would make a random, rare drop with a one time use that would tell you which of the game's 32 professions they'd have to master to get closer to that slot. Only a select few powergamers would unlock it in the beginning, most would torment their servers by exploiting its near invincible nature in PvP.

They'd implement a "space expansion" over a year after release day, charging 30 dollars for it. By then, everyone would given up SOE's Star Trek Galaxies for Blizzard's new MMO hit "World of Starcraft".

Wow... well here's hoping that STO only improves. I like the game the way it is, but would like better server stability.

Yeah one of the things that had really ticked players off, was that about a month or so earlier, SOE released the Trials of Obi Wan expansion. Of course people bought it, then they added this NGE to the test server. The NGE wasn't even introduced until it was up on the test servers, so the community had no knowledge of it before hand.

It was never discussed with us or anything. The theory is that SOE was getting their butts handed to them by Blizzard. In SOE's defense, they were in terms of demographics. The majority of players were adults from their early 20's to late 40's, demographically speaking. While that is now a large share of the market, what they didn't have were many female players or teens. So to try and draw in more of this group, they dumbed the game down to be more "WoWish".

SWG first released with 66 professions, if I remember correctly. That was solid professions, but you had so much customization that you could make untold numbers of hybrid professions. Early on is SWG balance was a hugh issue because the dev's couldn't keep up with number of ways that players could come up with power builds that were out of proportion with other builds. To alot of players this made the game play fun, interesting, and challenging...to others, they hated it.

At any rate, the NGE plus SWTOR could very well be the final nail in the coffin, if Lucas doesn't pull the plug when SWTOR releases,as rumor suggests.

People are still playing and still enjoying it. Some are wishing for years for SWG to die but i guess they are just disappointed that some people enjoy what they hate. Shocking isn't it?

If SOE made this game you'd have to kill 10000000 tribbles to level up and sell their tiny pelts to afford your tier 2 ship.

I think the big problem with Galaxies, as an outsider, is that it STARTED OFF with some sloppy sandbox complexity and then took most of that away all at once.

NGE is where the game should have started and the sandbox elements should have been tacked on over time instead of ignored.

I think if STO maintains very healthy sub-numbers, we may see a "Reverse NGE" eventually as the sandbox features are added on.

Launching a game as a sandbox is dumb. But so is removing sandbox features once players are used to them.

IMHO, there is no MMO that isn't better served by launching as a theme park but sandbox features should always grow, never shrink, in number.

Technically SOE dont create games so who knows what this game would be like if they had created it.

Also in regards to the NGE it wasnt SOE who did it. They didn't program the patch and stuff it was all Lucas Arts. Its their IP and they decide what goes with it. NGE was their idea and as such SOE had to implement it.

Also they have Everquest 1 + 2 which are apparantly very good games.

If they made it? They dont make games they put them on lifesupport and then divert the funds from it to EQ2. >.>

(this was tongue-in-cheek humour for those lacking it).

can everyone PLEASE get their facts straight the NGE was forced upon SOE by Lucas arts and a man called Julio Torres, less than a month before the NGE was announced SOE were working on the long awaited scout upgrade.

NGE was not all Sony's fault.

Lucas Arts have a lot of blame for that in fact it was their idea. They owned the Star Wars License and where unhappy the way SWG had been developed. They wanted it more action based to set it apart from the other mmorpgs. They wanted a more first person shooter and something easier to undertand and play.

They hoped this would open up the market to younger star wars fans. The problem is Lucas Arts had not made a game for 7-8 years at that point and knew nothing about MMORPGS. Sony could have done more to stop it but when if the license holder can basically force you to shut the game down I guess you have little choice.

To be honest NGE was not a bad system the problem was SWG already had a better system The big mistake was stripping out 50% of the content along with NGE coming in.

I agree with this, everyone blames SOE, but it was LucasArts that forced those changes They wanted it to appeal to a mass market, so all the kiddies could play their 'iconic' characters. I loved SWG for the first 18 months, my best MMO experience ever, that was ruined one day back in November 2005.

Anyone that judges SoE based only on SWG is a fool. EQ and EQ2 are excellent games with thriving fanbases. EQ2's launch was very smooth with the exception of the game being so demanding on computers people had to turn things down.

NGE - SOE did the same thing in their kids MMO Free Realms just a few weeks ago. Many unhappy players. Really dumbed down the combat which was already pretty simple anyway.

Don't worry about it. The OP is an idiot and thinks he's funny.

If SOE had done this, Rangers / Escorts would be promised a huge power burst, but instead get nerfed. Science ships would begin whining they can't tank, and it's unfair that cruisers can. Cruisers would start whining that they should be the only ones allowed to tank, and escorts have way to much dps.

Please do not mention that mans name in my beloved star trekboard. Because of him, I cringe at the word "iconic" which know I have very faith in Bioware because theyuaed thename iconic as well.

Actually, SOE did the same thing with EQ2. Completely redesigned the classes, and nerfed most things. I take it as how SOE now operates. Release a game too early, then completely redesign it within 1-2 years. I actually like SWG better now, but refuse to subscribe to any SOE games.
