I have an idea for a new class of support hanger pets.
A hanger pet with a very weak attack, but it extends the range of all your weapons, by maybe like 20% or 50% but only on what they are targeting and once they get in range to attack that target or something like that.
So, basically a spotter of sorts.
Definitely interested in feedback with this. Would this be something worthwhile to explore more, useless, overpowered and so on.
To the best of my knowledge no, hanger pet exists that does this, so I do apologize, if this is something that is already in the game.
I can see that being rather frustrating for other players. That ability on a high end build could mean they might not even get a shot in.
Yeah it sounds like it could easily become a "must have" and a pain to balance if it extended only the range of the mothership, but if extended the range of all friendlies at reasonable radius it might be something that has chance of working.
It might still be too powerful but at least if it was team rather then a personal buff it would something that's not needed in the fight for everyone.
There already are weapons and consoles that can attack from beyond the 10 kilometer default range. PIBB (the 2 or 3 piece bonus beam from the Pahvan set) has a whopping FIFTEEN kilometer maximum range! Fiery Charge has a 12 kilometer range (IIRC). There are a few others, but I 1. don't have them and 2. don't remember what they are.
The idea of hangar pets that grant your flagship's weapons additional range is an interesting idea, but I think it'd be abusable in PvP.

But those are just a few items and are obtainable by any ship, they aren't game breaking. These pets on the other hand would make having a ship without a hangar bay feel extremely scammed
In PvE players could wipe out certain stfs before you're even in range of anything (which at times is practically doable as it)
In PvP unless you have a battlecloak you could literally be wiped up before even firing a shot (PvP is bad enough, don't need something incredibly broken like this yeeted into the pot)
Can't have a honest conversation because of a white knight with power
The devs once said something along the lines of the reason they don't do long range weapons is many missions are built around 10km range weapons. Being able to attack at long range meant players would trigger 2nd and 3rd battlegroups at the same time causing major problems as they got overwhelmed fighting multiple groups at the same time that are design to be engaged one at a time.
We have a handful of 12km weapons and apparently those are bad enough. Although personally never had any issue with my 12km Tricobalt boat.
So if one was to target the closest enemy ship 15 km away with the Pahvan Interstellar Bombardment Beam they'd have to travel another 5 km before being able to use their ship's main weapons ?
What advantage does this bestow.. aside from being in red alert 5 km early with nothing to fire at ?

It brings the ships to you as you gain aggro, causes pet to fly out that way and engage. All minor benefits but I guess still benefits.
On Jem Hadar carriers and Dreadnought Cruisers, definitely because it's true to character for them
"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavours, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

Thanks everyone for your feedback, so it kind of sounds like the general consensus is the game is just built around 10 km weapon range and would also make player versus player more frustrating potentially.

Or maybe do it for any fighter when they reach a low heath mark?
Klingon maybe

I think pilots of all the factions would resort to a kamikaze attack as a final option.
Federation would just beam out if they are KIA when the fighter is hit, kamikaze seems more a Klingon and Jem Hadar thing.

They chose to be kamikaze pilots! I'm not lowering my shields to beam them out! XD
I use the headcanon that my pets are drones so no people aboard those

Yes ... that makes so much more sense.
