I am not talking about the slow initial install speeds I am talking about patching a new area in game I have never been to before. 50kb/s is a bloody joke in 2022 when you have 500MB download clocked on multiple different speed test sites.
Yes, if On-Demand Patching is on, that's the likely culprit - that thing is seriously broken and it really ought to be removed at this point...or at least set to Off by default.

Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"

On demand patching probably needs to be kept in, as I and many others (the US isn't so great with Internet outside of major cities) wouldn't be able to effectively play on major launches, with basically needing to patch overnight for any release over a few hundred megabytes.
Not sure what the cost-benefit for Cryptic would be on having it on by default, as when it works, it should reduce the load on their patch servers, as well as getting people with OK connections into playing the game faster.

At least it should remain turned off once set.
I had it turned off and apparently it switched to on by itself.
For those who may be experiencing a similar problem. Today I purchased a flash drive big enough to hold STO. My install of just the game came to nearly 45GB. Transferred the files over to my new laptop. Double checked to ensure the file count and size was correct. Didn't help me get back ingame but apparently it has sped up my patching time considerably. I say apparently because I am unsure if someone at Cryptic looked at the patch servers today or not. I'll assume they did because tomorrow has a pretty good size patch based on the information in the Patch Notes. If this is true and correct, thank you Cryptic.

Ouch. 45GB... How much of that is the "prepatch" folder ("C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Trek Online\Star Trek Online\Live\prepatch" if Steam)?
@tom61sto None of it. Never saw the sense of using a launcher to open another launcher lol. Only recently started using PWI's...oops. We're supposed to call them GearBox now...launcher.

That's really odd and extremely high then. Did you check where you have it installed installed instead of where Steam puts it? Even the bare Launcher should prepatch. I last updated my Steam Deck during the Risa event and it's only 23.5GB, and that's with On Demand Patching off(as Steam Deck basically has to have it off). Main PC w/On Demand (though I turned it off for the prepatch) is currently at 33GB, but 6GB is prepatch.
