Server Connection Timeouts causing R&D Project Choice/Lost Progress Glitch(?)

On Sunday, 10 April, 2022, roughly around 14:30 PDT (21:30 UTC), I was in the Earth Space Dock (ground) social zone, standing by the Exchange area, I was just about to start the Level 15 Science School R&D Project "Item - Aegis Deflector Array", after having purchased 2x (rare quality) Catalyst: +50 Skill Rating, from the exchange, to go into the project to give it a boost. A few short moments later after starting the project, I began to see the familiar red text at the top of my screen indicating that my machine was trying to contact servers. A few seconds after that, my connection timed out. This sort of thing had been happening the past few days before that as well, resulting in lost progress on other things (albeit then only limited to minor details, like costume edits at the tailor). After logging back in, I was in the middle of the main concourse of ESD, at the top of the stairs leading down to the shipyard area. I checked the R&D panel, and while my materials and components were not spent (they were safely back in my inventory), my two catalysts, and the energy credits spent on them, had been spent, and instead of the Item - Aegis Deflector Array slotted, it was instead the "Bonus Research XP (Science)" project slotted in (and with me not having enough dilithium to quick-finish it, and tying up the only Duty Officer - Gumarre - capable of making Aegis items.
Bear in mind, This may have been human error on my part; I won't deny that. Perhaps, not paying attention, I somehow chose the wrong project. This is very possible. But I'm fairly certain I chose the Aegis Deflector project.

Since then, I've waited out the other Science project until it was done, and have since (for certain this time) started the Aegis Deflector instead. However, if it was indeed a glitch caused by a server connection time out, while I don't pretend to know how or why it would happen, it seems concerning were it to happen again, especially if it's been happening to others.

In light of this and on the side, if I might make a feature suggestion for down the road: perhaps a "cancel project" button; one would lose the progress and any items, currencies, materials, or components put into it, and it wouldn't "finish" the project, but it would free up the duty officers; handy if those might be required for something else, and/or if the player made an erroneous choice, or simply changed their mind.
