Since the Mirror Janeway BOFF sets a precedent...

novapolaris#2925 novapolaris Member Posts: 805 Arc User
It was one thing when we got Elisa Flores with her three superior traits. Now we've recently gotten another BOFF with three superior traits, with the reward of holographic Mirror Janeway from the current event. Not only that, she has an extremely powerful ability, to boot. This is setting a precedent, with Cryptic adding more special BOFFs with three superior traits that technically put them at a level *above* the very rare rarity. Right now, I know of only two way to get one of these effectively "ultra-rare" BOFFs, one being to play a vanilla Starfleet character and get Elisa Flores from either the tutorial or a reclaim officer, or to run the current event and get holographic Mirror Janeway.

Cryptic's already given us elite ship and captain upgrade tokens. Given this continuing precedent with the new BOFF, why not make elite BOFF upgrade tokens for players to upgrade existing BOFFs to ultra-rare with, giving them the same setup of three superior traits? (Not adding special abilities like Mirror Janeway has. Just the three superior traits and anything else Cryptic deems fit, like a device slot like captains get.) I know I've been interested in the possibility since I noticed Flores' trait setup, and they added captain upgrade tokens. I don't think I'm the only one who'd be interested in BOFF upgrade tokens. (Especially since right now, the only ways to "upgrade" a BOFF is to straight up purchase a new BOFF on the exchange, which can get prohibitively expensive, or get lucky with duty officer assignment or level up rewards, which can be very unreliable, and remake the old BOFF using a new "character" and costume and name swaps.)

    IIRC
Janeway's traits duplicate each other to an extent, so not perfect

In my opinion, 3 superior ground traits is no better than 0 superior ground traits.

The KDF one is better in that regard.

You mention an upgrade option too, dil sink opportunity? God knows I wouldn't buy them with money.

There are technically Romulan's at Fleet Embassy, that give 4 Superior Traits if I recall correctly; but they aren't cheap either.

If memory serves correctly they are the very rare Romulan Engineers & Scientists; though perhaps the Tactical officer's are similar but you'll miss out on SRO with them all. Why most choose the Rare Romulan Tacticals, as they have2 Superior Traits including SRO in Space.

Still the Very Rare Romulus are extremely GREAT to get especially now, because you need them for the decloaking bonus of 15%, so getting 1-3 ideal even if the TAC's focus mostly on the Rare Romulan that have SRO.

NOTE: the Stealth Fighter SET is not longer limited by Ship Class, that changed 2+ weeks ago or so.

I like this idea. I also think it should be taken further than you're suggesting, OP.

Instead of only upgrading Boffs, buying and using all sorts of traits (especially those limited to specific species now, like Romulans, Cardassians and Vanguard Jem'Hadar) should be enabled.

People have been asking for a way to make all species as interesting as the best ones for quite some time now. And it's not difficult to see why.
It's quite disappointing that, in order to get the best traits in space, you basically still can't have Andorian, Vulcan, Tellarite or Bolian officers on your Starfleet ship / as a Starfleet captain.

Everything that isn't already upgradeable should be - boffs, doffs, whatever...and not via tokens, but actually USING them - if the player gets experience from completing missions, 'neutralizing' enemies or whatever, boffs should get some of that, and same with doffs on active duty, whereas ones sent on missions just get experience from completing those missions.

That would nicely solve the doff cartel issue selling certain build-important doffs for utterly insane prices.

The prices some Doffs go for are only insane because they're almost impossible to be won from boxes.

With every new box that's added to the Infinity box, the chance of getting a Doff that was originally from, say, the Xindi lock box is getting smaller.

    1. The Infinity box consists of items of ever more other lock boxes.
    2. Those other lock boxes each had multiple items in them, of which the Doff pack was only one.
    3. That Doff pack in most cases contained many different Doffs.

So it's a chance (3) of a chance (2) of a chance (1) that you win a certain Doff - and number 1 is making all the other chances even smaller with each new release.

And this is the case for many items. If you think about it, things are actually pretty cheap on the Exchange, considering how unlikely it is for a player to get any one item in the first place, before they're even able (if willing) to sell it.

Which of course is, almost entirely, Cryptic's fault.
I say 'almost' entirely, because to a very small extent it's also the fault of those who encourage others to only buy from the Exchange and never supply any items themselves by opening boxes - leaving that instead to a handful of players who are then portrayed as the evil ones demanding unreasonable prices while in fact they are supplying everything for the entire playerbase, usually without making any real EC profit unless they win a ship...

I understand that, although I was specifically referring to BOFFs, not DOFFs.

I know, I was responding to someone who talked about Doffs.

    Boffs should be upgradable.

I love this idea, TheoryFive. I'm strangely new to this venerable game. Being fresh, one particularly savior some immersion in Trek nostalgia. As FleetCaptain5 said, I would love to be able to use my favorite, iconic Trek species without worrying that I'm sabotaging my ability to overcome content in the game. Plus, one gets a little sentimental to the Boffs that have been with your main character for a while. I don't want to throw my Bolian, who has been with me from the beginning, under the bus the moment a Caitian comes along.

As an added touch, I had really hoped there would be doff assignment chains in the 'Personal' category that related to your Boffs - your Spock and McCoy. Even simple text chains that are RNG generated and attached to one Boff. Completing the chain could have some token impact. Doesn't have to be game breaking, just something to customize or tweak a favorite boff, or make that Vulcan worthy of being a science officer.

I like your idea of personalised Doff assignments. I haven't seen that suggestion being made before. It would be a nice way to include some character building for Boffs - and maybe even Doffs?

Show me one with 3 Superior Traits for Space ???

I'd say the best we have is 2, both from Romulans (limited to those with Superior Subterfuge & SRO) while Bashir has Leadership & Space Warfare Specialist; neither are Superior. So both Superior traits are ground... I also agree that I don't think we've ever seen one with 3 Superior Space Traits, and I don't think the other guy meant to imply otherwise.

    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
I just wished a few more Species, had a single Space Trait, even if not Superior!

Vulcan for one could use something to boost shields & auxiliary abilities. I also wished Human's added a slight boost to Leadership that gave +1 Weapons & Engine power, given weapon offline resist isn't that good. It also mostly only helps when fighting others with Phasers too, and most Romulans use Plasma and Klingons Disruptors!

Be nice to see a few updates or revisions for sure, perhaps add Space Trait to some Trill; given that they can be used by both MAJOR factions. It's also not be too bad if other Fleet Holdings allowed some of the Species (above) with an upgraded Superior Space Trait, even if the others were Ground from the list above. That could work if they EVER expanded several Fleet Holdings out from Tier III to IV, yet will they ever consider? :*
    ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Still I'm going to expanding a few Very Rare Romulans 2-3 for each Captain, for when they make a bit more use of the 3 piece Stealth Fighter SET--that now isn't bound to one ship type.

Still given it's 2410, and we've joined an Alliance the given change seems to make sense; though it still offers an slight advantage to Romulan or Klingon Ships who don't require the 3 piece set. Yet it does provide options for those who want to explore it, which is nice. o:)
