Whatever you did to make the game work again with my poor old sub spec graphics card, thank you!

The game stopped working for me after an update at the start of February, one of the patches while playing through the mission in Sto-vo-kor.
Busy starship combats in particular would cause the game to crash every 20 seconds to a minute, causing me to continually drop and rejoin tfos, and even fail to get the rewards from patrols.
Each patch and update, I would load it up and try again
Somehow, as of the start of July, it's working again.
The graphics card is now running at 80-90 degrees celsius, but the game, as yet, isn't crashing.
So, Thank You to whoever made whatever change allowed me to play again after a concerning hiatus.
I would quite like to know what did go wrong if anyone knows?
