Joanne Linville, a prolific character actress best known for playing a Romulan commander in an episode of the original "Star Trek," died Monday, CAA confirmed to TheWrap.
The character actress worked alongside Barbra Streisand in the 1976 "A Star is Born"
Born in Bakersfield and raised in Venice, CA, Linville established herself an actress in the mid-'50s and '60s, gaining guest roles on "Studio One," "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," and "Kraft Theatre."
While Linville never became a series regular, she continued to work steadily with guest appearances on "Charlie's Angels," "Dynasty," and "L.A. Law."
Linville is best remembered for her role as the first female actor to play a Romulan in the "Star Trek" franchise in 1968.
The character actress expanded into film, with supporting roles in "A Star Is Born" (1976), "Scorpio" (1973), and "The Seduction" (1982).
Shifting into a teaching role by the 1980s, Linville opened an acting conservancy with her teacher Stella Adler. She also authored the book "Seven Steps to an Acting Craft."
CAA's press release announcing her death stated that Linville lived a full life, "one whose spirit, passion for art and life was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure of knowing her."
The studio execs wouldn't allow women to be in leadership positions (getting rid of Number One, the original First Officer, for example), but Gene Roddenberry and company were able get around this by having an alien (the Romulan Commander) be the first official female captain of a starship.
Joanne Linville performed wonderfully in 'The Enterprise Incident'. She would have been a great recurring character/villain, but Star Trek switched the focus to the Klingons (for cost's sake, pointy ear prosthetics didn't come cheap back then).
I was saddened to read of this via social media this evening. Linville gave some great performances over her career.
I have taken my own Romulan Commander to the in-game memorial at New Romulus Command. Parked her there a bit to hold her torch,
"Long live the memory of Liviana Charvanek. Her loyalty to the Romulan people tested numerous times, she would prove herself worthy. Following the fall of Shinzon, she joined the great Spock on Remus, vowing to atone for the Empire's wrongs against both the Remans and the Watraii. She would be proud of the unity established on New Romulus. Jolan tru!"
I am saddened as well. She is my favorite to play a Romulan character in Star Trek. I feel she played a Romulan exceptionally well as comes first in my mind when I think of a Romulan. I also enjoyed her performance in other roles as well.
I like the idea of giving respects and homage at New Romulus command. I will do the same with my Romulan character.
A normie goes "Oh, what's this?"
An otaku goes "UwU, what's this?"
A furry goes "OwO, what's this?"
A werewolf goes "Awoo, what's this?"
"It's nothing personal, I just don't feel like I've gotten to know a person until I've sniffed their crotch." "We said 'no' to Mr. Curiosity. We're not home. Curiosity is not welcome, it is not to be invited in. Curiosity...is bad. It gets you in trouble, it gets you killed, and more importantly...it makes you poor!"
Passion and Serenity are one.
I gain power by understanding both.
In the chaos of their battle, I bring order.
I am a shadow, darkness born from light.
The Force is united within me.
I was wondering that myself when I read the article.
As far as I've read of their biographies, there's no mention if they are related. They were both born in California (Jan. 15, 1928 in Bakersfield for Joanne Linville and Sept. 29, 1939 in Ojai). They weren't married to each other.
QDEP
I will see her in the bar at the Captain's Table one day in the not too distant future, as will we all, albeit some sooner than others. And we'll find out if she prefers Mojito or Cuba Libre!

Ms. Linville was my first Star Trek crush; a very elegant, beautiful Romulan, indeed.
Godspeed.

They could be cousins, but it doesn't say.
