pay to win to get end game gear faster. its an extreme grind that can take atleast weeks even over a few months to even complete episodes on lowest difficulity when you are at max level
You can buy or very cheaply craft Mark II VR gear then level it up with Phoenix tokens that just cost a bit of dil. You can easily get VR, UR or Epic Mark XIV gear by doing that.
Not that you need it, Mark XII is good enough for any normal difficulty content.

Umm...hate to tell you this...but you may suck at games if this is the case. I can do ADVANCED missions (okay the space portion of it) using common mark XII gear and the free ships you get. If you need more than a day to get even VR mark XII gear...you really are doing something wrong...much less COMMON ones. Oh and using all very easy to get boff powers. And no expensive doffs...not even A2B ones. And no expensive traits. I got somebody advanced ready for 5 mil EC...which if you don't have by the time you reach max level, what were you doing?!? And than I got them elite ready for 50 mil EC and 500k dil...which for the HARDEST this game has to offer is not that much resources and can be collected in about 2 months...for the HARDEST content in the game. Completely F2P too if you wanna.
I'm not one of those "I can do Elite in a T1 Connie" folks but it's definitely true that XII common is enough for normal.
For my KDF recruit and endeavors I'll use random reputation box mark XII drops for the different energy types (phaser, antiproton, etc.) in place of the normal disruptor gear (which is crafted VR mark II upgraded) and it works well enough to finish the red endeavor 500K damage in a TFO while doing my share of the objectives.
troll and run is ironic and leveling up like most people do without paying for things. gear in mmos are usually gained through dungeons/tfo and quests and doesnt have a huge difficulity spike in end game
I'm pretty sure that you can easily hit 65 inside of 12 hours nowadays. Before the new patrols came in it was about 28 hours without XP boost. Nowadays, with a new toon, I do those patrols on Elite and go up 3 or 4 levels just doing one....I may just have to time it again.

Yes the game is old but it tries its little socks off. Aside from being basically the only star trek game out there that'll work on a modern system it's also a single player game with lots of customisation options. Aside from the snails pace of story content sometimes it is basically everything I could want.
If it were possible to retroactively add dialogue cutscenes with a voiced protag instead of the window boxes that would be divine but I will take what is given to me.
No forced multiplayer required to complete the story is a huge plus, instanced missions so I can do things my way at my own pace. It's perfect really. But that's just me talking from a subjective standpoint as someone who doesn't like mmos, I can get on with swtor but other mmos just put me off with well what essentially makes an mmo I guess.

For me it takes about 2 months to get a new character FULLY up to speed. This is because of spec points and traits, and fleet gear. Of course you can do pretty well with just level 2 reputation in 3 days. I think you also need 45 spec points though - maybe a month? And of course this costs the princely sum of zero dollars.
I would add that in LOTRO it would take the better part of a YEAR going at my same slow pace, and even with trying to pay to win there it would take hundreds if not thousands of dollars to be end-game competitive. So, yeah, STO is extremely fair.
