So like many people I have my standard characters that I play with, but we now just had the Klingon and now Delta recruit characters/events.
Speaking only for myself, I would rather NOT have to make a new character every time a Recruit event happens, unless its part of a new story/faction like the Dominion.
I would rather be able to take my older characters and have them do it, I would find that personally more fun and less of a pain in the A using a different character that I didn't even want in the first place.
Granted I am not forced to do the recruit event, but that means I miss out of any number of possible items that would enhance my play.
I know I am not the only person that Dislikes having to make the new character, a number of us did converse about it in chat the other day and the mentioning and supporting idea of converting an older character into a recruit was much more appealing.
I like it. I have way more characters than I can play as is, so I would welcome the ability to convert an existing character into a recruit.
The stumbling block that I can see would be that this would only really work for Delta because it is the only recruit that can be any species from any faction (except Dom). KDF recuit could also work, but things like the Temporal recuit would not because it is Fed only, but not only that, it is limited to a select few Fed species (Human, Vulcan, Andorian I think). So you would only be able to convert a character that is the correct faction and correct species.
Also, didn't we just have a thread about this topic after the Delta rerun announcement?
I don't really see what the problem is with making a few extra characters, all of the recruitments put together can be done with only four at minimum and at most take six because of slight faction differences in Delta. Reruns really don't count since once you have a particular recruit the reruns don't give you anything extra that the older version character cannot go back and do, they are mainly for players who missed the earlier iterations.
Extremely unlikely to happen as your character is hard-coded in once created.
"You don't want to patrol!? You don't want to escort!? You don't want to defend the Federation's Starbases!? Then why are you flying my Starships!? If you were a Klingon you'd be killed on the spot, but lucky for you.....you WERE in Starfleet. Let's see how New Zealand Penal Colony suits you." Adm A. Necheyev.

Ah but what about players that didnt have any recruits before hand, but have lets say 6 characters already? its a bit of a pain to make another character just for that.
There might be another thread about this, I would be surprised if their wasnt.
If someone does not already have the recruits then the event is the way to get them. And once you have it (or them in the case of Delta) you are covered from then on as far as those particular recruitments go.
It is not like anyone has to dump their main character (if they have one) and switch to nothing but the recruits in an effort to get everything done before the event ends, I know people with AoY recruits who still don't have everything done and that event only ran once, way back in 2016 for instance. A few people I have talked to just ran them through a few missions (enough to get the device and be an official recruit) and let them sit for years.
I have a Gamma recruit that is in a similar limbo, I cannot get into the head of the Jem'Hadar so I ignore all the ground stuff and just did the things you can do with the ship (including crafting since the event ran not too long after I came back to STO and some of the starter crafting levels were higher than anything I had on a real character) and I have not touched the thing since.
I kinda find that this game is rather generous with account-wide unlockables for a f2p game. Compared to some games, including others by the same parent studio company. The Recruits are built on that very concept - complete goals, unlock stuff for Recruit and bonuses for other characters.
In that respect, making new characters for Recruit rewards doubles as an opportunity to use account-wide unlocks I haven't used in awhile or barely touched at all. I can also try out new races, combinations of build, and all sorts of stuff.
But I am also very much an altoholic by many definitions. Character creation is actually one of my favorite parts of RPGs, especially one with this much tailor customization option. Plus I wasn't around for many of these recruits, so I rolled a KDF Recruit earlier this year, then 3 Deltas, and hit was my character limit at 14. So naturally I bought a pack of Character slots so I'd have enough for the Temporal one later. Then caved and rolled a 4th Delta as a placeholder, knowing i won't get to her for a long time, purely for fleet donation purposes later (so I'd have the same amount of recruits in our KDF fleet as our Starfleet one.)
Call me "El," she/her only. I love my wife and I don't care who knows it!

Me too, I can spend hours in a game's character creation, character creation is usually the best part of any video game, I'm currently waiting on BG3 and TES6, I don't know about you guys but I'm drawn to fictional races with pointy ears.

I have more than twenty on my main acct and will still make a new one for a recruit event if I don't already have a recruit. For instance, I didn't have a KDF or Fed Delta recruit on my alt acct, so I made a Fed one since I had just made a KDF recruit for that event. When it rolls around again I'll likely create another KDF Delta Recruit.
Now a LTS and loving it.
Just because you spend money on this game, it does not entitle you to be a jerk if things don't go your way.
I have come to the conclusion that I have a memory like Etch-A-Sketch. I shake my head and forget everything.
I saw X recruit and i thought, yeah, TRIBBLE? never happen, they won't even let bikinis on ESD, no, wait.. Mulder? scully??? noooo CanI finally get Emma Frost that turns to diamond and is impervious to attack? cooooolllll anyway that's what I thought when i say the title.. carry on.
Many of you make valid points, but what I see is that we are given a character to make that we may not actually want to use at all other than for the rewards. after that I am willing to bet probably 80% of them or so just get deleted after everything has been milked.
I think that it would be more practical, to simply change an existing character into a delta, at least as an option.
I support this idea also. I got a Delta/Rom that’s collecting dust right now and my recent KDF recruit is joining him. I’m currently on my Gamma recruit only because I got the Gamma Pack and unlocking the ships for my mains. Not really interested in the recruit account unlocked stuff because most of it is worthless, except the dil. Would really be cool if you could switch between recruits as well.

NEVER delete a Recruit...like EVER! Just as they did with Delta, they may add new rewards. I still have all my originals. Yes they don't do much now, but Dil farming Randoms, but I'm glad I never got rid of any.

Right but look at it this way, I have one character from each faction, 2 roms one fed and one KDF, I only have one Jem because I felt it was pointless to have another character that really only has tac ships join a faction that also really only had tac ships.
when the next recruit event comes, I may have to buy extra character slots or delete characters that I currently have.
at least this way, if there was an ability to change a character into X recruit, either option would not be a problem.

If I was to delete a recruit it would be the Gamma since I have absolutely no use for the thing as a character and the crafting and ship-only stuff is done. The thing is, there is little reason to do that since it is so cheap and easy to get character slots in STO compared to most other games so I usually don't bother deleting even one as useless as that one.
As far as delta recruits go, it looks as though there's only one account award that's exclusive to Federation captains, so if someone is looking for 'optimal' captain slot usage, a delta recruit fed captain would be the one to skip. Everything else is covered by KDF and Romulan.
That's good to know since the Delta re-run is starting on console in a couple of weeks and I have no recruits there.
They have taken at least one of the unique ones from the Romulan recruit since Installation 18 is no longer part of the transponder except as part of the Wastelands arc so that particular one is no longer an advantage, it is just another requirement heaped on compared to the other two factions.
It is not fun going through daily grinds across all the toons on two accounts, and eats up significant time of my day. I practically don't play the game, since there's profit in mindless solo grind. I have only ever finished 2 special toons, the original 2 Delta recruits. Only unlocked some basics on one Temporal, and I guess finished one Jem'Hadar Vanguard. Frustrating having the KDF recruit be the best ambush decloaker due to that character-bound unique KDF Doff. Rare I actually play some rTFOs after the boredom of the grind, and solo missions can go to hell I'm sick of playing them a billion times over, so I won't.

Talk about sick of grinding, I just took a new Delta though three or four back to back runs of Time and Tide collecting set items and that one has a long cutscene that cannot be escaped out of so it is doubly annoying.
That gets worse if you have multiple accounts as some missions refuse to let you group up.
Most of the rewards being just marks and dil never really seem all that rewarding, especially for the stupid timesinky nature of ranking up in admiralty or doffing. But those things aren't really close to proper gameplay so I suppose the rewards are in keeping with the effort required.

This, might as well add this to the FAQ thread Mods.

I just want to make sure that I understand that correctly.
Yes, for completing faction-specific story arcs, that's what @corinthalas is talking about above.
It's just minor dil or marks boxes though, nothing special like a bat'leth or other weapon.
Talk about sick of grinding, I just took a new Delta though three or four back to back runs of Time and Tide collecting set items and that one has a long cutscene that cannot be escaped out of so it is doubly annoying.
