Crash to Desktop a few seconds/minutes after logging in

I'm getting a Crash to Desktop a few seconds after logging in to an existing character. The time varies from instant (i.e. while loading into the map after loading my character) to a few minutes - on one occasion I got most of the way through an Argala patrol before it happened.
